Overview

Genesis's unique take on luxury is evident in each of its offerings, particularly so in the 2023 GV70 SUV, which earned a spot on our 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2023. Instead of creating a low-cost value-player that feels cut-rate, Genesis has created a compact luxury SUV that's, in many ways, nicer and posher than similarly priced rivals, such as the BMW X3 and the Volvo XC60. It may not have the brand-name recognition of those other SUVs, but the GV70 makes up for it with a splashy look and a beautiful interior that are undeniably upscale, so even if people can't name it, they'll know it's high-end when they see it. A turbo four or twin-turbo six provides more than enough power, and all-wheel drive is standard on every model. Handling is nimble, if not exactly Porsche Macan–crisp, and the GV70's ride is comfortable when you just want to cruise in peace. The rear seat could be more spacious, so if you're regularly toting passengers, it might be better to upgrade to the larger and even more luxurious GV80.

What's New for 2023?

The 2.5T Prestige trim has been turned into the 2.5T Sport Prestige for 2023, complete with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and three-zone automatic climate control. All Sport models, even those with the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, get touch-sensitive steering-wheel buttons and black-painted rear brake calipers. The midrange 2.5T Advanced model now comes standard with the upgraded Lexicon stereo system, and the 2.5T Select gets upgraded front brake calipers and a heated steering wheel. Capri Blue, Makalu Gray, and Makalu Gray Matte are all newly available exterior colors.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The GV70 starts at an attractively low price, but we think upgrading to the Advanced trim is well worth the money. Doing so adds leather upholstery, interior ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, and a host of driver-assistance features including a remote self-parking feature. Going with the Advance trim includes niceties from the Select model as well, including 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a 16-speaker Lexicon stereo system. The 2.5-liter turbo four is plenty peppy, and the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 is admirably quick, and both are refined in their operation.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The GV70 is available with either a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The four-cylinder serves as the entry-level engine and makes 300 horsepower while the V-6 makes 375 horsepower. While a manual transmission is offered with the turbo four in the G70 sedan, the GV70 sticks with an eight-speed automatic as standard equipment; all-wheel drive is also standard. During our initial test drive, we noted discernible athleticism, especially in the Sport Plus driving mode, and the twin-turbo V-6 pulled strong: At our test track, the GV70 with the V-6 delivered an impressive 4.9-second zero-to-60-mph time. Since then, we've adopted a V-6 GV70 into our long-term test fleet, and it's even quicker, making the run to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The turbo four is also satisfyingly quick, recording a 5.6-second result in the same test.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The most efficient GV70 model, according to the EPA, is the one with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which earned ratings of 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The twin-turbo V-6 earned ratings of 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, the 2.5T model delivered on its promise of 28 mpg, while the 3.5T beat its estimate with a 26 mpg result. For more information about the GV70's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The GV70's cabin design is more daring than its larger GV80 sibling's; we like how the sweeping lines of the exterior carry into the interior for a cohesive look. Fine materials line the inside, and the knurled glass shift knob looks and feels luxurious. A common complaint about the G70 sedan is its cramped rear seat, and while the GV70 has more space to offer and additional legroom for back-seat riders, it's still not particularly roomy. Cargo capacity is more generous, but we'll have to wait to see how the GV70 compares with chief rivals such as the Audi Q5, the X3, and the GLC-class in our real-world testing.

      Infotainment and Connectivity

The GV70 adopts its infotainment arrangement from the larger GV80 SUV, which means a large, widescreen infotainment display sprouting from the dashboard with a clickwheel controller mounted on the center console. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard features. A high-end Lexicon stereo system is available as an option. We've found that the rotary infotainment control knob located on the center console sits so close to the rotary transmission control knob that we sometimes change the radio station when we're trying to grab a different gear.

      Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist are all present and accounted for. For more information about the GV70's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

      • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
      • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
      • Standard adaptive cruise control

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Genesis brand offers excellent warranty coverage that stretches far longer than most other premium automakers. The GV70 comes with powertrain coverage for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. The Jaguar F-Pace offers similar bumper-to-bumper coverage and longer complimentary maintenance, but the powertrain policy is nearly half that of the Genesis.

      • Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
      • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
      • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
