  • Highs Outstanding V-6 and V-8 engine options, superb driving dynamics, loads of standard tech features.
  • Lows Unsatisfying base four-cylinder engine, tiny back seat, dearth of storage space.
  • Verdict The Camaro's exceptional handling characteristics and choice of powerful engines make it a first-rate driver's car.

Overview

The Chevrolet Camaro is first and foremost a driver’s car. A phenomenal chassis and fantastic powertrains enable it to perform with cars more than twice its price—which is the reason it scored a spot on our annual 10Best Cars list. Available as a coupe or a convertible, the Camaro comes with the choice of a thrifty turbocharged inline-four, a stout V-6, or the vaunted small-block V-8. All three can be had with either a standard six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic transmission. A cramped cabin and tunnel-like outward visibility make the Camaro more difficult to live with than the Ford Mustang or the Dodge Challenger. But when it comes to going fast and having fun, the Camaro is second to none.

What's New for 2017?

For 2017, there's a special Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition featuring a uniquely styled grille, exterior stripes, colored brake calipers, and distinct interior touches. A new Redline Edition adds black-and-red emblems and accents. Enthusiasts will applaud the return of the 1LE performance package on V-6 and V-8 models, which includes aggressive suspension tuning, bigger front brakes, fatter tires, and an electronic limited-slip differential (V-8 only). The paint palette also adds Arctic Blue Metallic and Krypton Green.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Camaro is available with three engines—two of which are outstanding. Unfortunately, the Camaro’s entry-level turbocharged inline-four is less exhilarating than the two other two options. The 2.0-liter 275-hp four isn’t slow, but its dull demeanor produces uneven throttle responses and unpleasant sounds that forsake sportiness. Upgrading to the 3.6-liter 335-hp naturally aspirated V-6 completely changes the car’s character, adding plenty of guts and a distinctly searing soundtrack. Chevy’s iconic small-block 6.2-liter V-8, which puts out 455 horsepower, delivers satisfying power and pulse-pounding sounds. Paired with the track-focused 1LE performance package, the V-6 and V-8 versions transcend their class, competing with cars costing much, much more. The standard six-speed manual transmission maintains the enthusiast spirit, and the eight-speed automatic snaps off quick shifts. The Camaro’s solid structure engenders precise handling and a quality feel that provides a car-and-driver connection unparalleled among pony cars. It’s sufficiently taut on the track yet pleasantly relaxed on regular roads.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Camaro's interior features quality materials and a modern look. Its comfortable front seats and straightforward layout are high points, but its torturously small back seat and compromised visibility inhibit livability. The available Recaro front buckets improve support for hard cornering without being too restrictive. The Camaro’s dashboard design is clean, and the driver has a gauge cluster with an available 8.0-inch configurable display. While the screen and analog gauges are easy to read, the large housing looks bulky. The Camaro outshines its rivals on the track and in the fun-to-drive department but is outmatched in terms of cargo space and storage. It holds less carry-on luggage and has even less interior storage than its already stingy competitors.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Camaro has a version of the wonderful Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, unlike some rivals that feature outdated non-touch displays. Chevy’s unit has it all standard—a 7.0-inch touchscreen, intuitive controls, attractive menus, responsive feedback, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is also available, as are navigation, a premium Bose audio system, and wireless charging.
