The 2024 BMW Z4 delivers on the open-air fun its sleek design suggests.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 BMW Z4? What does it compare to?
A two-seat roadster with a soft top, ready power, and agile moves, the Z4 delivers on the type of fun a sports car should. It takes on everything from the Mazda MX-5 Miata to the Porsche 718 Boxster to the Chevrolet Corvette.
Is the 2024 BMW Z4 a good car?
Stylish, quick, and dynamic, the Z4 is a great toy that can be driven every day. It gets a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 BMW Z4?
The 2024 Z4 was originally scheduled to offer a manual transmission with its turbo-6 engine, but that’s been delayed until the 2025 model year. With that, the 2024 Z4 stands pat.
While it shares its platform and engines with the Toyota Supra, the Z4 looks quite different. It’s more reserved but still low, wide, and muscular. Its nose sports a wisely restrained version of the signature BMW grille, and the two occupants can drive either top down or covered by a power soft top that takes only 10 seconds to operate.
Inside, the Z4 comes standard with sport seats, a digital instrument cluster, and a large screen angled toward the driver and controlled by a rotary dial. It’s a mix of sporty elements and high-quality materials that fit with the car’s market positioning. Cargo space is minimal.
BMW offers a pair of engines, starting with a 255-hp turbo-4 and moving up to a 382-hp turbo-6. Both offer quick acceleration, and both are backed by an almost telepathic 8-speed automatic transmission. Standard paddle shifters will have to do until the manual becomes available. Fuel economy is decent, with at least 25 mpg combined for both engines.
The rear-wheel-drive Z4 is naturally athletic with its base suspension, with fairly flat handling and waterbug agility, though little steering feedback. An M Sport suspension is optional for the base model and standard on the top model. It adds firmer suspension tuning, a locking rear differential, and adaptive dampers that combine to create even quicker moves and more traction. It doesn’t quite rise to the level of a track car, though, but a true M model would.
Notable standard safety features are limited to low-speed automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams, but buyers can also get adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warnings, blind-spot monitors with steering support, and automatic park assist.
How much does the 2024 BMW Z4 cost?
The Z4 is offered in sDrive30i and M40i models. Priced at $54,595, the sDrive30i comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, two power-adjustable seats, a 10.3-inch infotainment screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Z4 M40i starts at $67,295. In addition to more power, it has the performance equipment listed above as well as bigger brakes and a body aero kit.
Where is the 2024 BMW Z4 made?
Graz, Austria.
2024 BMW Z4 Styling
Low and sleek, the Z4 looks like it means business.
Is the BMW Z4 a good-looking car?
Quite. We rate it an 8 here, adding two points for its low, wide, muscular exterior and another for its simple and purposeful cockpit.
The Z4 has a planted look thanks to low ground clearance, a wide stance, and staggered-size wheels and tires pushed to the corners. It’s also tastefully detailed, with one of the few remaining restrained versions of the BMW twin-kidney grille, prominent air intakes at the edges of the face, air vents behind the front wheels, and subtle cutlines along the sides that team with a built-in rear spoiler to lend the car a bit of a rake. It’s bold and purposeful rather than cute like the original Z3, which morphed over time into the Z4.
Inside, BMW emphasizes the driver with a 10.3-inch center screen that cants toward the steering wheel within a trapezoidal design. The driver gets a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that offers a lot of information. It’s a step down into a snug environment with sport seats that support drivers well. However, it’s also luxurious thanks to a vinyl-covered dash, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and typical BMW quality materials. The look comes alive with the available Cognac or Magma Red upholstery, but all versions get contrast stitching to add a little visual flair.
2024 BMW Z4 Performance
The Z4 begs for a Sunday afternoon and a winding road.
The Z4 earns a point for its willing acceleration and two points for its sharp moves for a total of 8 here.
Is the BMW Z4 4WD?
No, the Z4 only drives the rear wheels.
How fast is the BMW Z4?
It’s quick or quicker, and every Z4 provides the fun handling to match its top-down, sports car mission.
The 2.0-liter turbo-4 in the sDrive30i makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to provide strong, smooth acceleration in a car that weighs a minimum of 3,880 pounds. The 0-60 mph sprint flashes by in a mere 5.2 seconds.
The 3.0-liter turbo-6 in the M40i model is downright robust. It spins up 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, which cuts the 0-60 mph time to 3.9 seconds. It also sounds a lusty growl when drivers dig into the throttle. Both engines are aided by an 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts quickly and responsively.
On a twisty road, the Z4 exudes poise, balance, and agility, and yet the ride quality is forgiving—much like the BMWs buyers loved a decade or more ago. The sDrive30i is fun in its own right, but it’s more fun with the M Sport suspension, bigger brakes, and limited-speed differential of the Dynamic Handling Package (which is standard on the M40i). The package’s adaptive dampers firm up for sharper moves without destroying the ride quality, and the rear differential enhances the already tenacious traction. Our only complaint is a familiar one nowadays for BMW. The steering is quick and direct, but it’s a little too light and lacks much road feel.
2024 BMW Z4 Comfort & Quality
The Z4 only fits two but surrounds them with high-quality materials.
Great seats and exemplary fit and finish earn two points here, but the Z4 loses two points for its small trunk and lack of rear seat. That equals a 5.
Well-bolstered sport seats provide a good balance of room for bigger occupants and support through tight corners. They have power adjustments and lots of range of motion to make just about anyone comfortable. There are only two of them, though, so pick a friend and go for a fun drive.
You won’t be able to take much with you. Cargo space is limited to just 9.9 cubic feet, but BMW provides a pass-through to fit longer items.
While the base upholstery is vinyl, leather is available for $1,250-$1,500. Excellent build quality, soft-touch surfaces where anyone may rest an arm, and high-quality materials provide an upscale environment.
The power fabric top also contributes to the quality feel. It can be raised or lowered in about 10 seconds, even while driving at up to 31 mph. It’s well insulated enough to block out road noise.
2024 BMW Z4 Safety
The Z4 has basic standard safety gear and has not been crash tested.
How safe is the BMW Z4?
That’s yet to be determined as it hasn’t been crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA. Without those scores we can’t give it a rating.
The Z4 gets only low-speed automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams standard. An option package includes blind-spot monitors with steering support, lane-departure warnings, and front and rear parking sensors, while automatic parking is available in another package and adaptive cruise control is offered separately.
2024 BMW Z4 Features
The Z4 comes with plenty of amenities and a good warranty.
The Z4 earns a 7 here due to its plentiful standard features and an outstanding warranty. That warranty covers the car for 4 years/50,000 miles, and includes free scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
The Z4 sDrive30i starts at $54,595, including a $995 destination charge. It comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable seats, a 10.3-inch infotainment screen, navigation, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 1 year of satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch alloy wheels, and white exterior paint.
Which BMW Z4 should I buy?
The more-powerful Z4 M40i starts at $67,295. It adds heated seats, a heated steering wheel, driver-seat memory, adaptive dampers, a limited-slip differential, a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, and a body aero kit.
How much is a fully loaded BMW Z4?
Notable options include leather upholstery, bigger M Sport brakes, wireless smartphone charging, remote start, ambient lighting, a head-up display, and Harman Kardon audio. All colors other than white run $650, except Frozen Grey Metallic matte paint, which costs $3,600. Load up a Z4 and it can top $75,000.
2024 BMW Z4 Fuel Economy
The Z4 goes fairly easy on gas.
Is the BMW Z4 good on gas?
The Z4 isn’t hard on gas with either its turbo-4 or turbo-6 engine. The turbo-4 gets EPA ratings of 25 mpg city, 33 highway, 28 combined, and the turbo-6 is rated at 23/31/26 mpg. Both qualify as a 3 here.
BMW recommends premium fuel for both engines.
