  • Verdict Selecting from a wide range of trims and options, buyers can tailor their Edge from basic and thrifty to quick and sporty.

Overview

The mid-size Edge is one of Ford’s most popular models, largely because buyers can personalize it for their needs. Sized between the compact Escape and the garage-hogging Explorer, the Edge is a spacious, well-appointed, two-row crossover with a distinctive exterior and an extensive list of available features. If fuel efficiency is your thing, the base engine is a thrifty turbocharged inline-four. Those with a need for speed, look no further than the hot twin-turbo V-6 Sport model. In any of its trims, the Edge is a fine choice for both weekend warriors and families—or anyone who tows, road-trips, or plays in the great outdoors.

What's New for 2017?

The Titanium has a new 20-inch wheel design, and four creatively named new colors join the palette: Blue Jeans, White Gold, Canyon Ridge, and the extra-cost Burgundy Velvet.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A trio of engines provides a wide range of performance for the Edge, and all come mated to a competent six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. The base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 245 horsepower and, despite its casual acceleration, should provide adequate power for most customers. We’d recommend stepping up to the 280-hp 3.5-liter V-6, which delivers added gusto. But if you’re looking for an SUV that can outrun a Volkswagen Golf GTI from zero to 60 mph, check the box for the Edge Sport, which gets a 315-hp twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 and standard all-wheel drive. In all cases, the six-speed automatic is quick to respond to requests for more power, although shifts are sometimes lumpy rather than silky smooth. The Edge's handling is composed and competent, and braking performance is agreeable. It’s not as light on its feet as the athletic Mazda CX-9—our benchmark for crossover handling—but the Edge is reasonably enjoyable to drive and provides reassuring stability in corners. Its steering is nicely weighted, if not particularly communicative, and its ride is comfortable over imperfect road surfaces.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Edge features an interior design that is simple and understated, with plenty of room for people and cargo. The interior of our Titanium test vehicle came decked out with leather seats, but cloth is standard on SE and SEL models, while the Sport gets perforated leather seating surfaces. The seats are supportive and comfortably cushioned. Materials throughout the cabin are nicely chosen, but panel fit and finish could be better; we noticed a few misaligned dashboard pieces in our test vehicle. Outward visibility is average for the segment, but the Edge's step-in height is the lowest we tested in this class, making ingress and egress easier. If putting junk in the trunk is important to you, the two-row-crossover segment is a great enabler, and the competitors are all closely matched in cargo room.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ford provides a too-short list of standard connectivity features on the base Edge SE: a dinky 4.2-inch Sync display, Bluetooth connectivity, and just one USB port. Stepping up to the SEL and choosing the 201A option package is a must for infotainment power-users, as it includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen running Ford’s latest Sync 3 software, an extra USB port, a nine-speaker audio system, and AppLink, which connects apps on your smartphone with similar apps in the Sync software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also make their way into the mix with this package and add another layer of connectivity.
