Overview
The storied 8-series is back, and BMW has packed it with as much muscle as it can in a beguiling, windswept package. Choosing between the coupe and the soft-top convertible will be the hardest choice.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
Its 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine pulls strong, and its revived steering feel is a revelation; all-wheel drive is standard—at least for now. At launch, only M850i models of the BMW 8-series will be available but lower-powered models with different drivetrains are possible later. At our test track, the 2019 BMW M850i coupe laid down a blistering 3.3-second zero-to-60-mph time. Adaptive dampers, active anti-roll bars, rear-wheel steering, and a locking rear differential heighten the driving experience and this big two-door will easily hustle down a twisty road.
Interior and Technology
The interior offers all the infotainment gadgetry and luxury features expected in a high-priced grand touring coupe and can even be outfitted with a fancy white-and-brown color scheme. Although it does offer a pair of vestigial rear seats, they're not pleasant places for adults to spend time; the low roofline also impedes headroom in the front seat and outward visibility isn't great, but that's the price for fashion. Both a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen are standard and are reconfigurable to display a variety of information. Other niceties include ambient interior lighting, a wireless smartphone charging pad, power-adjustable steering column and seats, onboard Wi-Fi, nappa leather upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A suite of driver-assistance features, including a semi-autonomous driving mode, is optional.
