Buying tip
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is more of a showpiece than a smart buy, but it’s guaranteed to attract a crowd.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 GMC Hummer EV? What does it compare to?
The GMC Hummer EV is a massive electric truck or SUV with quasi-military styling and prodigious power. It’s truly without a direct rival, though the Rivian R1T and R1S, as well as the Ford F-150 Lightning provide a similar general outlook.
Is the 2025 GMC Hummer EV a good truck or SUV?
That depends on what you consider to be good. It’s a tech, styling, and swagger showpiece, with no shortage of any of the three. It’s also enormous, expensive, and inefficient by EV standards. It’s a 7.6 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 GMC Hummer EV?
The Hummer EV sees no major changes for 2025.
Available as either a crew-cab pickup or a smaller (but still huge) SUV, the latest Hummer reboot is a blocky, chunky, squared-off military cosplay machine that has absolutely nothing in common with the military vehicles deployed to all corners of the globe.
It’s an intriguing styling exercise, though, with a plenty of squared-off lines and fun, unique angles.
It’s also downright quick in either form.
Top-end versions have three electric motors that can deliver as much as 1,000 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque to all four of the massive tires. The lighter SUV version has 830 hp, but it’s no acceleration slouch. Either version hits 60 mph in the low three-second range, with plenty of drama as a part of the process.
The lineup also offers a 570-hp two-motor version, which we have yet to test drive.
The GMC Hummer is an off-road master. Its air suspension climbs up for as much as 15.9 inches of ground clearance, or it can hunker down for something resembling on-road competence. There’s even a Baja mode for high-speed dune-bashing. Rear-wheel steering helps tighten the turning radius in town, though nobody would really call this beast “nimble.” That said, its Crab Walk feature that lets the Hummer EV sneak into cramped spots is a definite crowd-pleaser.
With all that power, you might think that the Hummer EV could tow an Airbus A380. It might, but that’ll way exceed its 7,500-pound maximum towing rating.
With more than 300 miles of range on a full charge, the Hummer EV has a decent range for your adventures. Plan on spending a lot of money charging it, though, as this is one of the least-efficient EVs we’re likely to ever see.
It’s pretty comfy inside, though the cabin isn’t anywhere near as spacious as its massive exterior would otherwise suggest. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, but row two is a tight squeeze for three. Standard synthetic leather upholstery and a fair amount of hard plastic don’t impart an especially upscale ambience, though the attention to detail here is superb.
These 9,000-pound-plus EVs are well-equipped with crash-avoidance technology that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and the automaker’s high-tech Super Cruise system that allows for hands-off driving. They’ve not been crash-tested, however.
How much does the 2025 GMC Hummer EV cost?
You’ll need just shy of $100,000 for the base version, though the $8,100 premium for the three-motor model seems worth it at these prices.
Where is the 2025 GMC Hummer EV made?
In Hamtramck, Michigan.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Styling
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV looks like a toy truck come to life.
Is the GMC Hummer EV a good-looking truck/SUV?
It is as long as you’re OK with something that looks like it came from the toy car aisle at your local big-box store. The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is overstyled and overwrought, but that’s the point. We give it an 8 for its sheer brashness, with two points above average for its exterior and one for its cabin.
The GMC Hummer EV comes in two forms: a big crew-cab pickup, or a 20-inch-shorter SUV model. They share the same front end, with a blunt fascia, vertical vents, and big fenders over 22-inch wheels wrapped in massive rubber. GMC is a bit stingy on exterior colors, but then again you probably don’t need neon hues to get everyone’s attention when you drive a Hummer EV.
There’s a lot going on inside, with the 13.4-inch touchscreen sitting over a bar of toggle switches and a rectangular air vent. It’s all quite familiar, though, and the hints of copper trim provide a suitably upscale look. If your last experience in a Hummer was its last go-around with the H2 and H3, you’ll find that the brand has moved way upmarket.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Performance
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV doesn’t fret at obstacles. It mashes them.
There is nothing subtle about the way the 2025 GMC Hummer EV tackles any kind of terrain. It’s cumbersome around corners, but it is ferociously quick and massively capable off-road. It’s a 6 on the TCC scale.
Is the GMC Hummer EV 4WD?
Of course. Three electric motors deliver full-time all-wheel drive and they have the ability to transition power to each wheel separately. Traction is a given over just about any obstacle, aided in part by huge all-terrain tires. The GMC Hummer EV relies on few conventional off-roady bits with its electronic locking front differential and its ability to dole out power to each wheel independently at the rear. Yet it’s also remarkably true to the original Hummer’s form and function in its fully independent suspension, only here there are air springs that can lift it up to an almost unimaginably high 15.9 inches of ground clearance.
Hummer provides five drive modes, including a few for off-road use. The available Extreme Off-Road package is the way to go if you must drive over everything; it adds extra skid plates, rocker protection, and a staggering 17 cameras that provide view of everything below and to the sides.
True, the SUV version has a better breakover angle and a far superior departure angle, but no Hummer EV suffers by the numbers. In any especially tricky situation, the Crab Walk mode can shuffle the Hummer EV at an angle to sneak around big objects that might be in its way.
How fast is the GMC Hummer EV?
It’s rapid. Truck versions are rated at 1,000 hp and 1,200 hp of torque. Tap the ludicrously named Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode and the suspension hunkers down to help vault this massive vehicle to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds. The SUV version’s 830 hp holds it back to around 3.5 seconds. Either way, that is an astounding amount of accelerative force, especially since the truck weighs about 9,000 pounds. Yes, 9,000 pounds. That's as much as two Chevy Traverse SUVs, and those aren’t exactly lightweights.
The less-costly EV 2X trim level features two motors good for 570 hp; we’ve yet to drive this setup, but the mere $8,100 jump to the 3X seems to render the base model a bit of a dud.
Predictably, the GMC Hummer is no handling champ, though its air suspension tries to keep body roll in check, without a lot of success. The knobby off-road tires on some versions provide little grip on-road, so driver will need to slow down more than usual for corners.
At just 7,500 pounds, the GMC Hummer EV’s top tow rating isn’t as impressive as you might expect, but then again electric vehicles don’t necessarily make fantastic distance tow vehicles anyway.
Enormous brakes do a decent job stopping the Hummer EV. You can engage regenerative braking in one of three ways (more isn’t always better), including the easy-to-use L setting on the center console shift lever. There’s a one-pedal paddle on the steering wheel, but it’s hard to modulate this much vehicle to a stop. Use it for the last bit of braking before you bowl over the vehicle in front.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Comfort & Quality
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is remarkably tight inside.
No, the 2025 GMC Hummer EV probably won’t fit in your garage, but that doesn’t mean it’s massively spacious. It’s roomy, but no more so than a typical crew-cab full-size truck or large SUV. We score it at 7 out of 10 here thanks to its plush front seats and plentiful cargo space in both the pickup and SUV.
You’ll find standard synthetic leather upholstery plus heated, cooled, and power-adjustable front seats that can accommodate a wide range of passenger sizes. The rear seat is plush and features a convenient split-fold arrangement, but three passengers is wishful thinking. For an EV, the interior is surprisingly cramped, which carries on a Hummer tradition.
Out back, the pickup truck’s 5-foot bed can be extended to 6-foot-10 via a power-deploying tailgate. There’s some underfloor storage for things like the charging cord, while the 11.3 cubic-foot frunk can store the detachable roof panels.
The Hummer EV SUV’s cargo area goes from 35.9 to 81.8 cubic feet of storage when the rear seat backs are folded down. Those are significantly lower figures than the similarly sized Chevy Tahoe; it seems as though many of the space-utilization advantages of an EV platform have been lost here.
Materials-wise, the Hummer EV is a mixed bag. There’s a lot of shiny plastic inside, but you’ll find terrific attention to detail in the trim finishes. It’s not overly luxurious, though it should be at these prices. There’s also a lot of wind and road noise.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Safety
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV may be safe for its passengers, but everyone else should look out.
How safe is the GMC Hummer EV?
It’s never been crash-tested by the IIHS or the NHTSA, so we can’t rate the 2025 GMC Hummer EV for safety. It's likely a good place to be in a crash given its size and weight, but woe for anything it hits.
It comes with typical safety tech, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control. It also includes a decent surround-view camera system, but the 17-angle system on the options list is worthwhile since outward vision is not very good.
GM’s terrific Super Cruise driver-assist system that allows for eyes-on-road, hands-off driving on hundreds of thousands of miles of pre-mapped highways is standard, though it does require a subscription fee after an initial trial period.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Features
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is full of tech, as it should be for six figures.
It’s theoretically possible to find a sub-$100,000 GMC Hummer EV, but you may have to special-order it. With that in mind, the GMC Hummer EV is hardly a good value, but it is exceptionally well-equipped, offers some extravagant options, and features a good infotainment system. It’s an 8 here.
The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is unimpressive; the freebie first tire rotation is hardly a value-add, either.
Either version starts at $98,845 for the two-motor version. Its standard equipment set includes a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Bose audio; synthetic leather upholstery; heated, cooled, and power-adjustable front seats with driver-side memory; heated rear seats; a heated steering wheel; a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster; an air suspension; and 22-inch alloy wheels that mount all-terrain tires.
Which GMC Hummer EV should I buy?
The 2X is nicely equipped, but if you’re going for a Hummer EV, you might as well go all in. The 3X is $8,100 more and adds much more power and range, plus a few other small items. We’d add the Extreme Off-Road package with its locking differentials and 18-inch wheels wrapped in mud tires, plus perhaps the Infinity Roof with its transparent panels. All in, such a Hummer EV will set you back $117,565.
How much is a fully loaded GMC Hummer EV?
Add bronze trim, a power-retractable tonneau cover, additional lighting, and the extended-range battery pack and it’s possible to spend around $150,000.
2025 GMC Hummer EV Fuel Economy
The 2025 Hummer EV has a lot of range, but it’ll guzzle a lot of energy.
What is the GMC Hummer EV's electric range?
It posts some pretty impressive range figures given its massive size, but the 2025 GMC Hummer EV is hardly an efficient EV. The SUV 2X is estimated at up to 303 miles of range, while the more powerful 3X checks in at 314 miles. The extended-range battery pack can boost range to as much as 381 miles, though it’s worth noting that the Extreme Off-Road Package subtracts around 20 miles of range due to its off-road tires and extra mass.
Admittedly, our scale here rewards any type of EV. The Hummer EV is a 9.
In TCC testing, we’ve seen between 1.3 and 1.4 miles per kwh, which is horrendously inefficient. The Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T will do at least a mile more per kwh.
That said, the GMC Hummer EV can recharge somewhat quickly thanks to a 19.2-kw onboard charger standard on most versions. It can add about 30 miles of range per hour on a Level 2 charger, though you’ll need a 100-amp circuit.
The available Power Station generator can enable vehicle-to-vehicle charging. Theoretically, you could charge another Hummer EV at a rate of about nine miles per hour, though the 3 kw you can send toward camping gear or an air compressor via a 120-volt plug is probably more useful.
