Overview
Luxury carmaker Genesis is going to market with an electric version of its G80 sedan for the 2023 model year called Electrified G80. The name might be dull, but the car is not. That’s because the Electrified G80 is virtually indistinguishable from the gasoline-powered model inside and out—which is fine by us as we find its styling handsome and its cabin lovely. Instead of the regular G80’s turbocharged four-cylinder and twin-turbo V-6 engines, the Electrified G80 boasts a dual electric motor setup good for 365 ponies. A 87.2-kWh battery pack has been shoehorned into the car’s floorpan and is said to provide up to 282 miles of driving range per charge. Unfortunately, front- and rear-seat headroom are both slightly compromised due to the addition of the battery, which also causes a reduction in trunk space of two cubic feet. Despite these small drawbacks the Electrified G80 is a compelling package that drives almost identically to the gas-engine model, has an equally delicious interior, and offers a competitive driving range.
Where This Vehicle Ranks
What's New for 2023?
Not only is the Electrified G80 an all-new model in the Genesis lineup for 2023, it also resides alongside the new GV60 small EV SUV, the brand’s other foray into electrified automobiles.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The Electrified G80 is offered only in loaded Prestige form, which comes standard with plenty of luxurious features, including leather upholstery, wood trim, and a Lexicon premium stereo system.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
A pair of electric motors—one on each axle—gives the Electrified G80 all-wheel drive and a combined 365 horsepower. Acceleration is brisk and at our test track, the Electrified G80 hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. That result puts the Electrified G80 0.6 seconds ahead of the V-6-powered G80 Sport to 60 mph. The chassis feels just as lithe as the gasoline-powered model and the Electrified G80 comes standard with a rear-wheel steering system. All it’s missing is the familiar purr of a gasoline engine. Highway cruising is steady, comfortable, and quiet as well.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
Sandwiched under the Electrified G80’s floorboards is an 87.2-kWh battery pack that is good for an estimated 282 miles of range per charge. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, we observed an impressive 280 miles of range. We tested Genesis's claim that the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes when hooked up to a 350-kW DC fast charger and were satisfied with the result. Charging time lengthens to seven hours when plugged into a Level 2 outlet.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
Fuel economy numbers from the EPA are set at 105 MPGe city and 89 MPGe highway. That’s similar to what the Mercedes-Benz EQS achieves but behind rivals such as the BMW i4 and Tesla Model S. For more information about the Electrified G80’s fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Squeezing the battery pack into the G80 led to some minor changes inside the cabin that are not obvious in photos. For instance, headroom is reduced slightly in both the front and rear seats; taller riders will notice the headliner is a bit too close to the top of their head. Trunk space also shrinks by two cubic feet. Still, the interior is a sweet place to spend time, with a posh-looking design and premium materials throughout. The Electrified G80 comes only in loaded Prestige form, so it’s decked out with soft leather upholstery and attractive wood trim.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A wide 14.5-inch touchscreen sprouts from the top of the dashboard and acts as the hub for the Electrified G80's infotainment system. The display is manipulated via a circular controller on the center console as well as buttons on the steering wheel and voice commands. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is a powerful Lexicon audio system.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Electrified G80 offers a host of driver-assistance technology as well as a cool feature called Smart Park. Also available on select Hyundai models, the system allows the driver to maneuver the car in and out of tight parking spots without actually being at the controls. (Try it if you dare. We’ll let you know how well it works when we get a chance to sample it.) For more information about the Electrified G80’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Genesis provides a remarkable limited warranty and the longest powertrain coverage in the biz. It also supplements those noteworthy protections with one of the better complimentary maintenance plans available, apart from Jaguar's unbeatable five years or 60,000 miles
- Limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles
