A sport sedan bargain, the 2024 Acura TLX is fun to drive quickly and pleasant for the daily commute.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Acura TLX? What does it compare to?
A premium midsize sedan, the Acura TLX is sized like an Audi A6 or BMW 5-Series but it costs more like the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.
Is the 2024 Acura TLX a good car?
We’re not fans of its touchpad-based infotainment interface, but the 2024 Acura TLX appeals for its value, ride and handling, and plentiful features. It garners a TCC Rating of 7.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Acura TLX?
For 2024, Acura drops the base model and makes the former Technology Package equipment standard. The car also gets tweaked styling, larger interior screens, a quieter cabin, and improved safety features.
The exterior changes are minor. Every model now gets a frameless version of the brand’s five-sided grille and it features a new diamond mesh pattern. That goes with an angular and sleek design that doesn’t give away the TLX’s front-drive-based platform. The rear end echoes the look of the nose, and the whole car has a sleek, sporty look.
Inside, the TLX now features 12.3-inch screens for both the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen. The center stack and center console are replete with buttons that create an airplane-cockpit look.
The base TLX is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes 272 hp. It’s quick and fairly efficient with EPA ratings of 25 mpg combined. It comes with front- or all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The TLX Type S draws upon a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that ups the output to 355 hp and can launch from 0-60 mph in about five seconds. It comes only with all-wheel drive.
While its front-drive roots mean the TLX will never be confused with a BMW M3 in the handling department, it is fun to drive and agile. It’s balanced through corners and rides well in any form. The Type S increases the fun, but doesn’t have what it takes to be a track car.
A large greenhouse gives the TLX a roomy cabin, highlighted by comfortable and supportive front seats. The rear seat also offers good room for adults, though the trunk is on the small side.
Safety is a TLX strength, with good crash-test scores and lots of standard safety equipment made even better with new sensors and additional features this year.
How much does the 2024 Acura TLX cost?
With the cheaper base model dropped, the 2024 Acura TLX’s base price rises from $40,745 to $46,175. The simplified lineup now consists of TLX 2.0T, TLX SH-AWD, and TLX Type S models. The Type S tops the list at $58,195.
Where is the 2024 Acura TLX made?
In Marysville, Ohio.
2024 Acura TLX Styling
The 2024 Acura TLX has a sporty presence.
Is the Acura TLX a good-looking car?
Yes. The TLX sits low and wide to create a planted, sporty profile accented by angular lines. We add two points for the exterior and another point for an attractive, fighter-jet interior. That brings the total to 8 on our scale.
Up front, the TLX’s grille flows into thin-slit headlights and drops down to take up real estate in the lower front fascia. It’s flanked by air intakes that suggest performance, which is most realized in the Type S model. The angular lines of the nose are only partially echoed on the sides by a rising character line that breaks up what is mostly an otherwise clean profile. The large greenhouse is set back like on a rear-wheel-drive car. The TLX has a pert, upraised tail, thin taillights that stretch from the corners into the trunk lid, and small air vents.
Quad exhaust pipes give away the Type S, and it also shares a body kit with the A-Spec model.
Inside, Acura gives the TLX an airplane-style cockpit look with a lot of hard buttons and knobs, the most noticeable of which is a large drive mode dial in the middle of the center stack. Aided this year by larger 12.3-inch screens, it comes off as futuristic. A variety of trim materials, including leather and aluminum, add visual interest, especially if the red leather is chosen.
2024 Acura TLX Performance
Agile moves and a good ride make the Acura TLX a pleasure to drive.
The 2024 Acura TLX occupies a middle ground between commuter and canyon carver. It’s easy to live with every day, but has the moves to put a smile on your face on a twisty road. The handling and ready power earn it a 7 here.
Is the Acura TLX 4WD?
Front-wheel drive is standard in the base model, while the A-Spec and Type S get all-wheel drive.
How fast is the Acura TLX?
It’s not slow in its base form and the Type S is downright quick. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that spins up 272 hp. The power flows through a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission to launch the car from 0-60 mph in about six seconds. It has all the power you need to jump out in front of traffic or pass with confidence on the highway, though its exhaust note may be too loud for some tastes.
The Type S model employs a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that increases output to 355 hp and cuts the 0-60 mph time by a second or so. It’s strong across the rev range.
Drivers should appreciate the quick, direct steering of every TLX. It has a decent amount of heft, and the Type S is heavier for more stability in sweeping corners. A double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension do a fine job of controlling body motions. A-Spec and Type S models have adaptive dampers that strike a great balance between ride and improved handling. Every version is fun to drive, and the Type S will excel on a twisty road, but it’s not built for track durability.
2024 Acura TLX Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Acura TLX offers plenty of interior space and comfortable front seats.
The TLX has good room for four adults and five will fit as well. Add a high quality interior and the TLX earns an 8 here.
Base versions have decent front bolstering and power controls for the leather seats. Additional bolstering in the A-Spec and Type S versions makes occupants more snug during fast cornering. In either case, the TLX has lots of headroom and legroom up front.
In the back, riders have decent space and good padding. Headroom is better than the roofline would indicate, and legroom is decent, but at 34.9 inches some midsize cars have more legroom.
The trunk is just average with 13.5 cubic feet.
Acura outfits the cabin with rich materials, including newly standard leather, and it’s all well assembled.
2024 Acura TLX Safety
The 2024 Acura TLX comes loaded with safety features and has the crash scores to back them up.
How safe is the Acura TLX?
While complete 2024 crash-test scores aren’t available yet, the TLX has posted good crash test scores and its list of standard safety features only improves this year. Its plentiful standard features, advanced emergency braking, and five stars from the NHTSA earn it an 8 here.
While the 2024 ratings are available from the NHTSA, IIHS hasn’t completed the full battery of tests on it, so it doesn't earn a Top Safety Pick rating.
Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, traffic-sign recognition, and a new rear seat belt reminder. An increased radar field for the blind-spot monitors gives a larger field of view and enables lane-change alerts, and the front sensors also have a wider field of view.
Outward vision in the TLX is largely unobscured, though the rear pillars cut off some view to the rear.
2024 Acura TLX Features
The 2024 Acura TLX offers three models with value prices.
The TLX offers just three models and very few options. Buyers will mostly have to pick only colors inside and out. It still earns an 8 here for its healthy list of standard features, overall value, and an excellent warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles with two years of included maintenance.
A simplified lineup not consists of only the TLX 2.0T, SH-AWD, and Type S models.
The TLX 2.0T costs $46,175 as it adds the equipment from the former Technology package. Standard features include leather upholstery, 12-way heated and power-adjustable front sport seats, a 12.3.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, a wifi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, a 13-speaker ELS audio system, ambient interior lighting, a sunroof, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
We’re not fans of the infotainment system, which requires manual dexterity on the go to operate a touchpad on the center console that controls a cursor on the center screen.
Which Acura TLX should I buy?
Buyers have to move up to the SH-AWD model to get all-wheel drive. It costs about $51,000 and comes with Milano leather and synthetic suede upholstery, cooled front seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, a 17-speaker ELS audio system, LED fog lights, a decklid lip spoiler, and a sport appearance package.
How much is a fully loaded Acura TLX?
The TLX Type S pushes the price to $58,195. It adds a rear spoiler, 20-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a body kit, and 16-way power heated and cooled front sport seats.
2024 Acura TLX Fuel Economy
Acura TLX fuel economy is good for its power.
Is the Acura TLX good on gas?
The TLX gets a turbo-4 that offers decent fuel economy or a turbo V-6 that drinks more gas. The base engine is the volume version, and while 2024 ratings aren’t available they should be unchanged from 2023, which earned EPA ratings of 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined with front-wheel drive. That earns a 3 here, though all-wheel-drive’s 21/29/24 mpg rating would qualify as a 2.
Opt for the A-Spec version with its body kit and the front-wheel version gets 22/30/25 mpg.
The TLX Type S carries ratings of 19/25/21 mpg with the standard tires or 19/24/21 mpg with the summer performance tires.
All TLX models use premium fuel.
