features & specs
With its sultry shape and turbocharged power, the 2023 Audi A7 lineup can prove a tempting upgrade from humdrum sedans.
What kind of vehicle is the 2023 Audi A7? What does it compare to?
The 2023 Audi A7, S7, and RS 7 are luxurious mid-size cars with strong turbocharged engines and big trunks. Shop them against the BMW 5- and 8-Series models as well as the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.
Is the 2023 Audi A7 a good car?
The 2023 Audi A7 is a sedan—no, wait, a hatchback—with strong turbocharged power, svelte style, and a huge trunk. It’s a 6.6 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2023 Audi A7?
For the most part, Audi’s 7-line models see few changes for 2023. Look for wider availability of adaptive cruise control and a new, entry-level version of the mid-range S7, plus myriad small optional equipment tweaks. A previously available plug-in hybrid has been quietly dropped.
Though they make look like A6 sedans at first glance, these cars feature a sleeker roofline that results in a smidge less rear-seat headroom and a fair amount more cargo space. What’s your priority? We’d gladly pay the premium for Audi’s A7, S7, and RS 7 models.
Inside, they’re all A6, which means a businesslike demeanor including plenty of screens, nice materials, and numerous high-tech features.
Turbocharged powertrains range from 335 hp in base A7 form up to a screaming, 600-hp V-8 in the RS 7. There’s no slowpoke here, and all models pair their turbocharged engines with slick-shifting automatic gearboxes, standard all-wheel drive, and a poised chassis.
Fuel economy is just OK, though. That sleek shape doesn’t necessarily mean frugality. Look for 24 mpg combined at best.
The A7 lineup impresses inside, with good space and nice materials. The trunk expands to as much as 49 cubic feet with the rear seat folded, which makes these cars genuine SUV rivals when it comes to utility.
While the A7 hasn’t been crash tested, its A6 sibling is a top choice. Wide availability of crash-avoidance tech works in this big Audi’s favor, especially compared to rivals that wall off adaptive cruise control behind various other extra-cost features.
How much does the 2023 Audi A7 cost?
The base A7 runs $71,295, which is hardly cheap. With standard leather seats, 20-inch wheels, navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, a digital instrument cluster, and various driver-assistance features, it’s pretty well outfitted, though. We’d still spend $2,300 for a package with a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and a wireless charging pad.
Where is the 2023 Audi A7 made?
In Germany.
2023 Audi A7 Styling
The 2023 Audi A7 pairs a sleek body with a high-tech cabin.
Is the Audi A7 a good-looking car?
It’s very nice. We like the way its long, sloping roof works with otherwise conservative detailing. Sure, the A7 lacks the drama of Mercedes-Benz’s CLS, but it still works well enough outside to garner two points above average. We award another for its nice interior, bringing it to an 8 out of 10.
Audi doesn’t skimp on details, either. The A7 rides on big 20-inch wheels even in its cheapest form, with 21-inchers on the options list. Plenty of metallic paint hues can dress it up for not too much more, either.
Inside, look for an A6-sourced dash that’s functional, elegant, and high-tech. Brighter interior hues make it feel more airy, though Audi once offered far more interior colors across the entire A7, S7, and RS 7 lineups.
2023 Audi A7 Performance
The 2023 Audi A7 looks fast—and it is.
Every model is quick, with a good ride/handling balance. Those assets earn these cars a 7 out of 10.
Is the Audi A7 4WD?
Yes, all-wheel drive is standard.
How fast is the Audi A7?
There’s not a slow version.
Base cars use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that pushes out 335 hp, which is enough for a 0-60 mph sprint of just over five seconds. S7 models slide in a 2.9-liter V-6 with two turbos that ekes out 444 hp, which is enough to cut a second from the 60 mph run.
Base cars ride firmly but comfortably. S7s are a bit stiffer, with sharper steering to match their extra engine output. Both models use a well-behaved 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The RS 7 is its own beast, with a 591 hp 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. With an 8-speed automatic, these cars vault to 60 mph in well under four seconds. They are downright fast, though they lack the visceral thrills offered by top Mercedes and BMW models. They’re just not as sharp overall—but they’re cheaper, more practical, and a lot more livable, so keep that in mind.
2023 Audi A7 Comfort & Quality
Stylish, with a hint of practicality, the 2023 Audi A7 is an easy-to-justify luxury car.
Sure, it’s not as practical as Audi’s own A6-based wagons, but the A7 has a big cabin and an oversized trunk. It’s an 8 on the TCC scale.
All models come with leather seats that are power-adjustable and heated up front. S7s and RS 7s each get more front-seat bolstering, but no model is truly confining. Rear-seat riders have decent leg room and acceptable head space, even with the sloping roofline.
The trunk expands from an impressive 19 cubic feet to nearly 50 cubes with the second-row seatbacks flopped forward.
Interior materials please in base form and thrill with options such as softer leathers and more exotic woods.
2023 Audi A7 Safety
The 2023 Audi A7 lacks crash-test scores.
How safe is the Audi A7?
It’s probably a good choice, but the IIHS and the NHTSA have yet to weigh in. For now, we can’t rate these models.
All A7, S7, and RS 7 models come with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors. Adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and active lane control are widely available.
2023 Audi A7 Features
The 2023 Audi A7 easily justifies its hefty price tag with plenty of features.
Audi packs a lot into its A7. We score these models at 8 out of 10 thanks to good standard equipment, plentiful options, and a big infotainment screen.
Base cars now run $71,295 before options. That money buys big 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, a 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen in the center of the dash, smartphone mirroring, a big sunroof, and leather seats.
Audi’s 4-year/50,000-mile warranty is par for the luxury segment course.
Which Audi A7 should I buy?
The base A7 Premium is good enough for us, but we’d spend $2,300 for the Convenience package with its adaptive cruise control, active lane control, surround-view camera system, and wireless charging pad. The Premium Plus trim level costs $5,100 more than the base A7, which buys Convenience package features and Bang & Olufsen audio, should you want more speakers.
Audi wants about $85,000 for a base S7, to which we’d still add $2,100 worth of adaptive cruise control and other driver-assistance features.
How much is a fully loaded Audi A7?
The 2023 Audi RS 7 delivers the most power—for the most money. Audi wants $125,000 for the cheapest RS 7. Fancy paint, black-out trim, carbon ceramic brakes, more leather, and driver-assistance tech can bloat the price tag to more than $160,000, though.
2023 Audi A7 Fuel Economy
The 2023 Audi A7 may be sleek, but it’s not miserly.
Is the Audi A7 good on gas?
It’s not great. The base version checks in with EPA estimates of 21 mpg city, 30 highway, 24 combined. The S7 is thirstier yet at 19/26/22 mpg. Those two models both rate 2 on the TCC scale.
The powerful RS 7 is a guzzler at 14/21/17 mpg.
