General Motors has recalled most of its newer full-size SUVs and pickup trucks for a warning light that fails to illuminate when brake fluid is low, the NHTSA disclosed on Monday. The recall population is nearly 450,000 vehicles.
The electronic control module has a glitch that could fail to show the "check brake fluid" light in the instrument cluster in the event of a leak or some other compromise to the brake fluid. Without the warning light, a loss of brake fluid can be detected by more brake pedal travel and less stopping power. A red brake light may appear in the cluster if there is a total loss of brake fluid.
The software issue can be remedied by an over-the-air update at dealer service centers. For owners who have opted in to over-the-air updates, the fix can be downloaded from the comfort of their homes.
The following GM vehicles are affected:
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (59,175 models)
- 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 (35,989 models)
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe (134,854 models)
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Suburban (65,411 models)
- 2023-2024 GMC Yukon (57,083 models) and Yukon XL (44,945 models)
- 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade (33,005 models) and Escalade ESV (19,209 models)
GM knows of no crashes or injuries related to the issue.
Expect notification of the update by mail by Oct. 28. The update is free and covered under warranty whether you update the software at home or at a Chevy dealer.
