The 2024 Genesis G80 offers a compelling alternative to the luxury segment’s usual suspects.
What kind of car is the 2024 Genesis G80? What does it compare to?
Genesis offers the 2024 G80 mid-size luxury car with a choice of two turbocharged engines, as well as the Electrified G80 full battery EV. This sedan rivals the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Volvo S90, and Cadillac CT5.
Is the 2024 Genesis G80 a good car?
Yes. It’s beautiful and elegant, and well worth a look if you’re shopping for any of its rivals. We award a TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Genesis G80?
This year, Genesis cuts the rear-wheel-drive models from the lineup, which means all-wheel drive now comes standard. Every model now gets a wifi hotspot, advanced forward collision-avoidance assist, and highway driving assist. The base 3.5T Sport model now gets upgraded with a handful of comfort and advanced safety features, such as a digital key, wireless device charging, a Lexicon premium audio system, a surround-view camera system, and a rear occupant alert system. However, the 3.5T line no longer has power soft-close doors. Finally, Bond Silver Matte joins the color palette, in lieu of Valencia Gold, Verbier Matte White, and Siberian Ice.
The Genesis G80 announces its arrival with a large, tasteful shield grille, with the brand’s signature split headlights on each side. Inside, you’ll find a sublime interior trimmed in wood and metal, with finely detailed stitching along the leather surfaces. Standard power-adjustable and heated front seats come standard, and top trims get quilted leather and more power comfort features. There’s enough room inside for four adults, though the Electrified G80 sacrifices some rear legroom, headroom, and trunk capacity to accommodate the battery pack.
The G80 2.5T gets a turbo-4 engine paired with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic, good for 300 hp. We prefer the 3.5T, which gets a twin-turbo V-6 making 375 hp and capable of a 0-60 mph run in around five seconds. The Electrified G80 is even quicker. It makes 365 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque from dual motors, though some of that power goes toward hauling the excess weight from the battery pack.
In 3.5T and Electrified form, the G80’s suspension gets upgraded with adaptive dampers paired to a road-scanning sensor system to adjust in anticipation of road imperfections, as well as rear-wheel steering. It’s on the soft side for spirited drivers but perhaps too firm for relaxed cruising.
The 2024 G80 earns the NHTSA five-star safety rating and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, and Genesis loads it with safety features that typically cost thousands on rivals. Standard tech includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and new for 2024, advanced forward collision-avoidance assist and a highway driving assist system.
How much does the 2024 Genesis G80 cost?
The 2024 Genesis G80 2.5T starts at $55,345, including a $1,195 destination charge. That’s an increase of about $5,000 compared to the 2023 lineup, but that now includes all-wheel drive and a few other standard features. Other standard fare includes 12-way heated and power-adjustable front seats and a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 3.5T Sport starts at $65,195. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced for the 2024 Electrified G80, but it’ll likely start around $81,000.
Where is the 2024 Genesis G80 made?
Genesis builds the G80 in Ulsan, South Korea.
2024 Genesis G80 Styling
The 2024 Genesis G80 has a touch of European elegance with its curvy bod and beautiful cabin.
Is the Genesis G80 a good-looking car?
Yes. While some competitors have gone overboard lately with massive, goofy-looking grilles and excess illumination, the Genesis offers up a mature confidence in its fastback profile and impressive cabin. We award a 9 for styling with points for the exterior and interior.
The G80 wears its wide crest-shaped grille well, and the split headlights feature a ribbon of LED that flows around the front fenders and toward the body line to the sedan’s pert rear end. This look is mirrored at the back, and it’s elegant both day and night.
The Electrified model looks much the same, though the roof is about half an inch taller. To blend in with the rest of the G80 lineup, it conceals the charge port in the solid mesh panel that mirrors the grille on gas models.
The cabin is dazzling, with a low dash and high-quality touchpoints such as knurled metal dials and sumptuous leather. The overall look is calming and cohesive, and the only questionable element is that the touchscreen is hard to reach from the driver’s seat, though voice controls and console-mounted dials help alleviate this issue.
2024 Genesis G80 Performance
Genesis balances power and agility, but the G80 can’t compete with true performance sedans.
The G80 comes with a choice between turbo-4 and twin-turbo V-6 engines, both with plenty of power on tap, and cruising is smooth and effortless thanks to the electronically controlled independent suspension system. That’s an 8.
Is the Genesis G80 AWD?
Yes. It used to come standard with rear-wheel drive, but those models were dropped from the lineup for 2024. All G80 models now feature an all-wheel-drive system that shares the torque between the front and rear axles based on the need for traction.
How fast is the Genesis G80?
It’s not as fast as German rivals, or even the Cadillac Blackwing, but it’s no slouch. The 2.5T, with 300 hp on tap from the 2.5-liter turbo-4, is capable of a 0-60 mph run in about seven seconds. The 3.5T makes 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque from its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, and can shave that sprint time to around five seconds. Both get a smooth 8-speed automatic and selectable drive modes to optimize the G80’s various personality traits.
The 2.5T delivers the more comfortable ride of the two gas models, thanks to its front strut and multi-link rear suspension system and 18-inch wheels. It’s a little softer than some might want from a performance sedan, but delivers in passenger comfort.
The 3.5T gets a suspension system that pairs electronic dampers with a road-scanning camera system to tune on the fly. In Sport Prestige trim, rear-axle steering gives better precision, but the 20-inch wheels yield a firm ride that can be harsh over bumps.
Electrified G80 performance
The Electrified G80 features a 136-kw motor at each axle and a 87.2-kwh battery pack beneath the floor. It’s heavy, topping the scales at more than 5,000 pounds, which lends a pleasant planted feel on the road, but lacks the potent acceleration off the line you’ll likely find in rival luxury EVs. That said, with 365 hp and 516 lb-ft on tap, it’s not slow, it just takes a little longer to really get going. It’s quiet, too.
The Electrified G80’s estimated 282-mile range doesn’t particularly impress, and it’s not available in every state.
2024 Genesis G80 Comfort & Quality
Make no mistake, the 2024 Genesis G80 is a legitimate luxury sedan.
The Genesis G80 features exceptionally supportive and contoured seats in both rows, and a gorgeous cabin built to high standards. That adds up to an 8, though it’s worth noting the Electrified G80 is less spacious.
The G80 features standard 12-way power-adjustable, lumbar-supported, and heated front seats. Nappa leather comes on upgraded seats with power-adjustable side bolsters, thigh extenders, and a feature that adjusts driver posture to improve alertness. They aren’t the best seats in the segment, but they’re up there. It’s unfortunate that it’s hard to reach the touchscreen from the driver’s seat.
There’s enough space to accommodate four large adults, with plenty of rear headroom and 38.7 inches of legroom. We wouldn’t recommend squeezing a third adult in the middle rear seat, though. The Electrified G80 sacrifices almost three inches of rear legroom, some headroom, and about two cubic feet from the trunk.
Luxury materials are found throughout, such as intricately stitched leather, wood dash paneling, and metallic trim. Some versions go flashier than others, but it’s always warm and welcoming.
2024 Genesis G80 Safety
The 2024 Genesis G80 fares well in crash evaluations and comes loaded with tech.
How safe is the Genesis G80?
It’s safe. It earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and the NHTSA five-star overall rating, and it comes with a ton of standard and optional safety features. Those criteria add up to a 9 here.
This year, Genesis adds advanced forward collision avoidance assist and highway driving assist to all versions. That builds on automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, adaptive cruise control capable of a full stop, a safe exit monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Options include a blind-spot camera system that feeds a live view to the instrument cluster, a surround-view camera system, and a remote park assist system.
Outward vision isn’t great, particularly to the rear three-quarters, but the range of cameras and sensors helps alleviate that concern somewhat.
2024 Genesis G80 Features
The 2024 Genesis G80 gets good luxury features, but the infotainment system frustrates.
The base G80 2.5T gets good standard features and plenty of options, although the infotainment system has too many menus and can be awkward to use. For the standard and optional fare and for Genesis’ standard 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, which includes three years or 60,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, we award an 8.
For 2024, the base G80 is the 2.5T Standard with all-wheel drive, which costs $55,345 including a $1,195 destination charge. That’s about $5,000 more than last year, but Genesis dropped the rear-wheel drive models from the lineup, which justifies that price increase, more or less. This G80 model includes 12-way power-adjustable heated front seats, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and new for this year, a wifi hotspot.
The 2.5T Advanced, at $60,045, adds a panoramic roof, cooled front seats, wood interior trim, a Lexicon audio system, and 19-inch wheels. The Sport Prestige, $64,895, gets leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, massage function for the driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, and a surround-view camera system.
Which Genesis G80 should I buy?
The 3.5T Sport tempts. At $61,195, it includes most of the optional features from the 2.5T lineup, plus the bigger engine and an electronically controlled suspension system.
How much is a fully loaded Genesis G80?
Genesis hasn’t yet announced pricing for the 2024 Electrified G80, but it’s a safe bet that it’ll go around $81,000 or so.
2024 Genesis G80 Fuel Economy
The gas Genesis G80 is thirsty, but the Electrified G80 helps its case somewhat.
Is the Genesis G80 good on gas?
Not especially, and the more efficient rear-drive configuration is gone this year. That lands at an EPA rating of 22 mpg city, 30 highway, 25 combined for the turbo-4 all-wheel drive G80. That’s good for a 3 here.
With the twin-turbo V-6 engine, the G80 is rated for 17/25/19 mpg.
The Electrified G80, if rated separately, would be a 9 on our scale, with a 282-mile range, an average of 2.9 miles per kwh, and an EPA MPGe rating of 97 mpg. However, the Electrified G80 has limited availability and isn’t expected to be a volume seller, so it doesn’t really move the needle here.
Genesis says the Electrified G80 can charge from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes with a 350-kw connection thanks to its 800-volt DC fast-charging system. At home on 240-volt household current, it’ll charge overnight. A Vehicle to Load (V2L) feature enables the Electrified G80 to power appliances or tools.
Genesis includes three years of Electrify America 30-minute charging sessions.
