The 2024 BMW iX stands out from the growing electric SUV class, for better and worse.
What kind of car is the 2024 BMW iX? What does it compare to?
The iX electric luxury crossover SUV seats five. It makes a quirkier design statement than the Audi E-Tron SUV, the Cadillac Lyriq, or the Mercedes EQE SUV, but it might be easier to process than the Tesla Model X’s steering yoke and falcon wing doors.
Is the 2024 BMW iX a good SUV?
The BMW iX rates high for comfort, features, efficiency, and AWD range that exceeds 300 miles. But its design may turn heads for the wrong reason, and its handling doesn’t match its quickness. It earns a TCC Rating of 8.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 BMW iX?
The BMW iX carries over for the most part, though its battery pack is now rated at 110.4 kwh (from 105.2 kwh) and the EPA range lowers to 307 miles, but that’s with any of the three wheel size options, whether 20, 21, or 22 inches. The M60i tops out at 296 miles, from 288 last year.
The BMW iX channels some of the quirkiness of the discontinued i3 but, inflated to fill an SUV body, the garish details can overwhelm its otherwise stately proportions. We’re looking at you, butterfly wing grille. The interior smooths some unusual details into an uncluttered dash headlined by a hexagonal steering wheel and a curved screen display that’s much more cohesive than its Mercedes-Benz rival.
The big 110.4-kwh battery pack feeds a dual-motor system that makes 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque in the xDrive50i or up to 610 hp and 811 lb-ft in the M60. That launches it to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The M60 upgrades the independent suspension with a stiffer tune and rear air springs, but no matter the tune, the iX handles without the feedback and precision—the fun—of performance crossovers with less impressive specs. Standard all-wheel drive and four levels of regen braking come on every iX.
The iX charges from 10-80% in as little as 40 minutes, at a peak of 195 kw. Battery preconditioning on certain models helps to maximize the DC fast-charge rate.
Sized nearly the same as the BMW X5 midsize SUV, the iX embraces an open floor plan since it doesn’t need to make space for an engine, transmission, or driveshaft tunnel. It seats five in comfort, and has voluminous cargo space even though it lacks the front trunk found on most other crossover EVs.
Also lacking in the iX are official crash-test results. BMW equips it with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection front and rear and adaptive cruise control.
The iX offers up BMW’s eighth-generation iDrive interface, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity plus wireless device charging. Instead of buttons, BMW has added haptic surfaces both around the iDrive controller dial and on the steering wheel that take some getting used to, but then fit well in the overall character of the car. Voice commands, gesture control, a touchscreen, and steering wheel controls lend any number of hands to controlling all the information therein.
How much does the 2024 BMW iX cost?
The 2024 BMW iX xDrive 50 Convenience costs $92,795 while the Premium trim sits at $97,095, including a modest $995 destination fee. It comes well equipped with everything from a 14.9-inch touchscreen to heated front seats, and options range from Bowers & Wilkins sound to massaging seats. We’d steer away from the $112,495 iX M60; the performance upsets the otherwise calm nature of the car.
Where is the 2024 BMW iX made?
In Dingolfing, Germany.
2024 BMW iX Styling
The 2024 BMW iX could be attractive with less detail.
Is the BMW iX a good-looking car?
It’s…it’s…no, not really. But it could be. To some, it is. It has the right proportions and the right profile for a luxury electric crossover, but then BMW slaps on some gaudy details that are impossible not to see. It loses a point for such vanity, though the otherwise serene interior earns a point. It’s a 5.
The big wheels, low stance, and floating roof all work well with its short dash-to-axle ratio, but on closer inspection details like the gigantic butterfly grille and narrow taillights look like something the ‘80s might’ve considered futuristic. It’s a design departure, which is expected with a first electric crossover, but it departs from what historically have been attractive blends of power and grace in BMW SUVs.
Good thing you can’t see it from the inside, as the cabin upholds the BMW luxury expectation. A tiered floating console bedazzles with crystal-like accents and shifter, while wood trim grounds its lineage. There are a lot of black surfaces, but plenty of options exist to brighten it up. A hexagonal wheel design fronts a digital display curved under a pane of glass, and most climate functions have been moved to the screen. It results in an open, uncluttered dash, but it also results in more reliance on the infotainment system.
2024 BMW iX Performance
The 2024 BMW iX has EV quickness but lacks BMW handling.
Either version of the BMW iX sprints to 60 mph in less than five seconds, earning two points on our scale. It earns another point for its poise and comfort, but loses a point for uncharacteristically detached handling.
Is the BMW iX four-wheel drive?
Yes. The BMW iX comes only with dual-motor all-wheel drive.
How fast is the BMW iX?
The iX can be had in quick and quicker powertrain options. The two electrically excited synchronous motors in the xDrive50i version excite up to 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. On the ground, that translates to a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.
The iX M60 cranks the amp to 11 for up to 610 hp and 811 lb-ft in launch mode to zip to 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. It may not seem blistering on paper in this EV day of sub-three-second times, but considering the chunky shape and chunkier 5,818-pound curb weight (the 50i weighs 5,670 pounds), it’s a breathless hoot off the line.
The aluminum suspension holds front double-wishbones and rear multi-links, and BMW offers a rear-only air suspension that varies the ride height up to 1.2 inches from its ground clearance of 8.8 inches. In Sport mode or above 87 mph, it drops 0.4 inches, or it can lift 0.8 inches from normal for more curb clearance.
The M60i comes with the adaptive air suspension, a stiffer suspension tune, and M Sport brakes to better arrest its force. In general the brake feel is light but predictive. A choice of four regen modes includes an adaptive mode that matches the traffic ahead, kind of like a lower speed adaptive cruise control but through regenerative braking. It takes a minute to get used to it, but it soon becomes a welcome relief.
For the most part, the iX balances the expectations of M acceleration with the comfort of a crossover. Despite the low center of mass due to the heavy battery pack between the axles, and the available air suspension, the iX handles too removed from the road. There’s no real steering weighting and little communication with the pavement, and hitting curves lends a feeling of entitlement more than excitement. As in, been there, done that, blah. The disconnect disembodies the vehicle from its sharp acceleration.
On the other side, even with 22-inch wheels, the iX has one of the comfiest, most serene rides of any other electric SUV we’ve tested.
2024 BMW iX Comfort & Quality
The BMW iX optimizes interior space as only electric cars can.
The BMW iX matches its quirky exterior design with an interior optimized for people and their things, with touch points that are no less quirky, including cut-glass seat controls as well as pushbutton door handles and gold trim. It earns points each for its comfy front seats, roomy rear seats, stretch-out space for five passengers, and 35.5 cubic feet of cargo space—more than the BMW X5. We kick it to a perfect 10 for its fit and finish, even though some of its quirky controls challenge the fun in functional.
The wide open cockpit with the low cowl features a tiered center console that comes up short of the dash, like a diving platform against a backdrop of mixed materials such as wood trim, rich leather, and aluminum accents flanked with gold. The power adjustable front seats and power steering wheel have enough adjustments to fit most any size, but option up for the multifunction seats for all the support, and massagers.
Ample headroom and 38.9 inches of rear legroom opens up enough space in the back to fit three adults across, and behind them, all their gear. Fold down the 40/20/40-split rear seats and the cargo capacity expands to 77.9 cubic feet, making it roomier for cargo and people than the BMW X5. A tray below the cargo floor can hide or secure items, and smart uses of available space grace the door panels and cubbies of the iX.
The iX features frameless doors, as in BMW coupes, that provide an excellent seal from wind noise; other sound deadening keeps the road noise at bay. The door mechanisms—like a few other elements around the iX’s cabin—can feel more finicky than luxurious.
2024 BMW iX Safety
The 2024 BMW iX comes with decent standard safety tech, but the options are next level.
How safe is the BMW iX?
Officially, we don’t know, as neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA have crash tested the BMW iX. It’s unlikely the NHTSA ever will since it rarely tests luxury niche vehicles. It is likely, however, that the aluminum space frame with carbon-fiber reinforced plastic and high-strength steel will make the iX withstand a crash.
To avoid such scenarios, BMW equips it with driver-assist tech such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection front and rear, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A $2,300 Driving Assistant Professional package adds a more sophisticated version of adaptive cruise control that restarts from a stop and a limited hands-free driving system, as well as a remote parking system that requires the additional add-on of a surround-view camera system.
For more basic safety consideration, the low beltline and relatively thin pillars make it easy to see outside of the iX.
2024 BMW iX Features
The 2024 BMW iX has more options than a retirement strategy.
The 2024 BMW iX comes in two variants based on performance, the xDrive50i and the M60. The iX xDrive50i can be had in Convenience or Premium grades for $92,795 and $97,095, respectively, including a modest $995 destination fee. For that high price, BMW loads it with standard features but a deep options list accompanies any model, in the BMW way.
Those two assets earn it a point each here, as does its 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty. BMW simplified its iDrive infotainment system and made its icons larger across its 14.9-inch touchscreen, earning another point here to a 9 total.
Which BMW iX should I buy?
It’s a question of performance and options. The base iX xDrive50 Convenience comes with 20-inch aero wheels with non run-flat tires, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the large touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity and a wireless smartphone charger. It has all the new car features expected at this price, including dual USB-C ports in the front and rear rows, remote start, a 1-year satellite radio trial, heated power front seats covered in synthetic leather, and a panoramic sunroof. We’d be tempted to add the $2,200 Convenience package for a Harman Kardon sound system, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display.
The Premium grade adds that package along with massaging seats, a wifi hotspot, various soundscapes, an interior camera that snaps selfies or captures criminals, and options ranging from heated armrests to M Sport brakes with blue calipers and an air suspension.
How much is a fully loaded BMW iX?
The iX M60 costs $112,495 and incorporates the xDrive50’s Premium features.
2024 BMW iX Fuel Economy
With up to 307 miles of range, the 2024 BMW iX goes the distance.
Is the BMW iX good on energy?
The iX xDrive50 has an EPA-estimated range of 307 miles, and an efficiency rating of 2.4 miles per kwh. That’s a 9 here. It’s not the most efficient use of its large 110.4-kwh battery pack, but it’s relatively good for a dual-motor model. The upside is the range and rating of 83 MPGe remains the same on 20-, 21-, or 22-inch wheels. Odd.
The iX M60 has an EPA-estimated range of 296 miles with 21- or 22-inch wheels, and an 80 MPGe rating that also translates to 2.4 miles per kwh.
How long does it take to charge the BMW iX?
Expect just over 10 hours to charge either model to full on a 240-volt connection via an 11-kw onboard charger. With DC fast-charging, the iX reloads from 10-80% in as little as 40 minutes, with a potential peak of 195 kw. Battery preconditioning helps optimize the DC fast-charge rate. It could be free, too, in 30-minute sessions on the Electrify America network for the first two years of ownership.
