The 2025 Chevrolet Traverse’s crisp exterior styling gives way to a comfortable enough driving experience.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse? What does it compare to?
The 2025 Chevy Traverse is a three-row crossover SUV that compares well with the Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Kia Telluride.
Is the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse a good SUV?
The Traverse wears classy styling and it rides well. It’s a 6.4 out of 10 here. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse?
After a redesign last year, the Traverse adds a new High Country trim level that adds standard leather seats that are heated and cooled up front, Bose audio, and most of the features that are optional on other Traverse trims. It’s also fitted with the brand’s trick Super Cruise hands-off driving technology.
The latest Traverse has traditional SUV lines, and it looks more rugged in Z71 guise with its red tow hooks, skid plate, and unique grille treatment.
Inside, the Traverse has a big 17.7-inch touchscreen that dominates the dash above a thin sliver of climate vents and controls. The wide center console below has a wireless smartphone charging pad and some big cupholders. While the base Traverse is pretty bland inside, the RS trim adds red and black panels that have a carbon-fiber effect we find appealing.
Traverses are powered by a 328-hp 2.5-liter turbo-4 that needs to be wound up for best acceleration. The 8-speed automatic transmission does a reasonable job of ensuring that the shifts are smooth, quiet, and predictable. Optional all-wheel drive offers some all-weather traction, but it takes stepping up to the Z71 for its higher ground clearance and twin-clutch rear axle for better traction and a hint of off-road ability. Properly equipped, the 2025 Traverse is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Traverses are heavy vehicles that ride well, especially with smaller wheels. It gets firmer with the available 22-inchers, which are simply too big and lack the kind of sidewall needed to mash out the road below.
Figure 23 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, or 21 mpg combined with all-wheel drive.
The Traverse has a big cabin with decent space behind the third row, which can accommodate adults in a pinch. Front- and middle-row riders will find good room all around.
All Traverses have good crash-avoidance tech as standard, though the automaker’s Super Cruise system is generally restricted to higher-end trim levels. It’s worthwhile for anyone who plans to use their Traverse as a mile-eater.
How much does the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse cost?
Figure about $40,000 for a base Traverse LS, which is pretty well-equipped. It has a big 17.7-inch touchscreen, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and cloth seats that are heated up front.
We’d budget closer to $45,000 for the step-up LT with its dressier interior and power driver’s seat and tailgate, plus we figure most shoppers will option one up with easy-clean synthetic leather seats plus all-wheel drive.
Where is the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse made?
In Lansing, Michigan.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Styling
With chiseled good looks, the 2025 Chevy Traverse is a stylish crossover.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse a good-looking SUV?
It looks more like an SUV than a crossover. We like the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse’s exterior and interior enough to score it a 7 on the TCC scale.
the Traverse has a tall grille bookended by a complex arrangement of lights and intakes. From the side, the Traverse has some Tahoe-like bulk, albeit with a more crossover-esque triangle of a C-pillar behind the rear passenger compartment.
The Z71 has its own grille treatment plus a suspension with a wider track and a higher stance. It’s decidedly rugged, at least to behold.
The cabin has a well-organized appearance and an open feel. A curved wall of screens makes drivers feel like they’re in the vehicle’s nerve center, while a big 17.7-inch touchscreen rests over the vents and secondary climate controls. The big center console is full of space since the gear lever is now a stalk on the steering column.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Performance
The 2025 Chevrolet Traverse has a smooth ride quality, but it’s not that quick.
Chevy’s biggest crossover has an impressive ride quality, netting it a point above average. It’s a 6 on the TCC scale.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse 4WD?
All-wheel drive is optional for about $2,000. In Z71 guise, it’s a trick system with a twin-clutch rear end that can split power between each wheels. Drivers must turn on both the advanced and base systems.
How fast is the Chevrolet Traverse?
It’s adequate, though you really need to wring out this engine. The 2.5-liter turbo-4 is reasonably smooth as it churns out up to 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque, sent to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. While Chevy has trained the gearbox to shift up quickly to save fuel, it downshifts on command. But that’s part of the problem: all that power and too much of that torque is high in the rev band, so you’re constantly stabbing at the accelerator if you want to go anywhere quickly. Some of the blame also goes to a portly 4,500-pound-plus curb weight.
The Traverse has steering that responds quickly and a great ride quality, so long as you skip the available 22-inch alloy wheels. RS versions ride a bit more firmly and have more heft to their steering, but they’re not exactly nimble. No Traverse snakes its way through traffic particularly well, and these SUVs can have a ponderous feel as they’re slotted into parking spots.
The Traverse can bet outfitted to tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is decent for a crossover in this segment. If you really need to tow, though, look for something with a frame like Chevy’s own (admittedly pricier and thirstier) Tahoe.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Comfort & Quality
The 2025 Chevrolet Traverse has a spacious cabin.
The 2025 Chevy Traverse is roomy and comfortable inside, as we expect from a vehicle stretching nearly 205 inches between its bumpers and riding on a 121-inch wheelbase. It’s a 9 out of 10 for its comfortable front and rear seats, true five-adult utility, and big, flexible cargo area.
The Traverse is offered in seven- or eight-seat configurations, though the extra seat belt version with a second-row bench seat only comes on LS and select LT trims.
The front seats have good adjustments and support, though the cheapest Traverse has an inconvenient manually adjustable driver’s seat that seems a bit chintzy for the price.
Rear-seat riders have about 41.5 inches of legroom, which is quite good for the class. The wide rear doors don’t have the kind of pointy edge that stands ready to dent the car next to it, either.
Adults can squeeze into the third row, but they won’t be thrilled with the experience. The bench is wedged low to the ground, which creates an uncomfortable knees-up seating position. Headroom is decent, though, and rearmost passengers have cupholders and USB-C ports.
The cargo area expands from about 23 cubic feet of stuff-hauling space with the third row upright to about 57 cubes with its third-row folded. It maxes out at an impressive 97.6 cubic feet with rows two and three down, though the surface isn’t flat. There’s also a small storage area beneath the cargo floor.
All Traverse trim levels have decent materials inside, though the High Country doesn’t nudge real far into the luxury world given what should be a hefty price tag.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Safety
The 2025 Chevy Traverse offers the brand’s trick Super Cruise system.
How safe is the Chevrolet Traverse?
The 2025 Chevy Traverse lacks sufficient crash-test data to earn a score here. However, it comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitors, a surround-view camera system, a driver’s seat that buzzes to alert its occupants of potential dangers, and active lane control.
A rear camera mirror is available, as is Super Cruise. That tech lets drivers go hands-off on hundreds of thousands of miles of mapped highways and major roads. It’s an impressive system, which requires drivers to be looking forward and will alert them in advance of any situation where they might need to take over control again.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Features
The 2025 Chevrolet Traverse loads up on features.
Chevy packs a decent amount of stuff into the 2025 Traverse, though you’ll likely want to bypass the base LS trim level. Overall, we rate this range at 8 out of 10. It gets points for its big touchscreen and great Google built-in tech, plus an extra point for myriad options.
The range is likely to start just south of $40,000 for 2025, though we’ll update this space when we know more about the new model year.
The base LS includes cloth seats that are manually adjustable and heated up front, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 17.7-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and remote starting.
All-wheel drive is $2,000 more on trim levels where it’s not standard.
Which Chevrolet Traverse should I buy?
The LT costs about $2,500 more, and it’s worthwhile for its improved interior trim, power-adjustable driver’s seat, power tailgate, wireless device charging pad, and second row that can slide forward. It’s also available with second-row captain’s chairs, and it can be loaded up with useful synthetic leather (take that, spills!), a big sunroof, and Super Cruise.
The $48,000-or-so Z71 has all-wheel drive and a taller suspension, plus it is equipped with the trailer towing package. It and the LT can be loaded up with Bose speakers, automatic parking, and a rear camera mirror.
How much is a fully loaded Chevrolet Traverse?
While Chevy hasn’t priced the 2025 Traverse High Country as of press time, it’s likely to come in around $60,000. It has cooled front seats, ambient interior lighting, a power-folding third row, and Bose audio, plus pretty much every feature that’s optional on trims below it.
2025 Chevrolet Traverse Fuel Economy
The 2025 Chevrolet Traverse offers average fuel-economy estimates for the class.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse good on gas?
It’s fine. For the 2025 model year, the EPA test pegs it at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined with front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive takes a big hit to 19/24/21 mpg.
There’s no Traverse hybrid here, and that’s a shame. Toyota’s Grand Highlander Hybrid offers north of 30 mpg combined, which saves a lot of money at the pump.
