  • Highs Low entry price for a luxury badge, excellent fuel economy, agile handling.
  • Lows Honda Civic roots are apparent, cabin isn’t premium enough, engine power is just okay.
  • Verdict The 2018 Acura ILX is a solid small-sedan value, but the Civic sedan it’s based upon is an even better one.

Overview

The 2018 Acura ILX has a premium badge and low starting price for a small luxury sedan. Yet, beneath the sheet metal the ILX is little more than a gussied-up version of the popular Honda Civic. To its credit, the ILX has excellent fuel economy, and its size makes it a great fit for zipping through city traffic or squeezing into snug parking spots. Yet the same can be said for the Civic, and it costs thousands less.

What’s New for 2018?

The 2018 Acura ILX is pretty much a complete carryover from the previous model year. This first-generation ILX was introduced in 2013, and between then and now, the 2016 model year brought the most significant changes. This included dropping the previous base 150-hp four-cylinder and the introduction of the optional AcuraWatch suite of safety features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Acura ILX has one choice of engine, a 201-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder that sends power to the front wheels courtesy of a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is adequate for everyday driving, though the engine lacks any real edge to it. It feels underpowered compared to many luxury rivals, such as the Audi A3 and Lexus IS. At least the ILX is nimble and light on its toes. The ride is generally well composed, though engine and road noise sneak into the cabin at highway speed.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior of the ILX is fine for those seated up front, though space is at a premium for anyone in the second row. It’s fine back there for short trips, but long drives with four adults onboard could lead to frayed nerves (and sore legs). Cargo space measures in at around 12 cubic feet, and the folding rear seat back helps expand trunk volume when hauling bulky objects. Standard features on the ILX include dual-zone climate control, faux leather seating, push-button start, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, moonroof, and a rearview camera. Overall, most major controls are where you want them, but the interior quality and ambiance fails to make the grade as a true luxury sedan. Did we mention the ILX is based on the Honda Civic?

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 5.0-inch information screen comes standard on the 2018 ILX. If you want a touchscreen system, that means upgrading to the optional dual-screen setup. This includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen coupled with an 8.0-inch information screen perched higher on the dash. Standard tech includes Bluetooth and a single USB outlet. Adding the optional Technology Plus package brings along navigation, voice recognition, GPS-connected climate control, and the AcuraLink telematics system.
