  • Highs Upscale and well-equipped cabin, efficient powertrains, quick refueling of the fuel-cell model.
  • Lows Only available in California, sparse network of hydrogen stations for fuel-cell version, ponderous handling.
  • Verdict The Clarity offers a very different type of ownership experience, but it works well as a family sedan while showcasing cutting-edge technology.

Overview

For 2017, the Honda Clarity is all-new and split into two distinct, though identical-looking models. The Clarity Fuel Cell is the third generation of the hydrogen fuel-cell FCV Clarity that made its debut in the 2008 model year, while the Clarity EV is a new entry, with the same body and interior, though powered by a battery pack. Both feature futuristic Accord-meets-Citroen design language. The Clarity EV is available only in California and Oregon, while the Clarity FC is available only in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, and Sacramento. Both are currently available for lease only, with the battery electric model priced at $269 per month with $1730 down, and the fuel-cell model going for $369 per month with $2499 down. Both include 24/7 roadside assistance, and the fuel-cell version includes $15,000 worth of hydrogen fill-ups and 21 days of luxury-car rentals.

What’s New for 2017?

This is the first year for the Clarity EV and also the first for the third-generation fuel-cell Clarity. The Clarity FC features a new cell stack design that's greatly reduced in size compared to the previous model. The stack now fits completely under the hood, taking up no more space than a Honda V-6 engine. Two aluminum hydrogen tanks are stored behind the rear seatback and under the rear seats. Both Clarity versions come in just one trim level, a top-spec model that is easily as premium as an Acura sedan, with no optional equipment.

Pricing

Original MSRP:

  • EV: $36,620 (nominal)
  • Fuel Cell: $59,365 (nominal)

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Clarity FC’s fuel stack powers a 130-kilowatt/174-hp electric motor that produces 221 pound-feet of torque and scores an EPA rating of 366 miles of range on full hydrogen tanks, which can be refueled in just three to five minutes. The Clarity EV comes with a 25.5 kilowatt-hour/161-hp electric motor providing 221 pound-feet of torque and a disappointing 89 miles of range. As for dynamics, either version of the Clarity is significantly heavier than a similarly sized Accord, with the fuel-cell model adding more than 700 pounds, so ride and handling are ponderous at best. But the Clarity is quiet, acceleration is instantaneous and confidence-inspiring, and its brakes are precise and easy to modulate. The driver-dialed Sport mode sharpens throttle response and increases regenerative braking.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

With just one upscale trim level available for both the Clarity FC and Clarity EV, the interior looks like a high-tech Acura sedan’s cabin. Either version has ample space for four adults, and the fuel cell model’s capaciousness has been heavily enhanced by the new cell stack design. The rear seat of either sedan is fixed, with no split fold-down feature. With the aluminum hydrogen tanks under the rear seat and behind it in the cargo space, just 12 cubic feet of volume remains in the FC's trunk. But with sparse availability of hydrogen refueling stations for the fuel-cell model, and the 89-mile EPA range of the EV version, you won’t be using either Clarity for any long trips anyway.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Both Clarity models come with a standard floating 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation and energy monitoring, as well as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, auxiliary jack, and a 12-speaker audio system with satellite radio. Crucially, the fuel-cell Clarity’s navigation screen maps out the locations of hydrogen refueling stations throughout California.
