  • Highs Potent Hemi V-8 engine, decent handling for its size, roomy and well-equipped interior.
  • Lows Doesn't make fuel economy a priority, rough ride over bumpy surfaces, just average cargo volume.
  • Verdict The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is a fast, good-handling muscle-ute that provides a dynamic driving experience while handling everyday chores.

Overview

Secure the groceries in the cargo area, activate launch control, and watch the tedium of weekend errand-running fade—fast. The Dodge Durango SRT muscle-ute cares not about sipping fuel or obeying noise ordinances. Under its vented hood lies 475 hp worth of Hemi V-8 driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination rockets this spacious and comfortable SUV to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, delivering plenty of drama along the way. With the extra power and a dose of visual attitude, the Durango SRT is essentially a three-row version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

What's New for 2018?

The Durango SRT is a new model for 2018. The performance-tuning experts at Fiat Chrysler’s SRT group shoved a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 under the Durango’s hood and added a firmed-up suspension, adaptive dampers, and beefy Brembo brakes. To make it look the part, the Durango SRT sports an aggressive body kit with a wide grille and lower intake, a functional hood scoop and air-extractor vents, body-color side skirts, and black 20-inch wheels.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Durango SRT’s 6.4-liter 475-hp Hemi V-8 gives it far more gusto than most people need in a three-row crossover. But we’re not most people, and if you’re reading this, you probably aren’t, either. The Durango SRT lays down its power in a smooth, linear fashion, is brutally quick, and sounds glorious under heavy throttle. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are both standard. With performance that rivals that of sports SUVs costing twice as much, the Durango SRT is an incredible value. Its steering is sharp and communicative, and the stiff suspension does a commendable job of disguising the Durango SRT’s weight and high center of gravity. Over rough stretches of road, the ride is far from pillow soft, and the most aggressive Track mode feels downright punishing on all but the smoothest surfaces.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the Compare "Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

For the most part, the Durango SRT’s interior doesn’t deviate from the standard-issue Durango—albeit a well-equipped one. Leather seats, second-row captain’s chairs, and a foldaway third row are all standard. Both first- and second-row occupants get heated seats while front chairs are also ventilated. Power adjustments for the driver and front passenger and reclining rear seats ensure everyone can get comfortable on a long journey. The third row, often a cramped place used only for kids, is actually quite roomy in the Durango. It may not offer the vast center-console storage of the Chevrolet Tahoe or the extra-wide door pockets of the Ford Explorer, but the Durango SRT’s storage bins should be large enough for most people. The Durango SRT has merely average cargo-area measurements, but it should provide most owners with adequate utility.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Displayed on an 8.4-inch touchscreen sitting prominently on the Durango SRT’s dashboard is the excellent Fiat Chrysler Uconnect infotainment system. The software responds crisply to inputs and is very user friendly. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation are standard, as are a 10-speaker BeatsAudio stereo system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and an auxiliary jack.
