Overview

The iconic Honda Civic epitomizes compact-car excellence with its mix of practicality and a fun-to-drive personality. The versatile Honda has a version for everyone; its lineup includes a four-door sedan, a two-door coupe, and a hatchback. It’s available with two outstanding four-cylinder engines and either an adroit continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) or a slick-shifting six-speed manual. In ride comfort, fuel efficiency, and most other attributes it ranks near the top of a highly competitive class that includes models like the Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla.

What's New for 2018?

After several significant additions to the 2017 model lineup, the 10th-generation Civic enters 2018 without any changes.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Civic offers two four-cylinder engines, both excellent. And you can't go wrong with either of the two available transmissions: a slick-shifting six-speed manual or one of the best CVTs in the business. A 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder is the standard powerplant in LX and EX sedans and LX coupes; a 174-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder does the pulling in all other models. Sport and Sport Touring hatchbacks bump horsepower to 180. The manual transmission is available in the lower trims and in the hatchbacks. A true jack-of-all-trades, the Civic strikes a near-perfect balance between comfort and driver engagement. Its smooth ride, responsive steering, and athletic chassis dynamics make it a joy to pilot in any driving situation.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Practical and modern in appearance, the Civic’s cabin is roomy and offers plenty of storage space. Upper-dashboard plastics are of the soft-touch variety, although there are some low-grade seating surfaces and a few tacky trim pieces. Although the interior of the Civic sedan is at the roomier end of its class, the coupe’s rear seats are almost useless to anyone of above-average height. There are a number of cleverly designed storage cubbies throughout the cabin, and the sedan’s trunk is one of the biggest in the class. Need even more cargo-carrying capability? Then check out the Civic hatchback.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 5.0-inch display is standard on the base Civic, along with features like Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims come with the HondaLink infotainment system, which includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen system with such features as navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Unfortunately, this system is a sore spot on an otherwise strong compact car. Its messy menus and confusing interface make it a struggle in day-to-day use. Fortunately, it allows users to work with their smartphone’s more logical onscreen interface.
