The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a sporty plug-in hybrid in a luxury class that reaches toward the mainstream, but it lacks the brand’s exotic character.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a new small crossover SUV that comes only as a plug-in hybrid and acts as the gateway to the brand. Sporty and efficient, it’s aimed at the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and X2, and Mercedes GLA-Class.
Is the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale a good SUV?
Alfa Romeo reaches downmarket with the Tonale, but it still delivers good looks, agile handling, and plenty of power, all topped off with about 30 miles of plug-in hybrid range. The cabin is spacious for the Tonale’s small footprint, and it comes loaded with safety features. It earns a TCC Rating of 7.0 out of 10, which should improve when EPA ratings and crash-test scores become available. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale?
Everything, sort of. The related Dodge Hornet beat the Tonale to market, but both vehicles are new. Both are based on a lengthened version of the platform used for the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The Tonale comes only with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, while the Hornet also offers a 2.0-liter turbo-4.
The Tonale becomes Alfa Romeo’s smallest and least expensive vehicle, though it’s priced close to the Giulia sport sedan. At 178.3 inches long, it’s 6.3 inches shorter than the Stelvio and its wheelbase is 7.1 shorter at 103.8 inches.
With less room to let Alfa Romeo’s flowing lines play out over the exterior surfaces, the Tonale isn’t as graceful as the Stelvio. However, it has the right Alfa DNA, including the triangular grille up front, triple-lens headlights and taillights, and curvy rather than angular lines along the sides and corners. It comes off as distinct in its class, but stubby compared to other Alfas.
Inside, the Tonale also has the familiar steering wheel-mounted start button and sport seats. The rounded look continues with several circular elements and a dash that cascades down in two curved levels.
Every Tonale model—Sprint, Ti, and Veloce—features a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It consists of a 1.3-liter turbo-4 that drives the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission and a motor on the rear axle that combine to make 285 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque, which is good for a quoted 0-60 mph run of 5.6 seconds. The motor is powered by a 15.5-kwh L-shaped battery located beneath the center tunnel and rear seat. EPA ratings aren’t in yet, but Alfa Romeo says the Tonale should have more than 30 miles of range.
While the front and rear axles are driven separately, the power is well integrated and strong enough for daily needs. There’s less power in electric mode, but the Tonale can go up to 85 mph in electrons alone.
Like other Alfas, the Tonale is sporty. It has quick steering, strong brakes, and agile moves. Available adjustable dampers firm up for better control without making the ride too harsh. The short wheelbase means it can be jittery on broken pavement.
The cabin has good space for the Tonale’s small footprint. The seats accommodate 6-footers behind 6-footers, and the cargo area has up to 50.9 cubic feet of space. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.3-inch center touchscreen provide the technology, while soft-touch materials on higher-set surfaces provide the sheen of luxury.
The Tonale also gets a full spate of safety tech, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitors with steering assist, and front and rear parking sensors.
How much does the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale cost?
The Tonale starts at $44,590 and comes standard with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, wireless smartphone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The top Veloce model starts at $49,090 and options can bring the price to the mid-$50,000s.
Where is the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale made?
In Italy.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Styling
Alfa Romeo’s curvy lines don’t play as well on the short Tonale as on its other vehicles.
Is the Alfa Romeo Tonale a good-looking car?
The Tonale sports typical Alfa Romeo design cues, but without as much room to play out as on other Alfas, they aren’t as graceful. We still award it a point for its exotic overall look, giving it a 6 out of 10 here.
The Tonale wears the signature Alfa Romeo look up front with the “Scudetto” triangular grille flanked up top by thin headlights made up of three LEDs and down low by a pair of outer air intakes. The grille and air intakes combine to create what Alfa calls the “Trilobo.” It’s a distinct look from the competition, but it looks much the same as other Alfas.
The look along the sides also employs the rounded lines that are typical of Alfa Romeo. A curved shoulder line runs from front to rear where it flows into an inset greenhouse with a fast rear roofline. The side windows cutouts take an ovoid shape, and the curvy lines are accented by available 20-inch wheels with a circular spoke pattern.
Inside, the Tonale has circular air vents that bookend the dash, an instrument panel hood with a pair of rounded ends, and various other circular controls. The low-profile 10.3-inch center touchscreen perches atop the lower portion of a dash that cascades downward in two curved layers. Mostly black, it’s a dark cabin, broken up only by an available aluminum trim piece that bisects the dash and some other silver trim.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Performance
The Tonale has sporty dynamics but doesn’t offer the performance the brand is known for.
Spritely power and frisky handling earn the Tonale a 7 for performance.
Is the Alfa Romeo Tonale 4WD?
An engine powers the front wheels and a motor drives the rears to give every Tonale all-wheel drive.
How fast is the Alfa Romeo Tonale?
It’s no slouch. Alfa Romeo offers only one powertrain in the United States. The plug-in hybrid system teams a 1.3-liter turbo-4 that makes 180 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque and an electric motor that produces 121 hp and 184 lb-ft. They combine for 285 hp and 347 lb-ft. The engine uses a 48-volt starter/generator that provides a small shot of torque from a start and smooths over the stop/start feature. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic.
How the power arrives depends on the selected driving mode. The Tonale has the traditional Alfa Romeo DNA drive mode selector, but its modes take on different meanings. The D stands for Dual power and Dynamic. It provides maximum output from both the engine and the rear motor. The engine and motor aren’t connected mechanically, but they are well integrated. In this mode, the transmission holds gears longer, the throttle livens up, and the Tonale can hit 60 mph from a stop in a quoted 5.6 seconds. It’s not a jolt of power, but it’s plenty for everyday needs.
N stands for Natural, and it aims for a balance of power without compromise. Drivers have to go harder on the throttle to get up to speed, but it’s the more efficient choice.
A mode, or Advanced efficiency, aims to run the Tonale on electric power at all times. However, heavy throttle application or exceeding 85 mph will turn on the engine. The little turbo-4 is pretty smooth, but it’s still coarse in comparison to the placid electric power. The Tonale has only decent power in this mode, though it can be driven exclusively on electric power for its roughly 30 miles of range. A separate e-Save button maintains the state of battery charge for drivers who may need to drive on electric power alone in some situations.
Alfa Romeo aims to make the Tonale the sportiest vehicle in the class, and adds some hardware to get there. That includes standard 4-piston front calipers that clamp 13.5-inch rotors and optional adjustable dampers. The vehicle uses independent suspension with MacPherson struts front and rear, and has a rather quick 13.6:1 steering ratio.
A small size also contributes to a sporty demeanor. Light steering sends the Tonale quickly in a new direction. The agility is aided by a relatively low ground clearance of 5.6 inches, which is about the same as a Toyota Camry. The available adjustable dampers have only comfort and sport settings, and while the firmer setting further limits the already controlled body lean, the ride still doesn’t get too harsh. The short 103.8-inch wheelbase can make the ride busy, though. The brakes are more than up to the task of hauling this 4,133-pound crossover to a stop.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Comfort & Quality
The Tonale has good space for a small vehicle.
It’s a small SUV, but the Tonale makes good use of its limited space. Good front seats and a roomy cargo area earn it a 7 out of 10 here.
Alfa Romeo outfits the Tonale with comfortable, sporty front seats that offer good headroom and legroom, but buyers have to move up to the top model to get power adjustments and anything other than cloth upholstery. Front seat occupants are surrounded by a mix of materials that includes soft-touch surfaces up high with harder plastics set lower. Aluminum trim adorns Ti and Veloce models.
The back seat has surprisingly good space, better than the larger Stelvio, which is more than six inches longer. The reason is the design of each vehicle. The Tonale’s front transverse engine layout takes up less space up front than the Stelvio’s longitudinal design and a MacPherson strut rear suspension robs less space than the Stelvio’s multi-link setup. That gives the Tonale a roomy 38.0 inches of legroom, which is enough for a 6-footer to sit behind another 6-footer, but not much more. The seat bottoms also sit high enough to provide decent comfort for long trips.
The hatch area also has a fairly useful 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 50.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. That’s on the small side for a crossover, but so is the Tonale itself.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Safety
The Tonale comes with many standard safety features, but has no crash-test scores.
How safe is the Alfa Romeo Tonale?
That will be determined when the Tonale gets crash tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS.
Alfa Romeo outfits every Tonale with blind-spot monitors with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, active lane control, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-path detection, a driver-attention monitor, and automatic emergency braking. Buyers can also get a surround-view camera system, automatic parking, and a system that can handle the vehicle controls in some highway situations. Vision out the front is good, but the view to the rear is partially obstructed by the rear pillars.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Features
The Tonale has a lengthy list of standard features and a good infotainment system.
The Tonale’s strong list of standard equipment and its easy-to-use infotainment system earn it a score of 7 out of 10 here.
The $44,590 Tonale Sprint comes standard with adaptive LED matrix headlights, ambient interior lighting, wireless smartphone charging, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Which Alfa Romeo Tonale should I buy?
We recommend moving up to the $46,590 Ti model for its adjustable dampers. It also adds a hands-free power tailgate and aluminum interior trim.
How much is a fully loaded Alfa Romeo Tonale?
The Veloce costs $49,090 and comes with paddle shifters, Alcantara upholstery, 8-way power front seats, and 19-inch wheels.
Tonale infotainment
The Tonale has a decent-size 10.3-inch touchscreen that runs parent company Stellantis’ Uconnect5 software, which reacts quickly to driver inputs and presents an easy-to-use interface. Up to five drivers can customize their homescreens, as well as their radio stations, temperature settings, and seating positions. While 10.3 inches is a decent size, the screen’s low profile makes it feel smaller.
An E-Hybrid screen has power flow and driving history screens to help drivers monitor the powertrain and aim for better efficiency. A Performance screen also displays several gauge readouts.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Fuel Economy
A plug-in hybrid with a small engine, the Tonale promises useful electric range and fuel efficiency when running on gas.
Is the Alfa Romeo Tonale good on gas?
It’s only a plug-in hybrid, so, yes, it’s efficient. While EPA fuel economy ratings are not yet available, its promised 30-plus miles of electric range earns it an 8 here.
