While its initial luster may have rubbed off, the revitalized Ford Bronco remains an appealing, more palatable alternative to the Jeep Wrangler.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Ford Bronco? What does it compare to?
The Bronco is an off-road-oriented SUV in the vein of the Jeep Wrangler. Also shop it against the Toyota 4Runner if you’re heading for the trails.
Is the 2024 Ford Bronco a good SUV?
There are better choices for in-town comfort, but the 2024 Ford Bronco is a full-personality four-wheeler available in a huge range of trim levels. The lineup rates 6.5 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Ford Bronco?
The 2024 Bronco largely carries over, though the base trim has been dropped. The formerly standard 8.0-inch touchscreen has been supersized to 12.0 inches and most trim levels see various tweaks. It’s likely Ford will offer up at least one or two special editions throughout the model year.
With its 1960s-era blocky lines, the Bronco’s looks are unmistakable. (And if you’re really confused, its big BRONCO badging stretching across the upright grille on many versions is a dead giveaway.). The Bronco is unabashedly retro, albeit with some modern touches such as available LED headlights, integrated tow hooks, and big wheels and tires nearly as tall as the original’s hood line. Two- and four-door versions are available, each of which can be paired with either a composite hardtop with removable panels or a conventional fabric top with plastic windows toward the rear.
The retro theme continues inside, with a bolt-upright dash and easy-clean (read: cheap plastic) trim throughout.
The base 2.3-liter turbo-4 churns out 275 hp via either a 7-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic, while a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 is widely available for those who need a little more. The Raptor’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 spins out 418 hp. Four-wheel drive comes standard, of course, but it takes adding the Sasquatch package with its 35-inch all-terrain tires, Bilstein dampers, and extra off-road modes to go beyond typical mid-size pickup capability. Other versions build in even more tech, such as beefier axles, semi-active shocks, and tires as tall as 37 inches.
Responsive steering makes the Bronco less lumbering in town than its big dimensions might otherwise suggest. The ride is firm, yet with all that rubber it can swallow up big bumps. Highway cruising means constant steering corrections, though.
Fuel economy? It’s not great, though the base model checks in as high as 20 mpg combined.
Inside, look for decent seats and a boxy cargo area. A 12.0-inch touchscreen sits front and center on the dash, above rubberized knobs and switches. No version drips with luxury, though leather and heated seats can be added.
A five-star rating from the NHTSA provides some crash-test peace of mind. Look for standard automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam headlights, plus widely available blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control.
How much does the 2024 Ford Bronco cost?
The Bronco now costs $41,025, about $5,000 more than last year since the base trim has been dropped. The upside is that the four-door Big Bend is only about $750 more than the two-door; the upcharge for four doors was more like $3,000 last year.
Other trims see hefty increases of over $1,000 in most instances, while the Bronco Raptor now runs nearly $92,000, a $3,255 upcharge.
Where is the 2024 Ford Bronco made?
In Wayne, Michigan.
2024 Ford Bronco Styling
Retro but not overly cartoonish, the 2024 Ford Bronco is a modern interpretation of a vaunted classic.
Is the Ford Bronco a good-looking SUV?
It’s a lot of fun, that’s for sure. We award the Bronco an 8 on the TCC scale, with two points for its classic exterior and one for a decent cabin.
The latest Bronco largely channels the first-generation original offered from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. Big round headlights are connected by a broad “Bronco” script on the upright front fascia. A chunky bumper gives way to hefty fender flares along the relatively flat sides. The upright windshield is flanked by big rearview mirrors. Modular bumpers and fender flares can be pulled up for customization or replacement, too. Even the doors are removable.
Each trim has a slightly different personality, though the Heritage Edition with its white grille and wheels stands out the most—until you get to the Everglades with its mesh-like grille, snorkel, and winch, or the wide-stance Bronco Raptor.
The cabin has a vintage flair, too ,with its horizontal dash and plentiful Bronco badging. Ford did a nice job with fun details, though the materials are far from special. Even Jeep’s Wrangler is dressier inside.
Most models have cloth seats, though leather and synthetic hides are available.
2024 Ford Bronco Performance
The 2024 Ford Bronco is a blast off-road.
While not the most refined on-road cruiser, the 2024 Bronco is a hoot to drive. It’s peppy enough to earn a point for acceleration, and it’s amazing off-road even in its tamest form. That nets it another point for a 7 on the TCC scale. The pure absurdity of the Raptor and Everglades versions would probably nudge them to an 8 if rated independently.
Is the Ford Bronco 4WD?
Yes, of course. But maximum capability depends on the trim. Ford includes a basic 2-speed transfer case with a low range on all. But each trim level has different additional off-road gear, not all of which builds directly on the version below it. For instance, the second-tier Black Diamond comes with a locking rear differential, which costs extra on the step-up Outer Banks.
Most serious off-roaders will be fine with the widely available Sasquatch package that adds Bilstein shocks, a raised suspension, and a few more goodies. The Wildtrack trim goes several steps farther with its Fox shocks, even more ground clearance, and trio of locking differentials.
If you need absolutely everything, the Raptor sits up even higher and features semi-active dampers from Fox plus a front stabilizer bar disconnect and heftier Dana axles. It also rides on 37-inch tires that are as much as five inches taller than other trims, giving it a staggering 13.1 inches of ground clearance.
Just which Bronco suits your needs will likely depend on two things: 1) an evaluation of the trails you’re likely to encounter; and 2) how much swagger you want. Most of us don’t need Raptor-grade utility, but they sure do look great, right?
How fast is the Ford Bronco?
It’s no bucking bronco in most forms, but the Bronco is plenty peppy. The base 2.3-liter turbo-4 puts out as much as 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque when running on premium fuel (or 275 hp/315 lb-ft on regular unleaded), which is good enough for decent acceleration with the standard 7-speed manual gearbox. A 10-speed automatic is optional there, and standard otherwise.
The step-up 2.7-liter turbo-4 puts out as much as 330 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque on premium, and it can fire off a sub-seven second run to 60 mph.
Ford offers as many as seven drive modes, which tweak steering heft, throttle tuning, and transmission behavior.
Bronco Raptors use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 rated at 418 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. They’re noticeably quicker, though without the manic rush of power found in a Jeep Wrangler 392.
Broncos have a comfortable ride thanks largely to their huge tires and, in most versions, sophisticated shocks and dampers. The independent front suspension and electric power steering deliver good handling and highway stability, while the coil-sprung rear end promises impressive off-road articulation.
The Bronco can tow up to 4,500 pounds in Raptor form, though most of the lineup is rated at 3,500 pounds.
2024 Ford Bronco Comfort & Quality
Ford’s Bronco has an expressive, if hardly luxurious, cabin.
The 2024 Ford Bronco isn’t a great family hauler, though its interior has plenty of cargo space. We rate the four-door at 6 out of 10 by adding points good rear-seat legroom and a big cargo area but subtracting one for considerable road and wind noise even with the widely available hardtop. The two-door would be an even 5 out of 10 due to its small rear-seat area.
Up front, look for bucket seats with relatively short cushions but decent padding. There’s not a huge amount of adjustment, either. Rear-seat riders will find 36.3 inches of legroom in four-door guise, plus the ability to squeeze in three abreast for short stints.
Four-door models have 35.6 cubic feet of cargo space, though the rear door is heavy and the liftover makes loading bulky items a chore.
The standard soft top is predictably loud even at neighborhood speeds. The available retractable soft top is easy to swap out while on the go. A four-panel hardtop runs $700 or so and it’s fairly simple to remove once you’ve done it a couple of times. The cargo area is big enough to store the roof panels, too.
You can even remove the doors (and store them inside the Bronco, though not alongside the hardtop panels). Conveniently, the rearview mirrors are mounted to the body, so they stay attached to the Bronco when the doors are off.
The Bronco’s interior is designed to be easy to clean after a day of off-roading, so materials are far from luxurious. Ford did a so-so job of picking low-sheen plastics with appealing grains, though. The Wrangler is better in this regard.
2024 Ford Bronco Safety
The 2024 Ford Bronco has done all right in crash testing.
How safe is the Ford Bronco?
It has a fairly good crash-test record, though subpar headlight effectiveness has held it back from earning a Top Safety Pick score from the IIHS. Still, the Bronco comes with standard automatic emergency braking and it earned a five-star rating from the NHTSA. Those assets are good enough for a 7 on the TCC scale.
The IIHS also faulted its head restraints for front-seat riders.
Most versions offer blind-spot monitors and active lane control, while adaptive cruise control is generally unlocked after adding a few option packages.
2024 Ford Bronco Features
Ford offers a dizzying array of Bronco variations.
Even with the discontinuation of the base trim level this year, the Bronco is offered in nine variants, each of which can be difficult to sort out. Still, we rate the lineup at 8 out of 10 thanks to good standard fare with a big 12.0-inch touchscreen, all those available extras, and the impressive roster of off-road features you can add. It’s no longer the value it once was, though.
Ford’s 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is pretty basic, too.
The base version this year is the Big Bend, which for $41,025 comes with 17-inch alloy wheels wearing 32-inch tires, synthetic leather seats, a 12.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and basic crash-avoidance tech.
Which Ford Bronco should I buy?
That’s a tough one to answer. The Black Diamond runs around $2,500 more, which buys bulky steel bumpers, rock rails, additional drive modes, and a few other off-road goodies. It’s a great starting point for off-roaders, especially since you’d likely spend way more than that adding those items by flipping through an aftermarket catalog.
The Badlands trim is for more dedicated four-wheelers with its 33-inch all-terrain tires, disconnecting front sway bar, and locking front/rear differentials. At $51,290, it’s no bargain, but it’s an amazing four-wheeler right out of the box.
On most trims, the optional Sasquatch package adds 35-inch wheels mounted over 17-inch wheels as well as locking front and rear axles. That gear is standard on the Everglades, Wildtrak, and Heritage Edition trims.
How much is a fully loaded Ford Bronco?
The Raptor costs $91,730 this year, which buys a twin-turbo V-6, upgraded Dana axles, arctic truck-style fender flares over 37-inch tires, and a host of additional tweaks. Aside from some questionable cosmetic options ($1,950 for carbon fiber trim!), the Bronco Raptor comes nearly loaded from the factory. You can add leather for $2,500 and forged wheels that are beadlock-capable for $1,995. Opt for every goodie in the book and the price comes in just below $100,000.
2024 Ford Bronco Fuel Economy
The 2024 Ford Bronco’s boxy shape means so-so fuel economy.
Is the Ford Bronco good on gas?
It’s not a thrifty choice, though the base 4-cylinder ekes out a 2 on the TCC scale. Fuel-economy estimates vary by trim level, but those with standard 32-inch tires check in at 20 mpg city, 21 highway, 20 combined with the base engine and either transmission. Even the upgrade to the 2.7-liter (which comes with the automatic) means a negligible hit to 19/21/20 mpg. Those figures barely earn a 2 on the TCC scale.
Black Diamond and versions with the optional Sasquatch package are rated at just 17 to 18 mpg combined, depending on what’s underhood and what gearbox is selected. If you think that’s bad, consider that the Bronco Raptor is estimated at just 15 mpg combined.
