The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox punches above its class in ride quality, but it needs a hybrid with more power.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox? What does it compare to?
The 2025 Equinox is a five-seat crossover that compares with vehicles such as the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.
Is the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox a good SUV?
The 2025 Chevy Equinox improves over the outgoing model with sharp design, lots of space, and good features earning it a 6.0 out of 10 on the TCC Scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox?
A companion to the Chevy Equinox EV in name only, the 2025 Equinox is redesigned with gas-only powertrains. (We cover the EV separately.) The lineup’s slimmed down and simplified to LT, RS, and Activ trim levels with front- or all-wheel drive.
Wider, but not longer, the latest Equinox is more butch with punched-out sheet metal and flared fenders. It looks like Chevy shrunk the Traverse, including the C-pillars’ shark-tooth look. Base LTs don’t look cheap, Activs feature plastic cladding and chunky all-terrain rubber with an optional white contrasting roof, while RS models go dark with optional black roofs, 19-inch wheels, and available 20s filling the wells.
Inside, the Equinox steps up its tech game with an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster and an 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Buttons and knobs remain for climate and audio controls. Soft touch materials cover the dashboard and most of the door panels. It’s nicer to the touch and more upscale in look and feel than the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.
A more exciting design gets tamped down by the powertrain, which is merely adequate. It matches a 175-hp 1.5-liter turbo-4 with either a CVT and front-wheel drive or an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive. Torque rises from 184 lb-ft in FWD versions to 203 lb-ft with AWD. The RS and Activ models have a set of drive modes, including Normal, Off-Road, and Snow, tapped via an oversized console-mounted knob.
The FWD model with the CVT drives best. It feels lighter, the continuously variable transmission keeps the small turbo-4 in the power band more of the time, and it can spin the front tires. The AWD model’s 8-speed automatic transmission is a bit lazy, while smooth, and causes the turbo-4 to get caught flat footed too often. Steering is nicely weighted at all speeds, though don’t expect much feedback through the wheel.
The suspension tuning among the best in its class. The simple passive dampers provide a quiet, controlled ride that is never sporty. Even over broken pavement or cobblestone roads the Equinox isn’t upset on its optional 20-inch wheels.
Front-drive models can tow up to 800 pounds; it’s 1,500 pounds with all-wheel drive.
With a marginal gain in wheelbase, the new Equinox quotes space for up to five people. It’s 2.5 inches wider than the outgoing model, and feels slightly more spacious than before. By the numbers, it sits on a 107.5-inch wheelbase, and is 183.2 inches long overall. Those figures make it about 1.5 inches longer in wheelbase and more than five inches longer overall than the next-smaller Chevy Trax crossover.
Four passengers will find good comfort in the Equinox. It has 40.9 inches of front and 39.9 inches of rear legroom, and 39.2 of front and 37.8 inches of rear headroom (with a sunroof). Synthetic leather is available on the base model and standard on others. The Equinox’s fold-down rear seatbacks turn its 29.8 cubic feet of cargo space into 63.5 cubic feet.
All versions come standard with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitors with steering assist. A rear camera mirror and a surround-view camera system can be fitted to all models.
How much does the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox cost?
The base Equinox costs $29,995 including $1,395 destination and comes with front-wheel drive; it’s $2,000 more for all-wheel drive. That includes standard power features, 17-inch wheels, remote start, heated front seats, 6-speaker audio, and the 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Options range from a power tailgate and 19-inch wheels to that rear camera mirror and surround-view camera system.
It’s $35,395 for the front-drive Equinox RS, which adds a power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, a power tailgate, 19-inch wheels, and wireless smartphone charging. Options include 20-inch wheels, cooled front seats, and heated rear seats. The Activ costs the same, and has nearly all the same features, with different wheels, tires, and color schemes.
All Equinox crossovers come with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and one free scheduled service visit at the one-year mark.
Where is the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox made?
In San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Styling
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox shrinks the Traverse’s look.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox a good-looking SUV?
We like its quasi-SUV exterior look and its above average interior enough that it earns a 7 on the TCC Rating scale.
Some 2.5 inches wider but no longer than the previous softly sculpted model, the renewed Equinox wears a fresh outfit on loan from the larger Traverse three-row SUV. A wide-gap mesh grille sits below a bright band of trim and the Chevy bowtie, flanked by slim LED daytime running lights. Boxy wheel arches give this Equinox a rugged upgrade in style, while the flag of body-color trim behind the rear doors interrupts a flow of glass in the same way Kia’s found effective, and attractive. The Y-shaped LED taillights cap both ends.
The Activ model downsizes to 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and gets its own front-end look with nostrils and a roof that can be painted white to contrast with blacked-out badges. The RS can get a black-painted roof to go with a smattering of high-gloss black trim, and 20-inch wheels hit its options list.
Inside, the Equinox sports a handsomely drawn dash filled with digital displays. There’s an 11.0-inch unit in front of the driver that renders the gauges, while an 11.3-inch touchscreen fits in the same trapezoidal frame, offering Google built-in services and, yes, still offering Apple CarPlay. It’s even wireless. Slim vents and climate controls finish off the center stack, while round vents flank the dash. It all looks similar to other recent Chevys and sits above the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Performance
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox is down on power and speed, but its ride quality sets the bar for the class.
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox has mediocre power, but its ride is smooth enough to set a bar others should reach for. It nets a 5 on the TCC scale.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox 4WD?
All three trims come standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is a $2,000 option throughout the lineup. AWD Equinoxes aren’t AWD all the time. A button on the left side of the dash engages the all-wheel-drive system. Once on the system will remain engaged even during a key cycle, but once off, the Equinox will be front-wheel drive, even if the wheels slip. Every Equinox has 7.2 inches of ground clearance regardless of trim and tire. That’s up from the outgoing Equinox’s 6.8 inches of ground clearance. This is no Subaru when the road ends despite having an Off-Road drive mode.
Drive modes, controlled by a laughably oversized dial on the center console, also include Normal and Snow. Off-Road mode relaxes the stability control system and allows for more lateral yaw. But this isn’t a rally car and no one’s going to be going sideways in the Equinox.
How fast is the Chevrolet Equinox?
Every Equinox has a 1.5-liter turbo-4 rated at 175 hp under its hood rated. Front-wheel drive models get a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while all-wheel-drive models net an 8-speed automatic transmission. The CVT FWD models only have 185 lb-ft of torque while the AWD 8-speed models have 203 lb-ft.
No Equinox is going to qualify as quick, but FWD models are peppier off the line as the power is more at the ready. It’s not hard to spin the front tires while going around a corner. From a stop, there’s a minor tug of torque steer. The AWD models feel heavier, and the 8-speed’s shifts are lazy in the name of smoothness and fuel economy; this translates to a lull in power partly caused by turbo lag. It’s easy to catch the turbo-4 flat footed and off boost with the 8-speed, especially around town.
The Equinox can tow up to 800 pounds in FWD form and 1,500 pounds with AWD. The towing package is a dealer-installed receiver and no extra cooling elements are added to the powertrain.
The Equinox’s ride is its best driving quality. It’s comfortable, composed, and isolating. Even the RS model on 20-inch wheels over cobblestone pavement is smooth and quiet. The ride might be the best in its class, and is head and shoulders above the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage in terms of refinement.
The steering is surprisingly well weighted with good on-center stability. No minor corrections are needed at highway speeds. The system doesn’t go too light at parking lot speeds. Asking for much feedback about what’s going on with the wheels is a request too far. There’s controlled body lean around corners and the soft-suspension that soaks up road imperfections with aplomb quickly puts things back in place. The Mazda CX-5 feels more athletic with less body roll and sharper steering than the Equinox.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Comfort & Quality
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox has a big interior with nice materials.
Good rear seat room, lots of cargo space, and materials that are a cut above the class earn the 2025 Chevy Equinox points, but the short seat bottoms are a demerit. It all washes out to net a 7 on the TCC scale.
The interior isn’t as flashy or upscale as the Mazda CX-5, but it’s not as basic and boring as the CR-V. The materials feel a lot nicer to the touch than one will find inside the Toyota RAV4.
Base models have manually adjustable seats, but RS and Activ models net the optional 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support. LTs have cloth seats that feel durable, while RS and Activ models get synthetic leather with suede inserts on the latter. No Equinox can be had with leather.
There’s plenty of space for four adults, though three across in back might be a little tight. The front seats are a tad narrow for wider occupants, and the outside seat bottom bolster rides higher than the inside bolster due to a plastic shroud it presses onto. The result is a slightly lopsided feeling if you pay attention. The front and rear seat bottoms are a little short, an issue we find in the Blazer as well.
Rear seat space is good with the ability for a 5-foot-10 adult to sit comfortably behind someone of the same build. The cargo hold can haul 29.8 cubic feet of goods with the second-row seat up and that space swells to 63.5 cubic feet of space. Both are generous measurements.
The Equinox is easy to see out of thanks to a low-set dashboard, large swaths of glass, and small blind spots.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Safety
The 2025 Chevy Equinox goes long on standard safety tech.
How safe is the Chevrolet Equinox?
Neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has crashed one into a wall yet.
But all Equinoxes come standard with front and rear automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams. A surround-view camera system is available.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Features
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox delivers a solid value.
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox offers a simple lineup. Base LT models with FWD cost $29,995, or $2,000 more for AWD. That money buys a nice vehicle to commute in with an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster, an 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power accessories, cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, remote start, and 17-inch alloy wheels. We rate it an 8 out of 10 on the TCC Rating scale thanks to solid standard features, value, and a good infotainment system.
Which Chevrolet Equinox should I buy?
The base LT is the one we’d buy, but we’d opt for the $2,200 Convenience Package II that includes a power driver seat and lumbar control, dual-zone automatic climate control, hands-free power tailgate and wireless smartphone charging.
How much is a fully loaded Chevrolet Equinox?
The Equinox RS and Activ run $36,395 with all-wheel drive. They add a black- or white-painted roof, 19-inch or 17-inch wheels respectively, synthetic leather heated and cooled seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Adding every option from a hands-free automatic tailgate and power-adjustable front passenger seat to the surround-view camera system and other niceties brings the price to $40,000. Even then, the Equinox is undercutting some rivals while delivering a stellar feature set.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Economy
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox has good enough fuel economy ratings.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox good on gas?
It’s not bad, but it’s not clear why there’s no hybrid version. We rate the range at 3 out of 10 regardless of drive wheels. The volume front-wheel-drive model checks in at 26 mpg city, 28 highway, and 27 combined in the EPA’s test. Opting for all-wheel drive moves those figures to 24/29/26 mpg.
