The 2023 BMW X5 embodies BMW’s best: relatively restrained style, terrific powertrains, balanced handling, and myriad tech options.
What kind of vehicle is the 2023 BMW X5? What does it compare to?
The 2023 BMW X5 is a luxury SUV with seats for five or seven passengers. It compares well with the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Genesis GV80, and the Acura MDX.
Is the 2023 BMW X5 a good SUV?
The 2023 X5 delivers thrilling acceleration in any range, paired with a terrific ride and sharp handling. The X5 M can even be a big track star, if such a thing fits your needs. We rate it 6.8 out of 10 thanks mostly to its road manners and its tech portfolio. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2023 BMW X5?
Not much. The ongoing chip shortage prompted BMW to drop its gesture control system for 2023. BMW offers a wireless phone charger this year.
The X5 was introduced for 2019 and its muscular looks carry over unchanged and not as over the top as some other BMW SUVs (cough, X7, cough). While not as sumptuous as its Mercedes-Benz GLE rival, the X5 has a tall, purposeful look that gets downright sporty as you work your way up the lineup to where flared fenders, big wheels, and plenty of vents accompany more power.
Base (40i) and plug-in hybrid (40e) models use a smooth inline-6. A ferocious twin-turbo V-8 steps in at M50i and full-on X5 M levels. Power outputs range from a not-so-sedate 335 hp up to a gnarly 617 hp with the X5 M Competition. Even the cheapest ones zip to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, while the fastest models can race sports cars with their 3.5-second sprint.
All-wheel drive comes on all but the entry-level version, and every X5 makes use of an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy ranges from a high of 23 mpg combined to just 15 mpg combined in X5 M guise. The xDrive45e hybrid can go up to 31 miles on a full charge, though it’s rated at a less-impressive 20 mpg combined afterward.
Inside, the X5 offers a high-tech, comfortable experience for five passengers. Two more can be wedged into optional third-row seats, but those with regular need to haul more than five will want to save up for the X7. For cargo, the X5 is a great choice made even more appealing by the unusual split tailgate arrangement.
The X5 has a somewhat mixed crash-test record, though automatic emergency braking comes standard and a wide range of driver-assistance features are on the options list if your pockets are deep enough.
How much does the 2023 BMW X5 cost?
The X5 starts at a hefty $62,595, including a modest $995 destination fee. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 more on the X5 xDrive40i. That money buys synthetic leather, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and a big sunroof. BMW tempts with seemingly thousands of options; it’s possible to double your cost) with a loaded X5 M model.
Where is the 2023 BMW X5 made?
In Spartanburg, South Carolina.
2023 BMW X5 Styling
The 2023 BMW X5 fits the automaker’s mold.
Is the BMW X5 a good-looking car?
It’s not BMW’s most daring model, but that’s just fine with us. We think the X5 looks good enough inside and out to earn points above average for a 7 out of 10.
The X5 casts a muscular shadow, which stands in marked contrast to the quiet elegance of the XC90 and the voluptuousness of the GLE-Class. BMW doesn’t shy away from big fender flares and lots of vents and diffusers. Versions touched by the automaker’s M Division go farther, with the full-on X5 M perhaps looking a little too boy-racer for some.
Inside, the X5 is modern but comparatively conservative. A 12.3-inch display perched at the top of the dash is complemented by a similarly-sized instrument cluster. While synthetic leather is standard, real hides are worthwhile to dress things up. BMW offers tons of color and trim combinations, too, so shop wisely before settling on all-black or light gray.
2023 BMW X5 Performance
The 2023 BMW X5 offers an exceptionally broad range of performance.
There’s no mild option in the 2023 BMW X5 lineup. This big SUV puts out plenty of power in base sDrive40i form, and it lathers on additional grunt the more you spend. Add handling that defies its heft to its terrific acceleration and we wind up at a 7 out of 10 for performance.
Is the BMW X5 4WD?
Only the base sDrive40i sends power rearward. Other versions are badged xDrive, which is BMW-speak for all-wheel drive.
How fast is the BMW X5?
It’s no slouch in any form.
Base 40i models use a 335-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, which is good for a 0-60 zip of around 5.3 seconds. The 45e supplements that engine with an electric motor and a 17.1-kwh lithium-ion battery pack for a combined output of 389 hp. This setup allows for tailpipe emissions-free commuting for 31 miles, but It’s much heavier than the base X5. Acceleration stays about the same.
Thrilling performance begins with M50i versions that use a twin-turbo V-8 to hustle 523 hp to the wheels. It slices the 0-60 mph sprint to just over four seconds. X5 M versions amp up their 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 to the tune of 600 hp (or 617 hp in Competition form). Look for a 3.5-second rip to 60 mph, which is as fast as many sports cars.
All models corner with verve, but ride quality stiffens noticeably with wheels larger than the standard 19-inchers. BMW fits run-flat tires across the range, which can result in a firmer ride than you might want. Adaptive dampers help, while the available air suspension smooths things out a bit more.
When it comes to the X5 M, try before you buy. We find the suspension tuning to be unnecessarily stiff for day-to-day commuting. Sure, it’s a track star, but how many drivers are hooning their 6,000-pound, six-figure SUVs, after all?
2023 BMW X5 Comfort & Quality
The 2023 BMW X5 seats five in supreme comfort. Skip the optional third row.
BMW fits a beautiful, spacious cabin to any version of the X5. Spend a bit more and you’ll find soft leather and stylish wood options, too. We rate the range at 9 out of 10, with points above average for the way it handles passengers in rows one and two plus a big cargo area and an overall luxurious feel.
The front seats have standard power adjustment and heating. Cooling, massage, and even more adjustments are optional, as is real leather upholstery in place of synthetic hides.
Row two serves up 37.0 inches of legroom and it’s accessed via wide-opening doors. Three abreast is doable, too. We’d pass on the optional third row, which is costly and will be a tight fit for anyone beyond their pre-teen years.
The split-folding tailgate is a fun touch; the lower portion is small enough that it doesn’t really get in the way when loading up bigger or heavier objects. Cargo space grows from a modest 34.0 cubic feet to more than double that with the middle row folded down.
2023 BMW X5 Safety
The 2023 BMW X5 can be fitted with impressive safety tech, but much of it costs extra.
How safe is the BMW X5?
The NHTSA and the IIHS offer conflicting opinions. We wind up at a 7 out of 10 thanks to standard basic crash-avoidance tech and a Top Safety Pick score from the IIHS. But the NHTSA says this big SUV earns a somewhat uncommon four stars overall.
While automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and automatic high-beam headlights come standard, we’d pony up for the Driving Assistance Professional package for its adaptive cruise control system that allows for limited hands-free driving in certain situations. A surround-view camera system is also available; it’s a good idea since outward vision can be a bit tricky over the rear headrests and chunky roof pillars.
2023 BMW X5 Features
The 2023 BMW X5 is a proper luxury SUV, with a price to match.
BMW wants a minimum of $62,595 for a base X5. That’s a lot of money, but this big BMW comes well-equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen controlled by a center console knob, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a big sunroof, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and synthetic leather upholstery. All-wheel drive runs $2,300 more.
That standard fare accounts for a point above average, as does the big screen. We keep going with a point for a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with three years or 36,000 miles of maintenance included, and another point for a wide range of luxury options.
The X5 is a 9 on our scale.
Which BMW X5 should I buy?
The base 6-cylinder is a good buy for most shoppers, though drivers who commute within the xDrive45e model’s 31-mile all-electric range (or have the ability to charge at work) may find its $1,800 premium worthwhile.
To the base car, we’d add metallic paint, leather seats, the Premium Package (head-up display, a wireless charging pad, and access to more features), the Driving Assistance Professional Package (adaptive cruise control and other fatigue-reducing features), and perhaps a heated steering wheel and armrests. Such an X5 comes in at about $73,000 with all-wheel drive.
How much is a fully loaded BMW X5?
The X5 M comes in at $110,000 to start, including its 600-hp engine and a host of luxury and performance features that are optional on other trims. Still, BMW offers lots of customization—for a price. Swankier leather, adaptive cruise control, massaging seats, and the Competition package (a sport exhaust system, staggered 21- and 22-inch wheels, a firmer suspension, and 17 extra hp) will nudge the X5 M to the better part of $130,000.
2023 BMW X5 Fuel Economy
The 2023 BMW X5 is at its most efficient in plug-in hybrid form.
Is the BMW X5 good on gas?
Given its prodigious heft and impressive performance, the X5 isn’t really all that thirsty. Models with the 6-cylinder are most popular, so we use them to assign our 2 out of 10 score.
With rear-wheel drive, the base X5 checks in at 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined. All-wheel drive rates 21/25/23 mpg.
The X5 xDrive45e can make a lot of sense if your commute is under its 31-mile range on a full charge (or if you can charge it at work.) Left in hybrid mode, it’s rated at just 20 mpg combined, though.
The M50i, meanwhile, comes in at just 16/22/18 mpg, while the X5 M guzzles at a rate of 15 mpg combined.
