features & specs
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is the only battery-electric car that competes straight-across on range and price with the Tesla Model Y. It’s an important new EV—and it’s good.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is an all-electric compact crossover SUV. Competitors include the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, the Nissan Ariya, the Tesla Model Y, and the Volkswagen ID.4.
Is the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV a good SUV?
The electric Equinox offers high range at approachable prices, using GM’s high-volume Ultium platform. EPA estimates the range at 319 miles with front-wheel drive, 285 miles with optional all-wheel drive. The versions now on sale start at $43,295 (including a mandatory delivery fee of $1,395)—$1,700 cheaper than a Tesla Model Y with the same range. We were impressed by our first drive in May; we liked the design, controls, and driving feel. We expect the Equinox EV to appeal to shoppers who want a “normal” EV. Our TCC Rating is 7.8 out of 10, though that may change if we get safety ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV?
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is an entirely new vehicle that shares little more than a name with the gasoline Equinox. It’s larger than most electric compact crossovers and it’s one of several vehicles that use GM’s Ultium electric-vehicle platform.
The Equinox EV is handsome, with less exaggerated accent lines than its big-brother Blazer EV. Every Equinox EV uses an 85-kilowatt-hour battery, sending current to either a 213-hp motor powering the front wheels or an all-wheel-drive system that adds a second motor at the rear, rated at a total of 288 hp. Rated ranges are 319 miles for FWD, 285 miles for AWD.
The inside is spacious front and rear, and the controls are “normal,” with knobs and switches for commonly used functions. It’s a heavy vehicle with a long wheelbase for its segment, making it comfortable and predictable on the road. Performance is good, but not explosive, using battery energy carefully to maximize range. The Equinox EV hasn’t yet been tested for safety by either the IIHS or NHTSA.
How much does the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV cost?
Equinox EV versions available in Spring 2024 start at $43,295 for the 2LT trim (including a mandatory $1,395 delivery fee). The top-trim 3RS version starts at $46,795. All-wheel drive adds $3,400. The RS trim is an appearance package for $1,500. Optional Super Cruise hands-free cruise control will appeal to road warriors. All versions are eligible for the $7,500 point-of-sale purchase rebate. An entry-level trim starting at $34,995 is promised “later” in 2024.
Where is the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV made?
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Styling
The Equinox EV as a solid, handsome effort from Chevy that downplays its electric powertrain.
The Equinox EV is handsome. It earns a point inside and out for a 7.
It has Chevy’s latest “brow” and bowtie badge up front, but no odd accent lines or unusual creases along the flanks. A thin, full-width light crosses the tailgate, which has a small but effective ducktail shape. All this presents as an up-to-date, modern small SUV—with less exaggerated lines than its big-brother Blazer EV—without any unusual features that denote the car’s electric powertrain. If you don’t notice the charge-port door on the left-front fender or the lack of a tailpipe, you might never know it’s an EV. We think that will appeal to shoppers considering their first EV.
Interiors are largely black and grey, but even on lower-end trims, accent trim in matte silver or blue liven up the cabin. The more expressive RS package has its own suite of upholstery and cabin materials, including seat piping, ‘RS’ insignia, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. A large 17.7-inch touchscreen display in the center of the dash on all models sits next to an 11.1-inch digital instrument cluster; their low, long shapes reinforce the width of the cabin. Two large eyeball vents mark the outboard ends of the dash; oddly, the two center vents are rectangular. Drivers don’t have to control everything via the touchscreen; they’ll find traditional knobs, switches, and stalks for functions like heating controls and turn signals.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Performance
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV isn’t a rocket ship, but it’s not trying to be.
Quick acceleration and a smooth, comfortable ride earn it a point each to a 7.
Behind the wheel, Equinox EV drivers will find the acceleration quick enough for most traffic situations. But unlike some electric cars, the power delivery is gradual: You need to press the pedal to get the extra oomph. AWD models feel somewhat quicker, though not startlingly so, and the two-motor system to provide “e-AWD” seemed to produce some torque steer that FWD version didn’t display.
The one-pedal driving in Chevrolets has always been good, and the electric Equinox is no exception. Regenerative is turned on via a permanent icon at the top of the touchscreen; it pops up a box labeled “One Pedal Driving” that’s set to the “Normal” level. Tapping the icon again turns off regen entirely, making the Equinox EV drive as if it had a conventional automatic transmission, meaning it glides rather than slowing to recharge the battery.
At roughly 1,600 pounds heavier than the gasoline Equinox, the electric SUV is comfortable, smooth, and predictable on the road—aided by a long wheelbase with the wheels at the corners. Its 38-foot turning circle is only average for the category. Our first road test took place in and around Detroit, which is flat and has very few curvy roads. The suspension is tuned for comfort, and roadholding was perfectly fine for any situation we put it through—but we’re eager to test the Equinox EV in more varied terrain.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox EV 4WD?
All-wheel drive is available as a $3,400 option on all versions of the Equinox EV presently on sale, via a second electric motor between the rear wheels.
How fast is the Chevrolet Equinox EV?
Chevy quotes an acceleration time of 8.0 seconds from 0 to 60 mph for the front-wheel-drive version of the Equinox EV, and 6.0 seconds with optional all-wheel drive.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV’s room and cargo features should appeal to mainstream buyers seeking a nice, sensible electric crossover SUV.
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV has considerable space front and rear for a “compact” crossover SUV. Its rear-seat legroom matches that of some midsize SUVs, and the flat floor in front of rear-seat riders makes the center position more usable than most. Ample cargo room and rear legroom earns it a point each to a 7.
The driver has a good view of the road ahead from behind the wheel, as Chevy’s designers have beveled the hood downward. Like most SUVs these days, the rear three-quarter vision is limited by thick roof pillars. The cabin is pleasantly practical, with two cupholders, a slot for pens, and lots of other storage space in the center console, with plenty of space for all the other stuff passengers carry. We’re puzzled at the center console lid, which is side-hinged toward the driver, making it inconvenient for front passengers.
Unlike a few EV crossover competitors, the rear seat backs of the Equinox EV fold all but flat, meaning long flat cargo (Ikea boxes, anyone?) can be hauled around—just like any other SUV. Cargo volume is 26.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat, and the load bay totals 57.2 cu ft with the rear seat backs folded down. Our test Equinox EVs had no discernable rattles, squeaks, or other quality flaws.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Safety
The Chevrolet Equinox EV hasn’t yet been crash-tested.
How safe is the Chevrolet Equinox EV?
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV hasn’t yet been crash-tested by either the IIHS or NHTSA, so we won’t assign it a safety rating until testing is complete.
Standard safety features provided in the Equinox EV include (but are not limited to) automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic reverse and rear cross-traffic braking, active lane control, automatic high beam headlights, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. The rearview camera is needed to compensate for limited rear three-quarter vision.
GM’s well-reviewed Super Cruise hands-free cruise control system is an option on every trim level of the Equinox EV at launch. More than 400,000 miles of U.S. and Canadian roads have already been mapped, allowing hands-free operation. But like all such systems, the driver must remain ready to take the controls back at any time—with an eyeball camera on the steering column to monitor attentiveness.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Features
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is the brand’s least expensive EV.
At launch, the Equinox EV comes in standard LT or flashier RS trims. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. Each of the two trims has a “2” level and a “3” level, with more features on the higher number.
A base 1LT trim will arrive sometime this year, Chevy says, at a starting price of $35,000 before incentives; that entry model deletes the power adjustment and heating for the driver’s seat, roof rails, front LED light bar, powered tailgate, and other features that are standard on 2LT and higher versions.
Every Equinox EV comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats and steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and a rear-window wiper. The large 17.7-inch central touchscreen has large icons and a small button on top that mutes the audio volume with a single tap, and turns off the screen altogether with a second tap. The standard feature set, range of options, and relative value all earn a point, but Chevy misses a point for its basic 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and we can’t give it’s otherwise robust infotainment system a point because it lacks smartphone pairing for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Chevy provides Google Assistant in the dash, with better voice recognition than any automaker’s own effort. Navigation comes via Google Maps with integrated charging data. More than 50 common apps are now in the car’s Play Store, with more arriving each week, and we found the system easier to use than expected once we’d signed into each app through the car—a one-time annoyance. Bluetooth pairing is still provided to play music or other audio from a device, but users dedicated to Apple Maps are out of luck.
Another notable omission in the specs was wireless phone charging—at any trim level.
Which Chevy Equinox EV should I buy?
The front-wheel-drive 2LT version we tested represents a good value, with a price well under $40,000 after the point-of-purchase incentive. All-wheel drive is a pricey option, at $3,400. The RS trim swaps in 21-inch wheels with lower-profile tires, a flat-bottom steering wheel, a black-painted roof, and various trim and appearance accents. But we’d be tempted to add GM’s excellent Super Cruise hands-free cruise control for highway travel. If you add the hardware, it comes with a three-year free trial period, and costs $25 a month thereafter.
How much is a fully loaded Chevy Equinox EV?
The higher-line 3LT version adds dual-zone climate control, power adjustment for the front passenger seat, ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, heated parking for the windshield wipers (useful for those in icy climates). The 3LT also gets 21-inch alloy wheels, though we always suggest smaller wheels may deliver a more comfortable ride and perhaps extend EV range slightly. The 3RS adds the same appearance upgrades as the 2RS. Adding all-wheel drive, Super Cruise hands-free cruise control, and a panoramic sunroof to a top-trim Equinox EV 3RS will likely push it over $50,000.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Fuel Economy
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is mid-range on energy efficiency, but has a high 319-mile range.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox EV good on energy?
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is rated at the equivalent of 108 mpg. That’s in the middle of the pack among its competitors, which range from the Nissan Ariya Venture Plus FWD at 103 MPGe to the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD at 117 MPGe. In electric terms, it goes 3.2 miles per kwh.
A top range of 319 miles shadows the Model Y’s 320 miles. Adding AWD to the Equinox will cut that to 285 miles, but we’re not convinced buyers care about EV powertrain efficiency. It’s the range, stupid.
Every Equinox EV has an onboard charger rated at 11.5 kw, meaning up to 36 miles of range per charging hour can be added. DC fast charging up to 150 kw comes via a CCS port, though the NACS port may appear in subsequent model years. Chevy quotes the ability to add “approximately 77 miles of range in 10 minutes,” but properly notes the charge “varies” based on battery energy, charging-station power capability, ambient temperature, and other factors. The standard portable AC charging cord lives under the rear deck, which requires emptying the load bay to access it.
