The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado delivers daily-driver utility with impressive towing and off-road capability, so long as you select the right options.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Colorado is a midsize pickup. Shop it against the closely related but pricier GMC Canyon plus the just-revamped Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.
Is the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado a good truck?
Powerful, well equipped, and boasting plenty of tech, the 2024 Colorado makes a strong case for itself among midsize pickup trucks. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado?
A new ZR2 Bison version tops the lineup with an even higher-riding suspension and hefty 35-inch tires. Otherwise, the lineup carries over after its redesign last year. Last year’s standard 8.0-inch instrument cluster has also been shelved in favor of an 11.0-inch display that was previously exclusive to the ZR2.
Available in a single crew-cab body with a 5-foot-2 bed, the Colorado wears busy lines with plenty of matte-black cladding on base and Trail Boss trims. Other models sub in painted trim, but don’t look for much chrome. The Colorado ZR2 looks like the full-size Tonka truck that it is with its tall stance and chunky tires, while the Bison version swaps in steel bumpers from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV).
The modern interior is awash in black plastic, but it’s hardly short on tech. The well-integrated 11.3-inch touchscreen sits above physical controls for climate and seat heating/cooling, when so equipped.
Underhood, the 2.7-liter turbo-4 is available in two states of tune, capable of lugging 3,500 to 7,700 pounds depending on the setup. A 310-hp, 430 lb-ft version comes on the ZR2 and can be had on other models.
On all, an 8-speed automatic transmission shuffles power to the rear or, in most trucks, all four wheels. Curiously, the WT and LT trim levels have a single-speed transfer case. Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 trucks swap in a low range. All models have convenient automatic all-wheel drive suitable for use on any terrain.
The Colorado has a well-controlled ride in any form, though we’ve yet to get behind the wheel of the ZR2 Bison. But with big 35-inch tires and Multimatic dampers, it is likely to swallow up pavement and rocks with confidence.
Standard crash-avoidance fare includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high beams, while adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and a surround-view camera system are widely available. A four-star overall rating from the NHTSA is a surprising blemish. The IIHS has yet to crash the Colorado.
How much does the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado cost?
Chevy prices the 2024 Colorado from about $31,000 for the base WT truck. Add four-wheel drive and that price climbs by $3,300. Base fare includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloth seats, and steel wheels.
Figure around $45,000 for a well-equipped mid-level Colorado LT with four-wheel drive and niceties such as power seats, adaptive cruise control, and synthetic leather upholstery.
The range tops out north of $50,000 for a loaded ZR2.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Styling
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado wears scaled-down full-size truck styling.
Is the Chevrolet Colorado a good-looking truck?
It breaks little new ground, but the 2024 Colorado nonetheless appeals with its clean lines and tall, purposeful stance. It’s a 6 thanks mostly to its suave interior.
The plastic-heavy front end can either come unpainted (WT and Trail Boss) or matched to the rest of the body. High-mounted headlights give way to blistered fenders, which are flared in ZR2 versions. Even the 5-foot-2 bed—the only bed available—is interesting, with complex taillights, an integrated step, and a stamped tail with an available (if somewhat flimsy) storage bin.
Trail Boss versions sit about 1.6 inches higher than other versions and they come with knobby tires. Z71 models blend a bit of additional off-road ability with city-slicker styling. The ZR2, meanwhile, looks right out of an aftermarket catalog, especially cloaked in this year’s new AEV trim. That model has unique front-end styling with a steel lower bumper designed for a winch. A steel rear bumper fitted at the rear completes the look. Its 35-inch tires mean business, to say the least. They’re less than two feet shorter than a Chevy Malibu.
The Colorado has a refined look inside, with nice integration of the big 11.3-inch touchscreen at the center of the dash. Turbine-style air vents give off a sporty flair. Chevy doesn’t offer many interior hues, though, so you’d better be happy with some version of black. Cloth comes standard, with synthetic and real leather seats on the options list. The black headliner makes this relatively tight cabin feel even more cramped, though.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Performance
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado is a sprightly midsize pickup.
Chevrolet offers two versions of its 2.7-liter turbo-4 in its smallest pickup. Pick wisely and you’ll have a truck with good power and towing ability. It’s a 6 on our scale thanks to its overall suite of abilities.
Is the Chevrolet Colorado 4WD?
Most versions are. Rear-wheel drive comes standard in base WT and LT models, which can be had with a single-speed transfer case containing a dry road suitable automatic four-wheel-drive mode.
Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 models add low-range gearing for better rock-crawling and mud-plugging. The Trail Boss version features a 1.6-inch lift from the factory compared to WT, LT, and Z71 trims. The Z71 model lacks the high-riding suspension, but it’s still plenty capable, especially with its limited-slip rear differential.
The ZR2, meanwhile, is its own beast. It sits 10.7 inches off the ground and features Multimatic spool-valve shocks at all four corners plus locking differentials. ZR2 versions also add a Baja mode for high-speed off-road driving; other versions have Terrain and Off-Road drive modes plus hill-descent control.
This year’s new Bison is the undisputed champ of this lineup, with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon-rivaling suite of features including 35-inch mud tires, boron steel skid plates, and steel bumpers. It sits more than a foot away from rocks below. Speaking of those rocks, the available surround-view camera system points one of its eyes downward—and it even features a trick washer to keep the view relatively unobstructed.
How fast is the Chevrolet Colorado?
It’s useful enough with the standard 2.7-liter turbo-4 rated at 237 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which can scoot to 60 mph in the eight-second range per our estimates. That engine is restricted to just 3,500 pounds of towing capacity, however.
The step-up 310-hp tune pushes 430 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, for a 6.8-second run to 60 mph. It comes on the ZR2 and can be added to other trim levels by Chevy dealers. Either way, these trucks top out at 7,700 pounds of towing capacity, though high-riding ZR2s are rated a bit lower. Payload capacity varies by trim but tops out at 1,684 pounds.
The 8-speed automatic transmission fires off quick, predictable shifts. It’s not overly eager to upshift for fuel economy, something that should be quite obvious given this truck’s mediocre ratings using the EPA’s test.
Light, direct steering makes the Colorado feel relatively nimble. It’s no sports car, but trim levels without a lift—WT, LT, and Z71—can handle curvy roads just fine. The Trail Boss trim has lots of body lean, which is quelled somewhat in the ZR2 thanks to its sophisticated shocks.
The ride is a bit busy without anything in the bed, but it’s better damped than some of its stiff rivals.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado brims with tech, but not interior space.
Available in just a single crew-cab/short-bed configuration, the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado is a step behind rivals from Toyota and Nissan. Still, its little bed is functional enough to earn it a 6 out of 10 on our scale.
The cabin has decent headroom and legroom up front, though seat bottoms limit long-distance comfort. Most versions have cloth or synthetic leather. Real hides are available in Z71 and ZR2 trims.
The rear seat is typical for a midsize truck—but that’s not a compliment. Limited leg room back there and narrow door openings mean less-than-compact SUV-level utility. The seatback is quite upright, too. Storage beneath the rear-seat bench is useful, though.
Interior trim hardly impresses in base WT configuration, with plenty of black plastic to go around. Z71 and ZR2 versions swap in hints of soft-touch surfaces, which dress things up a bit.
The 5-foot-2 bed includes tie downs, stake pockets, and lights, and the available damped tailgate is easy to operate. There are lots of trick touches here, like twin tire grooves in the front bed wall for motorcycles and a somewhat flimsy lockable storage unit in the tailgate. Chevy offers drop-in and spray-on bed lining options.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Safety
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado offers a good array of crash-avoidance features, but its NHTSA rating is a concern.
How safe is the Chevrolet Colorado?
The NHTSA rates the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado at four stars overall, which is a bit of a surprise for a new model. That demerit is offset by standard automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, and active lane control, plus widely available blind-spot monitors with steering assist, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alerts and braking, a surround-view camera system, and adaptive cruise control. GM’s trick Super Cruise system is not available on the Colorado.
The IIHS has yet to rate this truck, so we hold off on assigning a score here.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Features
Chevrolet offers a broad range of 2024 Colorado trim levels and configurations.
The 2024 Chevy Colorado comes pretty well-equipped in any form, and a wide range of optional extras combine with a terrific infotainment system to net an 8 out of 10 on our scale.
The lineup starts around $31,000 for a base WT when 2024 model-year pricing is confirmed. Add $3,300 for four-wheel drive. That money buys a crew-cab body, cloth seats with manual adjustment up front, an 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google Built-In tech, an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster (up three inches from last year), and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is typical for a mainstream brand.
The Colorado’s Google Built-In works really well. Simply press a voice button on the steering wheel and say “Hey Google,” followed by a command, and it works about like a smartphone. Its Google Maps (which require a connected smartphone’s data signal) work with tablet-grade ease.
Which Chevrolet Colorado should I buy?
The mid-level LT that runs about $37,000 with four-wheel drive includes keyless access and starting, a locking tailgate, a front center console, more USB ports, alloy wheels, and carpeting, plus it’s the gateway to features such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a wireless charging pad, and heated front seats. Go easy on the options and Chevy will build you a pretty well-equipped model for around $42,000, but beware that the automaker charges extra for a trailer hitch and bed protection.
Those wanting to go off-road will either need to step up to the Trail Boss, which is outfitted about like an LT but with a 1.6-inch lift, or the slightly tonier Z71 with its LED headlights, 18-inch wheels wearing all-terrain tires, and cloth/synthetic leather seats. The Trail Boss runs about $38,500, while the cheapest Z71 is $41,795. Both of those models also have a 2-speed transfer case and a limited-slip rear differential.
How much is a fully loaded Chevrolet Colorado?
At around $48,500, the ZR2 is a serious off-roader with a 2.8-inch suspension lift, Multimatic dampers, a frame stiffener, additional skid plates and rocker protection, and a bevy of comfort features. Expect the new ZR2 Bison to go for considerably more.
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado’s turbo-4 is no fuel miser.
Is the Chevrolet Colorado good on gas?
Not really. The standard 2.7-liter turbo-4 is rated as high as 20 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined with rear-wheel drive. Base four-wheel-drive versions check in at 19/23/21 mpg, either of which is enough to secure a 2 on the TCC scale.
Pour on more power and the Colorado will ask for more fuel. High-output versions are rated as low as 19 mpg combined. The new ZR2 Bison may be even lower thanks to its hefty stance and extra steel.
