features & specs
The 2024 BMW X5 embraces electrification across the board, introduces a new cockpit interface, and comes with more standard features.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 BMW X5? What does it compare to?
The 2024 BMW X5 luxury SUV seats five passengers but it’s sized big enough to compete with other three-row luxury models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Genesis GV80. In M grades, it competes with the Porsche Cayenne.
Is the 2024 BMW X5 a good SUV?
The 2024 X5 returns with even more standard tech and convenience features, as well as updated engines with mild-hybrid systems throughout the lineup. The range of performance options and decidedly luxurious interior earns the 2024 X5 a high TCC Rating of 7.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 BMW X5?
A major refresh welcomes the 2024 BMW X5, with the introduction of a new user interface headlined by a 14.9-inch touchscreen that curves toward the driver under a single pane of glass shared with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Most of the climate functions have been relegated to the touchscreen, and an electronic gear nub replaces the gear lever on the console.
The front and rear ends get a mild makeover, with a thinner LED light signature and a new design to the DRLs that double as blinkers like sequential arrows, not unlike a lane merge light display in a construction zone. A new lower bumper ends with vertical air intakes to present a lower, meaner mug.
Electrification now spans the engine lineup for less emissions and greater power.
The revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 has a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that controls the stop/start function, boosts power off the line, and cuts engine power while coasting in Eco mode. The base X5 sDrive40i and all-wheel-drive xDrive40i now get 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, up 40 hp and 51 lb-ft from the 2023 model. It’s quicker, cleaner, and more efficient by 2 mpg.
The X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid also receives critical updates. A larger 25.7-kwh battery pack helps bump the electric range to 39 miles total, from 31. The new inline-6 and new synchronous motor conspire to make 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds.
The X5 M60i xDrive receives a mild-hybrid system with its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Output is 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and it hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. That mild-hybrid powertrain migrates for the first time to the X5 M Competition that makes 617 hp on its way to a 3.7-second 0-60 mph time.
The X5 only comes with five seats this year, and the lack of a third row optimizes the significant cargo space. It’s roomier, and the standard front sport buckets are as comfy as they are supportive. They can be upgraded with seat cooling and massagers, and heated armrests remain a BMW charm on par with the heated steering wheel. In back, a split tailgate makes grocery runs all the more secure.
One knock on the new X5 comes from the IIHS, who find the standard headlights to be limited, keeping it from earning a Top Safety Pick honor. BMW equips the X5 with safety tech such as automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors, but adaptive cruise control costs extra throughout the lineup.
How much does the 2024 BMW X5 cost?
The X5 costs about $3,500 more than the 2023 model, at $66,195 including a modest $995 destination fee. The base X5 sDrive40i comes with wireless smartphone connectivity as well as wireless smartphone charging, and an updated infotainment system with faster data processing. Standard comfort features include heated front sport seats covered in synthetic leather and a panoramic sunroof. That’s a pretty good haul for the increased price.
The 2024 X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid costs $73,495, while the M60i and its twin-turbo V-8 cost $90,000. It might be better on the budget and as an everyday driver than the $123,295 X5 M Competition.
Where is the 2024 BMW X5 made?
In Spartanburg, South Carolina.
2024 BMW X5 Styling
The 2024 BMW X5 wears fresh ends on its muscular bod, and the interior is streamlined.
Is the BMW X5 a good-looking car?
This generation of the X5 launched in 2019, and the thorough refresh modernizes BMW’s bestselling model on the inside and out. Its athletic looks, with plenty of vents and diffusers, earn a point as does its streamlined interior. It’s a 7.
BMW turns up the corners of its face into a smile with vertical air intakes that move the wide and low look into a chunkier SUV vibe. BMW didn’t go full beaver teeth on the grille, as it did on its M3/M4, opting instead to just illuminate it, if desired. The narrower LED headlights represent the biggest change, with arrow-shaped DRLs that double as indicators sweeping to the side. They replace the half-eyed LEDs squinting out of the 2023 model. A thinner taillight design parts like lips kissing the back end.
Inside marks a much bigger change, with a horizontal theme stretching open the cockpit. Like other new BMWs, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen curve under a single pane glass toward the driver. Most of the climate control buttons migrate into the touchscreen, leaving only a tiny band of controls for the hazards, defrosters, and volume knob. Slim center vents sit in between the touchscreen and climate bar, jutting out as the rest of the central dash recedes to the corners and underscored by a light bar. A controller dial and drive mode buttons remain in the console, which now has a pushbutton gear selector instead of a lever.
2024 BMW X5 Performance
The 2024 BMW X5 accelerates and handles like a smaller car.
Four powertrain options offer four distinct personalities but in general, the 2024 X5’s quick acceleration and sticky handling earn it a 7. The M60i and X5 M performance SUVs would earn another point to an 8.
Is the BMW X5 4WD?
Yes, except for the base sDrive40i that is rear-wheel drive, though it’s a $2,300 option. Every other X5 has xDrive, or all-wheel drive in BMW speak.
How fast is the BMW X5?
It starts off quickly then launches into the M range. The base X5 sDrive40i and its xDrive all-wheel-drive variant sport a revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, abetted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The mild hybrid is unnoticeable until coasting in Eco mode, when it takes over in silence and gives the engine a rest. It also helps boost power off the line and through the power band, shaving one second off last year’s 0-60 mph time to 5.2 seconds.
Paddle shifters let you pretend you’re smarter and quicker than the 8-speed automatic, and maybe it could be during uphill passing when a three-gear downshift is in order; 99% of the time, the 8-speed is a seamless zipper as understated as the mild-hybrid parts.
The 8-speed and mild-hybrid apply to the M60i xDrive, formerly known as the M50i. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 makes 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and it hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. This M-lite might be all the BMW X5 performance desired while still having a ride pliant enough for long distance cruising, unlike the kidney-punishing X5 M models.
The X5 M Competition gets the mild-hybrid system for the first time in any BMW M, and with the twin-turbo V-8 it makes 617 hp. It rears back on launch to sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph, but the available M Driver’s Package hits 177 mph. For a utility vehicle weighing 5,498 pounds, better test those limits on the track only or the widest, most uncrowded slice of Autobahn.
Or the X5 can also be used as a workhorse, towing up to 7,200 pounds (the xDrive50e PHEV tows up to 5,952 pounds), which is one of the highest ratings for a midsize crossover SUV.
2024 X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid updates
The X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid also receives critical updates. A larger 25.7-kwh battery pack helps bump the electric range by 8 miles to 39 miles total, which should satisfy most daily commuters in EV power only. The new inline-6 used in other models embraces greater efficiency with a new injection system and improved exhaust components, while a new synchronous motor increases output by 83 horsepower. Together, the powertrain produces 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. Additionally, at a max charge rate of 7.4 kw on a 240-volt connection, the xDrive50e can charge to full in three hours and 15 minutes.
Driving impressions to come on the plug-in hybrid.
2024 BMW X5 ride and handling
All models corner with verve, thanks in part to standard independent suspensions and adaptive dampers, but ride quality stiffens noticeably with wheels larger than the standard 20-inchers. The run-flat tires across the range also add some firmness. The available air suspension makes for a worthwhile upgrade to cushion the X5 from road sores, as well as raise the ground clearance for the occasional off-road jaunt or lower it for better efficiency.
The X5 M is no performance whim. With its active roll bars and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, the X5 M feels as if it shrinks the SUV down to a hatchback, but in everyday driving the suspension tuning can be unnecessarily stiff.
2024 BMW X5 Comfort & Quality
The 2024 BMW X5 seats five in comfort.
While Mercedes has charged its interiors to be a tech and light showcase, BMW takes a more conservative approach that lets materials such as wood trim and metallic piping stand on its own. With luxurious options such as heated armrests and a split tailgate that can double as a seat, BMW fits the X5 with thoughtful touches. That earns a point as do comfy power front seats that are heated, rear seats that allow for 37.0 inches of legroom, and a huge cargo area that can expand from 34.0 cubic feet to 72.3 cubic feet with the rear seats power-folded down. That earns it a 9.
This year, BMW doesn’t offer a third row that was only functional for short carpool runs.
The synthetic leather upholstery looks like the real thing, or for $1,950 you can opt for leather in shades ranging from white to caramel. Open-pore wood trim accents the dash, or three other wood trims are optional at no cost. The supportive front seats with power lumbar support can be upgraded with massagers.
In back, the tailgate opens in two parts, with a small part about six inches tall opening up from the floor to prevent items such as a watermelon from rolling out. It can also be folded out to make for a tailgate seat extending far enough over the bumper to not sully your leggings.
2024 BMW X5 Safety
BMW equips the 2024 BMW X5 with good driver-assist tech, but the IIHS faults its headlights.
How safe is the BMW X5?
The NHTSA has not crashed the 2024 BMW X5 but those funky new headlights cost it a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS due to inadequate high-beam projection; expect BMW to modify them at some point in 2024 to qualify for the award. The new X5 earned top “Good” ratings in all six crash tests, however.
For now, the X5 earns a point each for its standard and available driver-assist tech. It’s a 7.
Standard driver-assist features include automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, a driver attention monitor, and automatic reverse parking that can back the SUV out of a tight spot without the driver in the vehicle.
Adaptive cruise control costs extra as part of the $2,100 Driving Assistance Professional package that allows for limited hands-free driving in certain situations. An available surround-view camera system helps see over the rear headrests and beyond the chunky roof pillars.
2024 BMW X5 Features
The 2024 BMW X5 can range in price from $66,195 to double that.
The 2024 BMW X5 costs $66,195, including a modest $995 destination fee. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 more on the X5 xDrive40i. It earns a point each for its standard equipment, vast options list, large touchscreen and intuitive enough infotainment system, and for its 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with three years or 36,000 miles of maintenance included. That adds up to a 9.
Riding on 20-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the base X5 sDrive40i comes with a digital key, a 1-year satellite radio trial, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity as well as wireless smartphone charging, and an updated infotainment system with faster data processing. Standard comfort features include heated front sport seats covered in synthetic leather and a panoramic sunroof.
Which BMW X5 should I buy?
The base turbo-6 has plenty of power and plenty of features, though we might be tempted to add leather seats and the Driving Assistance package mentioned above for adaptive cruise control. That keeps the price at about $68,000.
For X5 intenders who log mostly local miles, consider the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid for $5,000 more to $73,495. In addition to the increased range, it has a comforting air suspension.
How much is a fully loaded BMW X5?
The 2024 X5 M Competition tops the performance and price charts at $123,295. It adds nicer leather, adaptive cruise control, massaging seats, a sport exhaust system, staggered 21- and 22-inch wheels, and a suspension so firm it might exceed its need. Consider the M60i for $90,295.
2024 BMW X5 Fuel Economy
The mild-hybrid in the 2024 BMW X5 boosts fuel economy to 25 mpg combined.
Is the BMW X5 good on gas?
It’s better than it was last year thanks to the mild-hybrid setup, improving by 2 mpg to 23 mpg city, 27 highway, 25 combined for the 40i in both rear- and all-wheel drive. That’s good for a 3.
It goes down from there.
The M60i drops to a 17/22/19-mpg slash line, and the X5 M Competition gets 13/18/15 mpg. The X5 plug-in hybrid has not been certified yet, but BMW estimates it has an electric range of up to 39 miles, and the equivalent of 58 mpg combined.
Premium fuel is recommended on every X5.
