Capable, comfortable, and well-equipped, the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a strong choice among full-size pickup trucks.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500? What does it compare to?
The 2025 Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup truck. Compare it to the mechanically similar GMC Sierra 1500 as well as the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra.
Is the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a good truck?
The 2025 Silverado is a strong overall choice, even if it’s not the best overall full-size truck. It scores points for its big lineup, its approachable tech, and its hands-free Super Cruise option. It’s a 6.0 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
Very little, aside from the return of the '90s-era Riptide Blue paint color.
The Silverado 1500 comes in three cab configurations, all of which share the same basic styling treatment that starts with a busy and blocky front end and culminates in a conventional bed. Most trim levels have unique grille designs, which are universally flanked by boomerang-shaped headlights. From the side, the latest Silverado has a typical three-box look without the boxy wheel arches seen in the nearly identical GMC Sierra 1500.
Silverados have a pleasant look inside regardless of trim level, but it takes stepping up to the mid-level LT—or higher—to unlock the better dash with the big 13.4-inch touchscreen running the latest Google Built-in technology.
Silverado engine options start with the reasonably robust 310-hp 2.7-liter turbo-4 and work their way up through a traditional 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 to a snarling 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8. There’s also a costly but torquey turbodiesel that nudges the maximum towing capacity to 13,300 pounds. Fuel-economy estimates vary across the line, but none top 20 mpg combined.
While far from nimble, the Silverado 1500 has a good if sometimes bouncy ride. That’s especially impressive since its suspension is a relatively archaic setup with a solid rear axle and leaf springs, which stands in marked contrast to increasingly common coil or air springs. ZR2 trucks have beefier Multimatic shocks, but they’re hardly rough riders around town, either.
The Silverado 1500 is largely unrelated to the Silverado EV, which we cover separately. We also look at the beefier, more capable, and less-comfortable Silverado HD lineup in a separate review.
In popular crew-cab form, the 2025 Silverado’s cabin is on par with rivals in terms of stretch-out space. Nice materials are in line with admittedly hefty prices, while the top-end models should make most rational buyers consider whether the premium for a GMC Sierra is actually worth it.
Chevy offers its trick Super Cruise hands-off driving tech on some trims, and it helps make the Silverado a terrific road-trip vehicle so long as you don’t mind its fuel consumption.
These big trucks have mass on their side when it comes to crash tests, though the IIHS has issued a concerning “Marginal” score in one of its tests.
How much does the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cost?
You won’t get much Silverado 1500 for $40,000 or less, though such fleet-oriented trucks do exist. The base price for a Work Truck is $38,995, and a short-bed crew-cab configuration with four-wheel drive runs at least $45,000. You’ll need to budget $50,085 for a mid-level LT with the 13.4-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a few other niceties.
The Silverado ZR2 runs $71,995, and it’s not hard to build a Silverado 1500 to $80,000, so be careful with bloat.
Where is the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 made?
Chevy builds the Silverado 1500 in Flint, Michigan; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Silao, Mexico.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Styling
The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado’s quirky front end gives way to more conventional styling inside.
Is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a good-looking truck?
It won’t win any beauty pageants, but the Silverado gets a point above average for its unusual exterior and another for an interior that is particularly nice in higher trim levels. It’s a 7 on the TCC scale.
The Silverado lacks the tough-edged look of the GMC Sierra and the brash expression of the Ford F-150. Instead, Chevy wedged in a complex grille—whose detailing differs by trim level—and attached a quartet of quirky headlights.
Trim differences outside work their way in as you climb the lineup, but there are bigger differences inside. LT and higher trim levels have a rather nice 13.4-inch widescreen that’s integrated into a modern, convenient, and well-organized dash. It’s a delight, and we prefer it to the vertical displays found in some chief rivals. Models at the top of the lineup can feel like proper luxury trucks—as they should given how much they cost.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Performance
The 2025 Chevy Silverado 1500 is one refined hauler.
Chevrolet’s full-size pickup has a trucky ride that stands in contrast to more comfortable rivals. We give the lineup a 5 out of 10 with the point its powertrains would have gotten erased by its occasionally unsettled ride quality.
Is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD?
You’re likely to encounter many four-wheel-drive Silverados, though Chevy offers a two-wheel-drive version as well.
The ZR2 is the most off-roady of the bunch with its lifted suspension and Multimatic remote-reservoir shocks. It’s as capable as a big pickup likely needs to be, even if it lacks the gusto of a Ford F-150 Raptor.
How fast is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
The base 2.7-liter turbo-4 hustles 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque to the wheels through a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox, making it more than adequate for the way many people will use their trucks. It’s rated to tow as much as 10,000 pounds, too, though you’ll need to sort through options and configurations carefully to net this.
If you regularly tow heavy loads, though, the 5.3-liter V-8’s 355 hp and 383 lb-ft make it a better choice. The top 6.2-liter V-8 puts out a hearty 420 hp, making it an even more confident towing rig, but it’s just so thirsty.
The turbodiesel option intrigues with its 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. It’s rated to tow as much as 13,300 pounds, though realistically anyone who regularly tows that much should be looking at a Silverado HD.
Those three engines use a 10-speed automatic transmission, which offers rapid-fire downshifts but occasionally feels grumpy as it struggles to select gear ratios away from a stop.
Silverados ride on a traditional truck suspension that uses a solid rear axle with leaf springs. This tried-and-true setup simply doesn’t take bumps as well as the coil springs you’ll find in the Toyota Tundra and Ram 1500. Those models cope better with an unladen bed, too.
Interestingly, ZR2 versions actually ride a little better thanks in part to their massive tires with big sidewalls that absorb big and small road imperfections.
The Silverado is anything but nimble, too, but its steering is light enough and accurate enough to make parking fairly easy.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Comfort & Quality
The Silverado’s interior is massive and can be downright luxurious, for a price.
The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has a big cabin and it has a deeper-than-typical bed, points that earn it a 7 out of 10 on the TCC scale.
The Silverado 1500’s three bed choices—5-foot-10, 6-foot-7, or 8-foot-2—vary by cab selection, and all have tall sides. You’ll also find an integrated corner step plus the option to add bed liners, additional steps, LED lights, and power outlets.
The cabin can seat anywhere from three to six passengers, depending on whether you’ve selected a front bench seat and an extended- or crew-cab configuration. In all, the front seats are supportive and are generally power-adjustable, unless you pick one of the lowest trim levels. Rear-seat riders have tons of room in the crew cab, but precious little space in extended cabs.
Interior materials improve at nearly every step of the way as you work your way through Chevy’s myriad trim choices. Top High Country models should have any GMC Sierra Denali owner second-guessing their choice.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Safety
The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado can be equipped with impressive crash-avoidance tech, so long as you spring for a high-end model.
How safe is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
These big Chevy pickups have a pretty good overall crash-test record, but what really earns them points here is their available driver-assistance and crash-avoidance tech. Top-end models help them edge out an impressive 8 for safety.
Crash-test data isn't in for the 2025 Silverado 1500, but the 2024 data should carry over. The Silverado gets a point for a five-star rating from the NHTSA, plus another for standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high-beams. They add a third point above average for offering Super Cruise, parent company GM’s impressive hands-off driver-assist system that allows for exceptionally relaxed driving on hundreds of thousands of miles of pre-mapped roads.
Unfortunately, there are some downsides here. For one, Super Cruise is offered only on high-end Silverados, and even then it’s an expensive option. Chevy is a bit stingy about adaptive cruise control, too, so road warriors may wind up spending a lot more than they initially expected for the most highway-ready Silverado.
Additionally, the IIHS notes that the Silverado 1500 has a decidedly mixed crash-test record, including several “Marginal” and “Poor” ratings mixed in with the expected “Good” and “Acceptable” scores.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Features
Chevrolet offers a Silverado 1500 for everyone—or at least everyone with deep pockets.
Full-size pickup trucks aren’t cheap. The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado is rolling proof of this fact. It’s well-equipped for a work truck in base form, nicely outfitted as a family truck as an LT, and downright fancy by, you guessed it, truck standards as a High Country. But all of those statements come with the caveat that the Silverado is expensive.
It’s an 8 here thanks to good equipment in standard fare against its rivals, so many configurations, and some great tech, including its infotainment system. Chevy’s average 3-year/36,000-mile warranty earns it no points above average, though.
Base Work Truck versions have a vinyl-clad cabin and wash-out rubber mats, but even their 7.0-inch touchscreen gets the job done with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Which Chevrolet Silverado 1500 should I buy?
Save up for the Silverado LT. This truck costs $50,095 to start and runs upward of $55,000 in crew-cab 4x4 form, but, realistically, that’s the setup most shoppers want these days. Its biggest assets are its 13.4-inch touchscreen running Google Built-in, plus the fact that it’s the starting point for such niceties as leather upholstery, Bose speakers, and heated front seats.
You’ll likely want to budget at least $5,000 above that in optional extras, as few Silverado 1500s leave the factory without at least an add-on or two.
Figure $65,000 for one with adaptive cruise control, too.
What appeals to us the most about the LT is its 13.4-inch screen and Google tech. Sure, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are here, but the Built-in interface is so good—and offers access to so many apps—that it will likely render smartphone projection a thing of the past for many users. Submit your login to Google and your truck is now an extension of your device.
How much is a fully loaded Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
Buckle up. The Silverado 1500 can get downright pricey. The High Country runs $64,695 and the ZR2 costs $71,995, and that’s before you pay extra for fancy paint and other niceties. They have a different outlook on life, though, as the High Country has swanky leather and wood trim, while the ZR2 rides on bump-smashing off-roady bits.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Fuel Economy
The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado’s fuel economy isn’t its biggest selling point.
Is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 good on gas?
With nary a hybrid in sight, the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado lineup trails its biggest rivals when it comes to fuel economy. EPA fuel economy numbers for 2025 are not yet available, but the 2024 numbers should hold. Most versions check in well south of the vaunted 20 mpg combined mark on the EPA test.
The most popular version is the 5.3-liter V-8 with the crew-cab body, which for 2024 was estimated at just 16 mpg city, 20 highway, 17 combined. Even the 6.2-liter V-8 isn’t much worse. However, we have experienced the best real-world fuel economy with GM's V-8s versus those of other brands.
Those figures net the Silverado 1500 a lousy 1 on the TCC scale.
Turbodiesels rated as high as 26 mpg combined in rear-drive form for 2024, but the hefty upcharge for this engine option and the cost of diesel fuel may negate much of the savings. Even 2024 four-wheel-drive versions are estimated at an acceptable 21 to 24 mpg combined, depending on the trim level.
But 2024 gas-only models topped out at just 18/22/20 mpg for a rear-drive turbo-4, or 18/21/19 mpg for one with four-wheel drive.
