  • Highs Spacious and well-equipped cabin, comfortable ride, available potent twin-turbo V-6.
  • Lows Base engine is less than thrilling, standard infotainment system lacks useful features, uneven fit on some interior panels.
  • Verdict The 2018 Ford Edge is a good choice for buyers looking for an attractive, comfortable, well-equipped mid-size SUV with plenty of standard and optional features.

Overview

The mid-size, two-row Edge crossover boasts a cabin that is well appointed and spacious enough to accommodate four adults and their luggage for a road trip. From relaxed to rowdy, the Edge has a model for every driver’s taste. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine sips fuel, but it’s the fire-breathing twin-turbo V-6 in the Sport model that will get a speed demon’s pulse racing. The Edge’s distinctive exterior and comprehensive options list let buyers easily outfit it to meet their needs, and its towing capacity makes it ideal for weekend warriors.

What's New for 2018?

There's a new SEL Sport Appearance package, which adds features like black exterior trim, gray 19-inch aluminum wheels, skid plates, grille surround, rear spoiler, and exterior mirror caps. SEL, Titanium, and Sport trims can now be equipped with the new Safe and Smart package, which includes such items as adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. Two new colors join the palette: Blue Metallic and Lightning Blue.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Edge comes with standard front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available. Its base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 245 hp, and it provides adequate power. But we’d recommend stepping up to the 280-hp 3.5-liter V-6 for added gusto. And if you’re looking for an SUV that can outrun a Volkswagen Golf GTI from zero to 60 mph, check the box for the Edge Sport, which gets a 315-hp twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6. The six-speed automatic transmission is quick to respond, although shifts are sometimes lumpy. Handling is composed and competent, if not overtly sporty. The Edge is not as light on its feet as the athletic Mazda CX-9—our benchmark for crossover handling—but it is reasonably enjoyable to drive. It provides reassuring stability in corners, and its ride is comfortable over imperfect road surfaces.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Edge boasts a spacious and well-appointed cabin. Titanium model comes decked out with leather seats, but cloth is standard on SE and SEL models. The new SEL Sport Appearance package includes upgraded cloth seating surfaces and other embellishments that lend some attitude to the interior. Materials throughout the cabin are nicely chosen, but panel fit and finish could be better, otherwise the interior design is simple and understated, with plenty of room for people and cargo. Competitors are all closely matched in cargo room, but the Edge’s thoughtful storage cubbies and slightly roomier cabin might seal the deal.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ford provides a very short list of standard connectivity features on the base Edge SE: a dinky Sync display, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and just one USB port. Technophiles should plan to upgrade their Edge to the Sync 3 infotainment system, which includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen running Ford’s latest Sync software, an extra USB port, a nine-speaker audio system, and AppLink smartphone connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
