From sedate A6 all the way up to ferocious RS 6 Avant, the 2024 Audi A6 lineup offers something for every luxury shopper.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Audi A6? What does it compare to?
The 2024 A6 is Audi’s midsize car and it’s available in sedan and wagon forms. It compares well to the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Is the 2024 Audi A6 a good car?
The A6 range impresses at every step of the way, whether as a base A6 sedan, sporty S6, or downright rapid RS 6. It’s a 7.2 out of 10 on account of thrilling acceleration and high-tech features. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Audi A6?
The A6 sees revised front and rear styling this year, including newly standard matrix LED headlights. The RS 6 wagon sees a 30-hp bump, though Audi has also seen fit to remove some sound deadening to save weight. It’ll be quicker—but also a bit louder inside—than before.
A6 and S6 versions come only as a four-door sedan, while the Allroad and RS 6 are wagons. All share a clean, conservative look outside, though additional rugged (Allroad) or aggressive (RS 6) flourishes help differentiate each version. Inside, look for clean, slick lines and lots of tech—generally presented in an intuitive manner.
The base A6 sedan’s 2.0-liter turbo-4 provides adequate grunt, though we’d step up to the more powerful boosted V-6s offered in 335 and 444-hp tunes. The RS 6 belts out 621 hp this year, good for a 3.3-second run to 60 mph. The base 4-cylinder’s 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gives way to a conventional 8-speed automatic on other versions. All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup.
Fuel economy ranges from just 17 mpg combined in the RS 6 to a solid 26 mpg combined for the 4-cylinder A6.
Spacious and well-equipped inside, the A6 lineup fits its hefty pricing. Look for standard leather and gorgeous materials throughout, with softer hides and more exotic trims readily available on the options list. Interior space is good, but sedans have a small trunk. That’s rectified in wagon versions, though.
Audi fits a wide range of crash-avoidance and driver-assistance features to the A6 lineup, but don’t look for any hands-free driving assistance.
How much does the 2024 Audi A6 cost?
Pricing varies greatly across the wide range of A6 versions. A base 4-cylinder sedan checks in at $58,395 to start, though most models on dealer lots will be in the mid-$60s. The Allroad starts just south of $70,000, while the RS 6 wagon comes in at $126,895 before options.
Where is the 2024 Audi A6 made?
In Germany.
2024 Audi A6 Styling
The 2024 Audi A6’s styling doesn’t thrill.
Is the Audi A6 a good-looking car?
In most versions, the 2024 A6 wears clean, sharp lines. Its conservative look should age well against some rivals with more daring styling, but it’s nowhere near as interesting as Audi’s own A7. We rate the range at 7 out of 10, with points above average for simple exterior styling and a classy cabin.
The A6 comes in two basic forms: sedan and wagon, the latter of which Audi calls Avant. Base A6 sedans have a slightly different look this year, but you’ll have to squint to see their revised front and rear lighting. The S6 is nearly the same, aside from slightly different bumpers and wheels.
We like the A6 Allroad even more. Its classic long-roof proportions look great, even with all the buffed-up unpainted plastic cladding. The RS 6 Avant has the same basic shape as the A6 Allroad, albeit with color-matched trim, vents, intakes, and other go-fast bits.
Open the doors and you’ll find big screens and a smattering of conventional buttons and knobs. There’s little here that truly thrills, even though various upholstery hues and standard leather can dress things up.
2024 Audi A6 Performance
From sedate to saucy, the 2024 Audi A6 lineup offers an impressive range of performance.
Audi’s mid-size sedan is just fine in base 4-cylinder form, but adding more cylinders really opens things up. We rate the range at 7 out of 10 overall based on decent power in base form and a comfortable ride. Figure at least another point—if not two—for the RS 6 Avant.
Is the Audi A6 4WD?
Yes, but what system is underneath depends on what engine is underhood. Those badged 45 TFSI and 55 TFSI (keep reading) are capable of disconnecting the rear axle to run on front-wheel drive only for improved fuel economy, while others have permanent all-wheel drive.
How fast is the Audi A6?
Base models are called 45 TFSI and they make use of a 248-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. They’re fine, but the premium for the 55 TFSI’s 335-hp twin-turbo V-6 is reasonable enough that we know where we’d spend our money, especially since it’s the mandatory engine choice on our preferred A6 Allroad. The 55 is downright quick from any speed, with plenty of power in reserve for effortless highway passing.
The S6 tosses in a different V-6 that puts out a hearty 444 hp. It’s rapid, to say the least. Figure mid-four seconds for the run to 60 mph, which is borderline supercar territory.
The lineup culminates in the wagon-only RS 6 (IYKYK), which uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 to push 621 hp to all four corners. We’ve yet to test this year’s RS 6, which has 30 more hp than last year, but we imagine it’ll be just as rapid as Audi’s 3.3-second 0-60 mph estimate suggests. Audi also quotes a near-200-mph top speed, should you find yourself on a very long closed course.
The base A6 has a soft, composed ride. Other versions are generally firmer, with the exception of the A6 Allroad. That model can feel a bit springy, but ultimately it provides the most comfortable ride of the bunch.
Look for quick-witted steering in all, though heft increases with power output.
Overall, the S6 provides the most admirable balance between day-to-day comfort and performance, though even the RS 6 isn’t punishing thanks to its adaptive dampers.
2024 Audi A6 Comfort & Quality
While far from expressively styled, the 2024 Audi A6 nonetheless has a luxurious cabin.
You’ll find lots of space and nice materials inside the 2024 Audi A6. Opt for a wagon and you’ll also have plenty of room for cargo. The range rates a 7 overall, but wagons would be an 8 thanks to their SUV-rivaling cargo space.
Standard leather upholstery is a good starting point, though the A6 has comfy front seats with power adjustment and three-stage heating. Optional cooling and massaging arrive as you spend more money. S6 and RS 6 versions have more seat bolstering that can be confining for wider passengers.
Rear-seat legroom is reasonable and headroom impresses, especially compared to the somewhat tight A7.
Sedans have just 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space. That grows to 30 cubes in wagons, which isn’t far off of some SUVs with a similar footprint.
Sure, the A6 lacks the Benz E-Class’ styling verve inside, but it’s outfitted with beautiful materials.
2024 Audi A6 Safety
The 2024 Audi A6 range is a decidedly safe choice.
How safe is the Audi A6?
It does well in crash tests and it comes with a wide range of driver-assistance tech. We rate the lineup at 8 out of 10 thanks to a Top Safety Pick+ score from the IIHS, a five-star score from the NHTSA, and widespread crash-avoidance features.
All models have automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and blind-spot monitors. Adaptive cruise control is optional on the least-costly trim level and standard otherwise.
2024 Audi A6 Features
Judiciously optioned, the 2024 Audi A6 can be a luxury-segment value.
Audi’s mid-size models can be a decent value so long as you’re careful with options. Then again, it’s not that hard to be prudent since Audi doesn’t offer an especially high level of customization.
We rate the lineup at 8 out of 10 thanks to standard fare, a good infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen, and its strong list of options. The 4-year/50,000-mile warranty is par for the luxury course.
The A6 range starts at $58,395 for the 45 TFSI sedan. That model includes leather seats that are heated and power-adjustable up front, a sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, navigation, a digital instrument cluster, and LED headlights. An extra $4,500 buys the far more powerful 55 TFSI engine.
Which Audi A6 should I buy?
We’re fine with the base Premium trim, at least as long as you spend $2,250 for a package with adaptive cruise control, a wireless charging pad, heated steering wheel, and a surround-view camera system.
The mid-level Premium Plus adds another $1,500 or so for better LED headlights and Bang & Olufsen audio. It’s also the gateway to massaging and cooled front seats
That said, we’re smitten with the A6 Allroad. It costs $69,595. You’ll have to spend $3,300 for adaptive cruise control, which is smartly paired with other niceties such as insulated glass, four-zone climate control, cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and rear window sunshades. Add metallic paint and Audi will want about $74,000. That’s the ideal A6, so far as we’re concerned.
How much is a fully loaded Audi A6?
Given someone else's budget, we'd dive right into the RS 6 Avant at $126,895 to start. This high-output dream machine can be optioned up to over $150,000 with various design elements, a sport exhaust, night vision, 19 speakers, and an air suspension.
2024 Audi A6 Fuel Economy
The 2024 Audi A6 can be an efficient choice so long as you stick with less—rather than more—power.
Is the Audi A6 good on gas?
It’s not terrible. Top versions come in at 25 to 26 mpg combined, which is enough to score a 3 on the TCC scale.
The greenest version is the base 4-cylinder, which is estimated at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 26 combined. Allroad and 55 TFSI versions are rated at 22/30/25 mpg, which isn’t too bad. The S6 checks in at 22 mpg combined, while the RS 6 Avant is estimated at just 17 mpg combined.
