Genesis steps confidently into flagship sedan territory with the 2024 G90, but tempers true sportiness in favor of comfort.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Genesis G90? What does it compare to?
The biggest and most expensive Genesis in the lineup offers a compelling alternative to luxury heavy-hitters, but falls short in some areas. The G90 competes with cars like the Audi A8, Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series, and Mercedes S-Class.
Is the 2024 Genesis G90 a good car?
It’s not as much of a value as it once was, but yes, it’s still a good sedan. It earns a TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Genesis G90?
The 2024 G90 mostly carries over from last year.
The G90 comes standard with a twin-turbo V-6 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. In base form, it makes 375 hp, and it’s available in a 409-hp version courtesy of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The suspension system adapts on the fly thanks to road-scanning cameras, and mild-hybrid models add rear-wheel steering and air suspension. It’s not especially sporty, even with Sport mode activated, but it’s calm and coddling.
The G90 makes a bold styling statement with the shield-shaped Genesis grille, LED-accented lighting front and rear, and a profile that’s a little less graceful than the brand’s smaller sedans. It’s wicked suave inside, though, with warm and welcoming design executed in top-notch finishes.
Multi-function front seats with a wide range of power adjustments immediately offer a warm welcome, and the rear seats might be better when equipped with massagers. The audio system is crystal clear and other luxury touches helps the G90’s few faults, like the too-small trunk, fade into the background.
The G90’s poor 21-mpg fuel economy is another problem, though this Genesis scores high in safety, with a list of standard features including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control.
How much does the 2024 Genesis G90 cost?
Budget at least $90,000 for a base 3.5T model. That includes all-wheel drive, a panoramic roof, nappa leather upholstery, a cabin fragrance diffuser, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, and a class-leading warranty.
Where is the 2024 Genesis G90 made?
It’s built in Ulsan, South Korea.
2024 Genesis G90 Styling
Awkward exterior proportions give way to a lovely cabin in the 2024 Genesis G90.
Is the Genesis G90 a good-looking car?
It’s polarizing, with competing lines and dynamics taking over the exterior. However, we award two points for the interior, so it’s a 7.
The G90 wears the signature Genesis shield grille and distinctive headlights found on the smaller G70 and G80 sedans, and there are some graceful lines among the confusion of the side profile. However, the G90 simply doesn’t scale upward as well as we’d expect, due largely to its tall, ungainly greenhouse and a tail that’s more Hyundai than Genesis. Hyundai offers some lovely tails, for what it’s worth, but the G90 deserves a more upscale, cohesive look.
The G90 is just as ambitious, but more successful in the cabin. The layout is more horizontal than in the brand’s smaller sedans, with sweeping touchscreens and digital displays on a background of quality synthetic leather dressed up with aluminum and wood trim. There’s a thoughtful logic to the control layout and overall ergonomics, for an overall stunning, refined look and feel.
2024 Genesis G90 Performance
The Genesis G90 rides in smooth, effortless elegance.
With V-8-like power courtesy of a twin-turbo V-6, and an adaptive suspension that can predict road conditions, the G90 is a comfy cruiser, though not really a sporty one. We award points for acceleration and ride quality, good for a 7.
Is the G90 4WD?
Yes, the Genesis G90 comes standard with all-wheel drive.
How fast is the G90?
It’s quick enough, with a choice of two twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 powertrains, but too heavy to be truly fast, topping out at 5,192 pounds. The base powertrain comes in at 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, and the upgraded powertrain adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that’s less for efficiency than for low-end power. It comes in at 409 hp and 405 lb-ft. Both require premium fuel.
Generally, the G90 flows smoothly and quietly, and keeps up easily with traffic. The default driving mode is optimized for comfort, which uses a multi-link suspension with adaptive dampers networked into the car’s camera system, so the car can anticipate and adjust for imperfections in the road ahead. The mild-hybrid version gets a slick multi-chamber air suspension that yields a near-floating sense of movement, along with a tighter turn radius, rear-wheel steering, and uprated tires. However, neither suspension setup comes close to making the G90 feel nimble. It’s languid through curves and Sport mode tightens up just enough to improve tracking at highway speeds. Chauffeur mode adjusts the rear suspension for less real-world intrusion on VIP occupants.
2024 Genesis G90 Comfort & Quality
Genesis surrounds the G90’s comfortable seats with excellent design and materials.
A big, bold footprint means the G90 offers plenty of space for four adults, but luggage gets less attention, and same goes for the middle rear passenger. Still, the G90 gets an 8 for quality and comfort thanks to its supportive front and outboard rear seats and its spectacular fit and finish.
The G90 stretches 207.7 inches on its 125.2-inch wheelbase, and Genesis makes the most of the already-generous interior space with a low dashboard sculpted to create an open and airy feeling, the better to stretch out in the 18- and 16-way power-adjustable driver and passenger seats. The front seats are cooled and have bolsters and bottoms that automatically adjust in Sport mode for a more secure potion.
Depending on your perspective, the G90’s control layout dazzles or overwhelms, with an array of touchscreen inputs, a separate touchpad on the steering wheel, buttons for the power-open doors, and a buzzing rotary shifter.
The back is less busy, with about 38 inches for both legroom and headroom. The upgraded version also gets power-adjustable, cooled, and massaging rear seats, with extra ambience from the cabin fragrance diffuser. It’s an excellent place to recline on long trips, as long as you don’t have a middle rear passenger or more than 12 cubic feet of cargo (shaved down to 10.6 cubic feet in the mild-hybrid) in the trunk behind you.
The Genesis G90 pulls it all together with fantastic attention to detail that holds its own with more expensive competitors, evident in the delicate speaker grilles, nappa leather seating, upholstered dash, and glass shifter.
2024 Genesis G90 Safety
The G90 boasts good but incomplete crash-test ratings and good safety tech.
How safe is the G90?
The IIHS rates the G90 with top Good scores in four crash tests and a Top Safety Pick+ rating, while the NHTSA hasn’t yet tested one. With an impressive list of standard and optional tech, we give the G90 an 8 here.
Genesis equips the G90 with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, blind-spot cameras, LED headlights, a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, and a remote park assist system.
The advanced adaptive cruise control system is capable of hands-free driving for long stretches. In our testing, it traveled for more than two minutes along open highway without steering input before chiming and flashing to alert for driver intervention. However, the automatic lane change system isn’t quite as refined as BMW’s and Mercedes’ systems.
2024 Genesis G90 Features
The Genesis G90 offers amenities aplenty across the range.
Genesis fits the 2024 G90 with a ton of standard and optional features. We award points there, for its decent infotainment, and for its class-leading warranty, adding up to a 9 on our scale.
Which Genesis G90 should I buy?
The base G90 3.5T is well equipped at $90,395, with all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, nappa leather seating surfaces, 18-way power-adjustable driver and 16-way power-adjustable passenger front seats, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, an in-car fragrance diffuser, smartphone-based digital key service, and 20-inch wheels.
The G90’s infotainment system features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo system.
Genesis leads the class with a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty that includes a 3-year/36,000-mile scheduled maintenance plan and concierge service. The powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles.
How much is a fully loaded Genesis G90?
The G90 in 3.5T E-SC (E-Supercharger) configuration starts at about $100,000. It adds mild-hybrid technology, an air suspension system, rear-wheel steering, a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo, an additional wireless charging pad, power-adjustable rear seats with massaging and cooling, and 21-inch wheels. Looking for more? Special paint colors cost $575 for pearl or metallic, or $1,500 for matte.
2024 Genesis G90 Fuel Economy
Don’t let the mild-hybrid fool you, the Genesis G90 is a thirsty sedan.
Not at all. Both powertrains, the standard gas engine and the 48-volt mild-hybrid, rate a 2.
The standard gas powertrain is actually the more efficient of the two, with EPA ratings of 18 mpg city, 26 highway, 21 combined. The mild-hybrid model offers up some performance benefits thanks to the extra jolt of power, but actually uses more fuel, to the tune of 17/24/20 mpg.
