The 2024 BMW X6 sacrifices practicality to style, but comes standard with all-wheel drive.
What kind of car is the 2024 BMW X6? What does it compare to?
The 2024 BMW X6 is the coupe-like cousin of the X5 midsize luxury SUV. Its rounded roof and tapered rear accentuates its sportiness at the cost of roominess. Other German rivals offer similar SUV pairs in the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Porsche Cayenne.
Is the 2024 BMW X6 a good SUV?
Yes, though it prioritizes performance over practicality versus the related BMW X5. Standard with a mild-hybrid starter generator and now equipped with a friendlier user interface, the refreshed X6 earns a TCC Rating of 6.6 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new with the 2024 BMW X6?
The 2024 X6 arrives with the most thorough update since the third-generation model launched in 2020. Cockpit tech upgrades mark the most significant changes, but BMW polishes the ends and enhances the three powertrain options in its three models, xDrive40i, M60i, and X6 M Competition.
The 2024 X6 comes standard with all-wheel drive and an M Sport package that blows out the front end with a large octagonal lower grille grimacing below the classic kidney grille above it. New LED headlights integrate daytime running lights that double as turn indicators winking at the edges. The biggest differentiator between the X6 and X5 rides on the roofline and the rear. The X6 rounds into the raked tailgate like a fastback.
The interior marks the biggest changes for the 2024 X6. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen curve under a single pane of glass toward the driver. Most of the climate control buttons migrate into the touchscreen, and a light bar under the center vents accentuates the horizontal theme, highlighting the wood and aluminum trim. BMW ditches the gear lever for a push button selector.
The selector engages a revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that controls the start/stop function and cuts engine power while coasting. This new powertrain runs leaner and meaner, making 40 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque more than its predecessor, to 375 hp and as much as 398 lb-ft with the mild-hybrid engaged. Fuel economy increases 2 mpg to EPA ratings of 23 mpg city, 26 highway, 24 combined.
Every X6 uses a telepathic 8-speed automatic transmission that sends the power to all four wheels. An independent suspension with adaptive damping helps offset some of the X6’s prodigious weight, but ultimately it handles like an SUV because it is an SUV, albeit one that sits 2.2 inches lower than the X5.
The X6 M60i xDrive also employs a mild-hybrid with its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Output hits 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and it launches to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. That mild-hybrid powertrain migrates for the first time to the X6 M Competition.
It makes 617 hp on its way to a 3.7-second 0-60 mph time, and the variable V-8 exhaust coupled with a ride dialed to 11 on the firmness scale flips the chill-to-thrill ratio.
Cargo space and rear passenger space suffers from the fastback-like design. There’s 6.5 cubic feet less vertical space than the X5, and rear-seat passengers have 1.7 inches less rear legroom and 1.2 inches less headroom. Adults nearing 6 feet tall won’t fit comfortably in the back.
BMW equips the 2024 X6 with driver-assist technology such as automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, a driver attention monitor, and an automatic reverse parking that can back the SUV out of a tight spot without the driver in the vehicle. It may revisit its newfangled headlights to curry favor with the IIHS, which faulted the headlights in not earning a Top Safety Pick award.
How much does the 2024 BMW X6 cost?
The X6 costs about $3,500 more than the 2023 model, and at least $6,400 more than a similarly equipped X5 even with standard all-wheel drive. At $74,895 including a modest $995 destination fee, the X6 comes with a digital key, a 1-year satellite radio trial, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity as well as wireless smartphone charging, and an updated infotainment system with greater data processing. Standard comfort features include heated front sport seats covered in synthetic leather and a panoramic sunroof.
The V-8 in the X6 M60i xDrive boosts the price to $94,595 with its M Sport brakes, dynamic exhaust, and electronic rear differential, making for a happy performance medium between the base model and the $128,195 X6 M Competition.
Where is the 2024 BMW X6 made?
In Spartanburg, South Carolina, alongside the X5.
2024 BMW X6 Styling
The X6 rounds the roof of the boxier X5 for a look that hasn’t grown on us.
Most SUVs have a squared-off rear to optimize the “utility” part of SUV. BMW shaves the angle into a curve here, giving it a fastback SUV profile that’s oddly proportioned. It’s different enough to earn a point, but we’re more confident awarding a point to the clean and calm interior. It’s a 7.
The 2024 X6 comes standard with an M Sport package with a large octagonal lower grille grimacing below the classic kidney grille above it. New LED headlights integrate daytime running lights that double as turn indicators winking at the edges. Tall air intakes box the front ends, and the X6 dons more black trim pieces. At the rounded rear, slim taillights hug the ends and stop before the BMW roundel in the center of the tailgate, and rear vents bulge out the ends.
The X6 M has a more slender kidney grille, but with a larger lower grille and larger side air intakes to cool off the V-8. The biggest visual distinguisher are the staggered wheel sizes, with 21s up front and 22s in back, or the flashiest colors, such as Wildberry Metallic ($5,000).
Inside, a horizontal theme stretches across the dash with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen curving under a single pane of glass toward the driver. Most of the climate control buttons migrate into the touchscreen, leaving only a tiny band of controls for the hazards, defrosters, and volume knob. Slim center vents sit in between the touchscreen and climate bar. A controller dial and drive mode buttons remain in the console, which now has a pushbutton gear selector instead of a lever. BMW balances natural textures such as wood and leather with aluminum accents for a calm, almost serene cabin.
2024 BMW X6 Performance
The 2024 BMW X6 hustles like an all-pro linebacker.
Every BMW X6 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission housing an electric motor that boosts output by 12 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque. It cuts any turbo lag off the line and the 48-volt mild-hybrid system cuts engine power while coasting in Eco mode to aid fuel economy. The powertrain routes power to all four wheels, and the adaptive suspension can be tuned from soft to stiff. From there, the three distinct models offer distinct performance, from spicy to sizzling. The performance and handling each it a point to a 7, while the BMW X6 M would earn another point for its blistering acceleration to an 8.
Is the BMW X6 4WD?
Yes, all-wheel drive all day.
How fast is the BMW X6?
Most X6 shoppers opt for the base X6 xDrive40 and its revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6. It makes 40 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque more than its predecessor, to 375 hp and as much as 398 lb-ft with the mild-hybrid engaged. It sprints to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, according to BMW, but if this daily commuter tempts you into becoming a daily sprinter, consider your tires: The X6 rides on 20-inch wheels with run-flat tires, though 21-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires and 22-inch wheels with performance tires are options. The 8-speed flicks effortlessly through low gears, and the only time you might want the paddle shifters is to downshift a few gears before a passing move to alert the turbocharger of what’s to come.
It’s quick enough to earn a point on our scale, and seems quicker when considering its hefty size of 5,002 pounds. It earns another point to a 7 total for offsetting some of that weight, but even with a near perfect weight distribution, a lower ride height than the X6, and a double wishbone front suspension and multilink rear with adaptive damping at all four corners, the X6 still has handling characteristics of an SUV. A deft SUV, but an SUV no less. The blistering 0-60 mph times of the M60i and X6 M Competition would earn another point to an 8, if rated separately.
Compared to the X5, the X6 rises 2.2 inches lower in height and has a ground clearance of 8.5 versus 8.7 inches. The M models sit 0.5 inch lower.
X6 M60i xDrive performance
The X6 M60i xDrive also employs a mild-hybrid with its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Output hits 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and it launches to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The M60i includes M Sport exhaust, rear differential, and brakes with blue calipers, as well as ventilated disc brakes to arrest its 5,300 pounds. Oof. This is the midsize BMW SUV that best manages comfort with giddy performance. Even with its mild electrification, it’s the antidote to EV performance, with a visceral V-8 and dynamic exhaust, and an electronic limited slip differential that instantly adjusts torque to the rear wheel with the most grip. That’s key on the lean that comes from so much weight being shoved around behind such a potent V-8. It’s also priced about $35,000 less than the X6 M Competition, so you can add the $2,200 Dynamic Handling Package for active roll bars front and rear to limit that body lean.
X6 M Competition performance
If you must have the best of what BMW offers in midsize SUV form, it's the X6 M Competition. The mild-hybrid powertrain migrates for the first time to the M Competition, and its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 rates at 617 hp and 553 lb-ft. It shakes off its 5,375 pounds for a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, but the chassis is tuned so stiff to balance all that weight that the rigid handling as well as the large staggered wheels (21 inches up front, 22 in rear) seems to soak up every single thing the road is putting down. You must love speed and must need an SUV to endure that compromise on the daily, but once engaged the X6 M stands for Marvel when it comes to mechanical wizardry. A car this big shouldn’t handle as well as the X6 M, thanks in part to its electronic limited slip rear differential and chassis stiffness.
With the M Driver’s Package, top speed increases from 155 to 177 mph. Speed is only as effective for performance as braking, so BMW fits the X6 M Competition with 6-piston calipers grabbing 15.6-inch rotors up front and single-piston calipers with 15.0-inch rotors at the rear.
2024 BMW X6 Comfort & Quality
The X6 nips and tucks utility out of the SUV form.
The 2024 BMW X6 separates itself from the related X5 with a lower ride height and a sloping roof that eats into rear headroom and cargo room alike. Like nearly every other BMW, the luxurious fit and finish earns it a point, as do supportive front sport seats. The 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space earns another point, but the cut in vertical space is significant compared to the 34.0 cubic feet of space in the boxier X5. It adds up to an 8.
Front occupants have it best in the X6 with 16-way power seats with enough adjustments to support a spectrum of body sizes, from the baller to the smaller. Those seats are heated and covered in synthetic leather upholstery, but real hides are tempting.
That comfort can be extended to the rear, but only for smaller passengers, and only for two passengers despite the three seat belts. There’s only 35.7 inches for rear legroom, cramped even for compact crossover standards, and 6-footers will need to slouch to fit their heads.
The middle seat is best served as a pass-through to the back, thanks to 40/20/40-split rear seats. Fold those down and cargo expands to 59.6 cubic feet behind the front, compared to 72.3 cubic feet in the X5.
2024 BMW X6 Safety
The X6 performs well in crash tests, but the IIHS throws shade on its headlights.
How safe is the BMW X6?
Safety data remains inconclusive for the X6. The NHTSA hasn’t tested it and likely won’t, while the IIHS found it earned top marks in its tests. But the newfangled headlights cast doubt in IIHS testing, resulting in a “Moderate” rating for inadequate high beams. It’s likely BMW will modify the headlights mid-year to pick up a Top Safety Pick.
In any case, BMW equips the 2024 X6 with standard driver-assist technology such as automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Consider the $800 Parking Assistance Package that has a gimmicky automatic reverse parking function that can back the SUV out of a tight spot without the driver in the vehicle. More importantly, it adds a surround-view camera system to help see past the significant rear blind spots. Adaptive cruise control costs $2,100 extra, but it includes the $2,550 Premium Package, so it’s really a $4,650 upgrade. On the M Competition, you get a break: it’s only $1,700 extra.
2024 BMW X6 Features
Plenty of optional packages remain even at the top end of the 2024 BMW X6.
BMW charges plenty for the 2024 X6 xDrive40i, but it comes with plenty, too. At $74,895 with destination, the refreshed X6 comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity as well as wireless smartphone charging, a digital key, and a 1-year satellite radio trial. Standard comfort features include heated front sport seats covered in synthetic leather and a panoramic sunroof.
The standard features, extensive options list, comprehensive infotainment system, and 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with 3 years of scheduled service all earn a point to a 9. It misses the perfect 10 for being far removed from a value.
Which BMW X6 should I buy?
It’s a question of performance. If that’s a secondary consideration, we’d steer you towards the 2024 X5 that’s $6,400 less. But since we drove you here, you probably want the added juice of the twin-turbo V-8 and better handling of the M60i xDrive. The M Sport brakes, exhaust, and rear differential boost the price to $94,595, but it also adds cooled front sport seats with power lumbar support, wood trim, Harman Kardon sound, and a head-up display.
In addition to the driver-assist packages mentioned above, options range from a $2,200 Dynamic Handling Package with an air suspension and active roll bars to a $1,000 Climate Comfort Package with heated armrests and a heated steering wheel. If you don’t blush at a six-figure X6, take them both.
How much is a fully loaded X6?
The 2024 X6 M Competition tops the line at $128,195. It has Merino leather, Alcantara headliner, adaptive cruise control, and the Climate Comfort Package, as well as enough options to scale to $150,000.
2024 BMW X6 Fuel Economy
For mpg, look to the BMW X5; for power, step to the 2024 X6.
Is the BMW X6 good on gas?
The mild-hybrid boosts power and efficiency, at least on the X6 xDrive40i and M60i. The EPA rates the xDrive40 at 23 mpg city, 26 highway, 24 combined, which is an improvement of 1 mpg over last year. That only counts as a 2 on our scale.
The M60i also earns 1 mpg more to 17/22/19 mpg, which is laudable for a 4.4-liter V-8. The X6 M Competition gets 13/18/15 mpg, but not how you’re gonna drive it.
