The 2024 Chevrolet Trax slips into the future without all-wheel drive, but with hints of a battery-powered future.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Chevrolet Trax?
The Trax revives a small-car nameplate and gives it slippery SUV-like styling cues, but it’s a front-drive hatchback with no available all-wheel drive.
What does it compare to?
It compares with vehicles like Chevy’s own Equinox and Trailblazer, as well as the Kia Soul and Seltos and the Hyundai Kona.
Is the 2024 Chevrolet Trax a good car?
The attractive Trax has an attractively simple lineup, good fuel-economy estimates, and a high degree of technology standard. We give it a 6.0 out of 10, without the safety ratings still to come. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Chevrolet Trax?
It’s an entirely new vehicle, much larger than the Chevy Trax sold prior to 2022. Based on the compact Trailblazer, the 2024 Trax has a longer wheelbase and is bigger overall—it’s nearly the equal in size of the Chevrolet Equinox crossover.
The Trax returns with an outfit that looks expensive and athletic like a track suit. Clearly in the spirit of the upcoming Equinox EV without cloning that electric SUV’s looks, the 2024 Trax brandishes a mesh grille across its nose, with a lattice texture that frames its small Chevy bowtie. LED headlights spin off from its LED running lights for an interesting lighting signature. Down the sides, the Trax strikes a strong Blazer note, with its two-pack and wasp waist and with the sweeping upturn of its shoulder line at the rear. Stickpin taillights cap the rear quarters, pointing back toward the Trax’s ample haunches. We wish more economy cars had this much verve—and it carries on inside, where the Trax mingles angled control pods with round air vents and a big touchscreen, knitting it all together well above its pay grade.
The bracing style doesn’t get the backup it needs from the powertrain, but what’s here is pleasant enough. The prosaic 137 hp that issues from the Trax’s 1.2-liter turbo-3 gets joined by 167 lb-ft of torque, all of which emerges from the business end of a 6-speed automatic to turn the front wheels, and the front wheels alone. This is no SUV; it’s a spacious front-drive hatchback, regardless of what the TV ads tell you—and it’s good at that, parsing out its economy-car power in careful amounts, never upsetting itself with rash responses to rough roads, and readily engaging with the driver’s steering inputs. It’s a capable city runner with no pretense of mucking things up off-road—and that’s refreshing.
The Trax has grown considerably in its new generation; it’s now bigger than the Trailblazer, and almost the size of the gas-powered Equinox. Interior space is ample for four 6-foot passengers and its well-shaped seats wear a durable fabric, though the driver could use more lumbar support. Cargo space shines, at 25.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 51.4 cubic feet when they’re flipped down.
Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash-tested the new Trax, but all versions have automatic high beams, active lane control, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitors and rear parking sensors are offered on all versions, and adaptive cruise control can be fitted to the more expensive models.
How much does the 2024 Chevrolet Trax cost?
The Trax comes in five trims: LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS and Activ. All have LED headlights and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as cloth upholstery and cruise control. The $21,495 Trax LS delivers that infotainment on an 8.0-inch touchscreen; the $23,195 Trax 1RS ups the ante with heated front seats and 18-inch wheels. We like the $23,395 Trax LT and its 11.0-inch touchscreen and remote start; hold on the spendy (it’s all relative) $24,995 Trax 2RS and its 19-inch wheels, and even the $24,995 Trax Activ with its monochrome look and power driver seat.
Where is the 2024 Chevrolet Trax made?
In South Korea.
2024 Chevrolet Trax Styling
If only more economy cars were this attractive.
We give the Trax two points above average for its sleek body and another for its well-designed interior, for an 8 here.
Is the Chevrolet Trax a good-looking car?
Handsomely styled, with a look that sits comfortably alongside Chevy’s upcoming Equinox EV without aping it, the 2024 Trax wears a mesh grille banded to its nose with a lattice that also hosts a small Chevy bowtie, and splits its LED headlights from thin pipes of LED running lights.
From the side the Trax hits strong RAV4 and Blazer notes, with at least a two-pack of sculpting at its sides. The swoop atop its rear fenders gets capped by pointy LED taillights that gesture back toward thick haunches.
Inside, the elements of other Chevy interiors—round air vents, angled pods with touchscreens and digital gauge clusters—knit together better than in any other application. On the RS trim, it wears thoughtful details like the red trim on its air vents and toggle switches, or the piping on the Activ’s seats—but we’re still a hard pass on the Activ’s ample black gloss trim, which glares from the dash and the center console, just itching to be scratched.
2024 Chevrolet Trax Performance
It’s not quick, but the Trax has an agile, user-friendly feel.
The Trax is far from the fastest vehicle in the Chevy lineup, but its performance feels fully baked and sure of what it is—inexpensive and cheery transportation that acts like a car and doesn’t need the flinty bona fides of an actual SUV.
How fast is the Chevrolet Trax?
It’s not quick. A 137-hp 1.2-liter turbo-3 with 162 lb-ft of torque slots into every Trax, coupled to a 6-speed automatic. Power goes to the front wheels. Chevy applies active noise cancellation to damp its drivetrain sounds, and it works: the turbo-3 emits a low growl when pressed hard, but it never overwhelms the cabin.
It doesn’t overwhelm the driver, either. We’d peg the Trax’s 0-60 mph times in the eight-second range. Not incredibly quick, the Trax is credibly quick enough to execute highway merges, on-ramps and passing. It’s perfectly capable for an economy car, and the turbo-3’s torque can at least be accessed at reasonably low engine speeds; peak torque arrives at 2,500 rpm.
What would transform it would be a battery pack instead of an engine, of course, but Chevy would not confirm or deny whether a Trax EV is in the works.
The Trax’s 6-speed automatic transmission hinders it, but not in any objectionable way at this price point. With no manual transmission available, it would be better if the Trax had some paddle-controlled manual-shift mode or if even the existing manual gear toggle (mounted on the transmission lever) could be accessed outside of Low gear. It can’t, and the Trax sometimes fumbles the plays called by the driver by holding gears too long.
With a set of MacPherson struts in front and a torsion-beam rear suspension, the Trax can’t file down the roughest roads like a bigger, heftier SUV, but its responsible acceleration teams up with moderately responsive steering and good body control to iron out pavement that’s maintained to a decent standard. The Trax never rattled our teeth when it sailed over frost heaves and hot-patched tarmac, but it preferred the 18-inch all-season tires on the mid-range models to the Activ’s 19-inchers. (We weren’t able to sample the 17-inch wheels on the base version).
Is the Chevrolet Trax 4WD?
No. All versions have front-wheel drive, despite the “crossover” billing from Chevy’s marketing wing. It does sport up to 7.3 inches of ground clearance, in case TJ Maxx’s parking curbs need some repainting.
2024 Chevrolet Trax Comfort & Quality
The Trax feels Uber-ready.
The newly upsized edition of the Chevy Trax merits a 6 on our comfort and quality scale. It has great cargo space; it nearly gets a point for back-seat comfort, but almost drops one for some low-rent interior trim.
By the numbers Chevy says the 2024 Trax sits 4.0 inches lower than the 2022 Trax, while its wheelbase stretches by 6.0 inches and its overall length by 11.0 inches. That pegs the 2024 Trax at 106.3 inches in wheelbase and 178.6 inches long; by Chevy’s figures it’s just 0.7 inches shorter in wheelbase and 4.5 inches shorter than the aged gas-powered Equinox.
Drivers and front passengers in most versions of the 2024 Trax make do with manual-adjust seats. No worries; even without power adjustment the Trax has good support in most directions and the driver seat can be adjusted for a good driving position, though lower-end versions do not have a telescoping steering wheel. The front seats need better lumbar support, too, but unlike other recent GM SUVs, the Trax’s front seats have wide bottom cushions and taller seatbacks. They’re covered in a durable fabric on most versions, with Activ editions adding some synthetic leather trim on the bolsters.
The Trax has better back-seat space and comfort than some other GM trucks and SUVs, too. A 6-footer can expect at least an inch of knee room and the same for headroom once they’ve tucked in back, where the seats have firm cushions and enough recline in the backrest for comfort. It won’t quite carry a third large person in back, but two fit easily; the Trax has potential to be the most affordable new Uber ride, and that’s no slight.
Cargo space checks in at 25.6 cubic feet behind the back seats, and 54.1 cubic feet when those seatbacks get folded.
The Trax wears price-appropriate trim, made better than average in its detailing—like the way the silver dash trim fades toward the sides with a textured pattern. But some of it might not pass muster with drivers who might be willing to pay more for a better grade of interior trim. So, while we might otherwise deduct a point for some of the truly thrifty Trax trim—like the felt that lines the footwells, the hard plastic door trim, or the hollow sound that’s made when the doors or tailgate close—it presents such excellent value, we give it a pass.
2024 Chevrolet Trax Safety
No crash-test data exists yet for the ‘24 Trax.
How safe is the Chevrolet Trax?
We don’t know yet; it’s too new for the NHTSA or the IIHS to have crash-tested one. When they do, we’ll update this score.
All Trax hatchbacks come with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitors and rear parking sensors can be fitted to even the base model, while expensive trims can also be configured with adaptive cruise control.
Outward vision is mediocre to the rear quarters, where the Trax roofline sweeps upward and cuts into the view.
2024 Chevrolet Trax Features
The Trax’s infotainment and standard equipment carry the day.
The Trax comes in five distinct versions: LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS and Activ. All carry a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.
We give the 2024 Trax a 7 for its standard features and infotainment.

2024 Chevrolet Trax Fuel Economy
The Trax sips gas, but no hybrid’s offered.
Is the Chevrolet Trax good on gas?
The 2024 Trax does the work of an economy car when it comes to fuel economy. The EPA scores it at 28 mpg city, 32 highway, 30 mpg, which earns a 4 here.
Like the smaller Trailblazer and bigger Equinox, the Trax doesn’t come in hybrid trim. However, GM will launch its compact Equinox EV soon.
