  • Highs Highly configurable, available powerful diesel engine, excellent hauling and towing capability.
  • Lows Disappointing base engine, poor interior quality even on top trim, few advanced safety features.
  • Verdict The 2018 GMC Canyon is a versatile mid-size pickup that offers superb carrying capacity and best-in-class towing with the optional turbodiesel engine.

Overview

The versatile mid-size Canyon comes with the choice of two cab and cargo-bed styles that pair with several powertrain choices, including General Motors’ exclusive diesel inline-four that’s fuel efficient and can tow up to 7700 pounds. The top-of-the-line Denali model dresses up the truck with chrome cladding, bigger wheels, and better interior materials. The Canyon's infotainment system is excellent, but unfortunately the pickup is shortchanged by minimal active safety options. Regardless, the highly skilled Canyon slots near the top of its class—only the 10Best-winning Honda Ridgeline surpasses it.

What's New for 2018?

The Canyon receives minor changes for 2018. Newly available features include heated exterior mirrors and Active Tow, which helps the driver align the pickup when hooking up a trailer. A new Black Out Exterior Trim group is included with the Nightfall package. Leather-appointed front seating is now available. Satin Steel Metallic and Marine Blue Metallic join the paint-color palette.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Canyon’s available 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine will pull a class-leading 7700 pounds by virtue of its 186 hp and impressive 369 lb-ft of torque. The turbodiesel is surprisingly polished, but it's not cheap. Between the two gasoline-powered engines, we'd steer clear of the unsatisfying base 2.5-liter inline four. A better choice is the optional 3.6-liter V6 that puts out a healthy 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. The V-6 can haul more than most rivals and outrun most of them in a stoplight drag race. The Canyon can corner as well as any competitor, and its handling is composed, capable, and more agile than that of full-size trucks. The Canyon’s ride quality doesn’t transcend its class, but it successfully toes the line between soft and firm damping.

    Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Canyon’s interior design is high on function and low on flash. It features an upright instrument panel layout and controls that are easy to reach and read. But even in the top Denali trim, it has some cheap plastic materials and never feels like a premium environment. The Canyon has the most cargo-bed volume and significantly more space for small items than its rivals. The deep center-console bin, multiple door pockets, and various cubbies throughout the cabin provide refuge for an assortment of loose items.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The Canyon’s available IntelliLink infotainment system is the most responsive in its class. Features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as user-friendly controls, make for a gratifying experience. Base models come with a non-touchscreen 4.2-inch color display. SLE and above trims have a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen; navigation is optional on all trims except the Denali, where it’s standard. The Denali also comes with an exclusive wireless charging pad and a premium Bose audio system.
