The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 cleaves throwback styling with cutting-edge electric car performance.
What kind of car is the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5? What does it compare to?
The Ioniq 5 five-door electric hatchback rivals vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, and Volkswagen ID.4.
Is the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 a good car?
It’s spacious, swift, and striking. It’s also incredibly efficient to drive, which explains a big chunk of its TCC Rating of 8.5 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
This year, Hyundai has made a wifi hotspot and rear-seat side airbags standard. It now offers a rear camera mirror on the Limited model. Still to come: a hot Ioniq 5 N with about 600 hp.
New for the 2022 model year, the Ioniq 5 inaugurated a new range of fresh-start Hyundai electric cars. It shares its electric-car skateboard with the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, but not its look. The Ioniq 5’s an homage to the hot hatchbacks of the 1980s: it pairs its spot-on silhouette with pixelated LED lighting and heavily creased door panels. The cockpit runs dual digital displays, one for gauges and one with touchscreen input for infotainment.
With either its 58-kwh or its larger 77.4-kwh battery pack, the Ioniq 5 provides swift, sure-footed driving. With the smaller battery it’s offered only in rear-wheel drive; with the larger pack, drivers can choose rear- or all-wheel drive. Ultimate range varies from 220 to 303 miles, while power output rises from 225 hp to 320 hp. Hyundai claims 0-60 mph times of as little as 5.0 seconds—and that rush of power comes with a pliant ride and mostly sharp steering. It’s dialed in for the sweet spot of crossover handling, which promises even sharper responses with the arrival of the Ioniq 5 N. It’s also able to tow up to 2,300 pounds—or to charge from 10-80% on a 350-kw DC fast charger in as little as 18 minutes.
With a 118.1-inch wheelbase, the Ioniq 5 has a longer span between the front and rear wheels than the three-row Hyundai Palisade crossover. The interior’s not quite as spacious—but it is enough for up to five people for shorter trips. It could use lower front seats with more lumbar support, but the rear seats suit even tall passengers well. Fold those rear seatbacks down and the Ioniq 5 sports 59.3 cubic feet of storage space to go with the 0.85-cubic foot front trunk.
The NHTSA gives the Ioniq 5 a five-star overall rating, and the IIHS dubs it a Top Safety Pick+. Every version has standard automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control. A surround-view camera system and blind-spot monitors can be fitted as options where they’re not standard; get them, because that marvy roof pillar cuts into the rearward view.
How much does the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 cost?
Prices for 2024 for the Ioniq 5 in SE trim with the smaller battery start at about $43,000. It includes satellite radio, navigation, heated front seats, a sliding second-row seat, cloth upholstery, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Ioniq 5 SEL, our pick, slips in below $50,000 and includes a power tailgate, synthetic leather upholstery, and standard wireless smartphone charging.
Where is the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 made?
In South Korea.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Styling
The Ioniq 5 renders the past as the future.
Is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 a good-looking car?
It’s a 9 for us. It reincarnates the era of hot hatchbacks from the 1980s and infuses it with a digital-leaning futurism worth two points outside, two inside.
Look back to the last century and to Hyundai’s original Pony car and the Ioniq 5’s inspiration becomes clear. It’s an exaggeration of that ethos, maybe filtered through a Dodge Omni lens—all in the best way possible. Hyundai takes the hatch body and filigrees it with bitmap-inspired details that play across the front and rear ends as if they never went out of style. The Ioniq 5 looks squat and compact in photos, but in person it’s a big midsizer that pairs a gently dipped roofline with diagonal slashes and big wheels to mask its true size and heft. True talent makes the past look new and fresh like this.
Inside, the Ioniq 5 pays respects to the Pony and the last century with effective and charming details. Two 12.3-inch screens dominate the dash: the driver display and gauges occupy one, with the other touchscreen unit commanding the hatchback’s navigation and infotainment. The design leaves room for a sliding armrest and a tall center console that intersects with the wide dash without interfering with the low-slung look. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t bury all its functions in its touchscreen, but it has demoted some there to maintain a sleek look and clean interfaces.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Performance
The Ioniq 5 damps the road well and scoots off the line.
Docile by default, slick by nature, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets eager and more responsive when it’s dialed into Sport mode. We give it a 7 for performance, with a point each for its powertrain and its suspension tune, even before the Ioniq 5 N bows later this model year.
Is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 4WD?
Some are. If there’s a single motor in it, it’s rear-wheel drive. Two motors grant it all-wheel drive.
How fast is the Hyundai Ioniq 5?
Hyundai claims a 0-60 mph time of about seven seconds for the slower version, which packs a 58-kwh battery under the Ioniq 5’s floor and employs a single motor to deliver its energy to the rear wheels. With an automaker-rated 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, this Ioniq 5 sports an EPA rating of 220 miles of range.
With a second electric motor and a larger 77.4-kwh battery pack, the Ioniq 5 delivers 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels, and can drive for up to 260 miles on a full charge. It’s in the range of the Ford Mustang in terms of acceleration, with a claimed 0-60 mph dash in 5.0 seconds; with rear-drive and the big battery, it’s nearly as quick while it also goes for 303 miles on a full charge.
The electric Hyundai can tow up to 2,300 pounds.
New-age power propels the Ioniq 5, and that propulsion gets backed with progressive programming to the accelerator and smoothly integrated regenerative braking. Switch it from the default Normal drive mode into the Eco slot and it trims its e-sails for more moderate responses; in Sport it’s wired on roadgoing caffeine, with four levels of regenerative braking that allow it to stop via a squeeze on steering-wheel-mounted paddles.
The Ioniq 5 flaunts this driving verve though it has a softly tuned suspension. With a front-strut, five-link rear setup, it smothers small bumps without heaving over them as some rivals do. It’s refined and settled, with the ride of a plusher and larger car. That trade-off comes with more body lean than its boy-racer bod predicts, and in turn that generates some dithering in its steering, but on a curvy road it all knits together for a lively driving feel. We’re eager to see how that’s all resolved with the high-performance Ioniq 5 N yet to come.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Comfort & Quality
The Ioniq 5’s quiet, comfortable cabin has lots of interesting details.
The Ioniq 5 hatchback suits four passengers and lots of cargo inside a cockpit that’s rife with smart and stylish touches. With its excellent rear seats, ample storage space, and detailed interior, it’s an 8 here.
With a 118.1-inch wheelbase and a 182.5-inch overall length, the Ioniq 5 offers up much more interior space than gas-powered cars with similar footprints. It’s obvious when taking a seat inside—and it’s also obvious that the high floor from the battery pack renders front-seat comfort less than ideally. The seats themselves have good support and bolstering, but they leave tall drivers perched too close to the roof. More lumbar support wouldn’t hurt, either.
In back, the Ioniq 5’s seats make up for the lost front-row opportunity. They slide on a track to trade off rear-seat legroom for cargo space, but don’t give up any comfort. Three people won’t mind the back seat for a short crosstown trip, thanks to the tilt of the back and bottom cushions.
Hyundai carves out a 0.85-cubic-foot front trunk in the Ioniq 5, and it pairs with 27.2 cubic feet of hatch space to dole out great space behind the back seat. Need more? The Ioniq’s rear seats fold down to boost cargo space to 59.3 cubic feet.
The Ioniq 5’s interior is a mood. With damped road and wind noise and just a touch of motor whine, the crossover putters along in a hushed way, basking in the glow of all the LED screens inside. Materials feel as good as they look, and the horizontal theme of the interior gives the impression of wide-open space.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Safety
It’s almost perfect in the safety category.
How safe is the Hyundai Ioniq 5?
The IIHS dubs it a Top Safety Pick, while the NHTSA gives it five stars overall. The Ioniq 5 also comes with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, rear-seat side airbags, and blind-spot monitors.
Along with available blind-spot cameras, a surround-view camera system, and automatic lane-change ability, the Ioniq 5’s nearly perfect here—but its thick roof pillars cut down on the view to the rear quarters.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Features
A long warranty and great technology drive the Ioniq 5—so long as it’s offered where you live.
The Ioniq 5 scores well in this category, given its long list of standard features, its great infotainment system, and its 5-year/60,000-mile warranty that comes with 3 years of free scheduled maintenance. But while it’s a good value, it’s not inexpensive—and it’s not offered in each of the 50 states. It’s an 8 here.
Which Hyundai Ioniq 5 should I buy?
The Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range comes with dual digital displays, heated front seats, a sliding second-row seat, synthetic leather seats, navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Oddly in the most advanced Hyundai, that smartphone compatibility requires a corded connection.
For $49,775, the Ioniq SEL includes wireless smartphone charging, a power tailgate, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, and more advanced driver assistance.
How much is a fully loaded Hyundai Ioniq 5?
The $55,875 Ioniq 5 Limited bundles a head-up display, remote park assist, a power front passenger seat, and cooled front seats.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Fuel Economy
The Ioniq 5 tops the efficiency charts.
Is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 good on fuel?
It’s as efficient as today’s best mainstream electric SUVs, with the ability to travel 3.3 miles per kwh on Long Range models. That’s a 10.
With the rear-drive, 58-kwh base model, the EPA assigns a range of 220 miles. With the larger 77.4-kwh battery, the Ioniq 5 can trek up to 303 miles in single-motor, rear-drive form or 260 miles with dual-motor all-wheel drive. Upgrade the AWD version to 20-inch wheels and range drops.
The Ioniq 5 charges from 10-80% in about 18 minutes, with a peak charge rate of 240 kw. On a lower-speed Level 2 charger, its 10.9-kwh onboard charger can top up the SUV in about seven hours.
