Refined, stylish, comfortable, and even frugal in 4xe trim, the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an appealing if expensive choice.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Grand Cherokee comes in two different lengths that target rivals as diverse as the Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Passport.
Is the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good SUV?
An appealing design, a quality ride, and strong powertrains earn the 2024 Grand Cherokee a 7.0 out of 10 on the TCC scale. It’s quite expensive, though. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The mid-level Limited trim gains new wheel designs. Otherwise, the Grand Cherokee stands pat.
Two Grand Cherokee versions vie for shoppers. The standard-length model is plenty spacious for four or five passengers in a pinch. The Grand Cherokee L adds a third row and more cargo space. Both share the same seven-slot grille, squared-off wheel arches, and available two-tone paint. Inside, look for a crisply styled cabin with loads of tech, including an optional touchscreen for front-seat passengers.
The standard 3.6-liter V-6 cranks out 293 hp, which is enough for most uses. Those who tow will want the 5.7-liter V-8 for its 357 hp and ability to lug a 7,200-pound trailer. The smartest buy here is the 4xe, which puts out a range-topping 375 hp from a 2.0-liter turbo-4 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 4xe can travel 26 miles on a full charge and then average upward of 23 mpg thereafter. Other versions range from 17 to 22 mpg combined, and they don’t qualify for federal, state, or local incentives.
On all, a quick-witted 8-speed automatic transmission delivers crisp shifts. Truth be told, non-hybrid versions drive the smoothest, but the allure of gas-free commuting would sway us into the 4xe.
No matter what’s under the hood, the Grand Cherokee’s independent suspension can swallow up bumps and its responsive steering makes this chunky SUV a pleasure to drive. It takes stepping up to Trailhawk or Overland versions to unlock the best off-road goodies including additional drive modes, skid plates, and tow hooks, however.
Inside, look for a standard 8.4-inch touchscreen in the Laredo, which quickly grows to a 10.1-inch display in higher-spec versions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto add considerable appeal.
The Grand Cherokee offers great comfort in the first and second rows, while L models have in-the-pinch space for adults and plenty of room for teenagers.
All models come with a good array of driver-assistance features. Higher-end models offer even better lane-centering, but Jeep lacks true hands-off tech. While the NHTSA rates the lineup at five stars overall, the IIHS has thrown up a red flag in its limited testing. Stay tuned for more.
How much does the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?
Jeep is quite proud of its mid-size SUV. Figure just about $41,330 for a base Laredo with rear-wheel drive, and budget well north of $50,000 if you want leather seats, a sunroof, and uprated audio. Grand Cherokee 4xe models run well above $60,000 once you start adding a few features, too.
Where is the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee made?
In Detroit.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Styling
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s chiseled physique offers lasting appeal.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee a good-looking car?
It lives up to the model’s 30-year history with its squared-off lines and limited adornment. The Grand Cherokee has aged well since day one, and the current model is no exception.
We rate it an 8 out of 10, with most of those points allocated toward its exterior. The cabin’s no slouch, though.
A short, upright grille with seven slots nods to Jeep’s past, but the big LED headlights are solidly 21st-century. Squared-off wheel arches and clean side profile lines give the Grand Cherokee a classic appearance. Differentiation between trims is minimal, though, aside from the 4xe. That version’s blue accents give it away as the plug-in hybrid. Trailhawks also wear chunky tires and exposed tow hooks for a rugged and practical appearance.
The Grand Cherokee is svelte and clean inside, even if its materials don’t quite match its price tag in the top models. The wing-shaped dash houses an 8.4-inch touchscreen in its cheapest form, though most models swap in a bright 10.1-inch display.
Limited exterior and interior hues make personalization a challenge, though.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Performance
Sublime ride quality and impressive off-road ability in certain forms make the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee a standout.
Not every Grand Cherokee is ready to tackle the vaunted Rubicon Trail, but your neighborhood’s pockmarked pavement will pose no challenge. We rate the 2024 Grand Cherokee at 7 out of 10 thanks to its good acceleration and its impressive off-road ability, when properly equipped.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD?
Rear-wheel-drive versions of most trim levels exist for those in Sunbelt states.
Only the Trailhawk version boasts Jeep’s full arsenal of four-wheeling bits, though. Base Grand Cherokees with their Quadra-Trac 1 transfer case are essentially all-wheel-drive crossovers meant for snow or light dirt paths. The available Quadra-Trac 2 system includes a low range, while Quadra-Drive 2 tosses in a limited-slip differential for even better traction.
How fast is the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The base 3.6-liter V-6 puts 293 hp to the wheels, which is just fine for most commuters. The optional 5.7-liter V-8 isn’t that much gutsier on paper, but it ups towing capacity to 7,200 pounds (a 1,000-pound gain over the base version).
Our choice here is as much practical as it is based on passion. The 4xe powertrain takes a 2.0-liter turbo-4 and bolts on a hybrid system good for a total output of 375 hp. It’s peppy but it also allows for tailpipe emissions-free driving for more than two dozen miles, which makes it a perfect (and almost silent) commuter, so long as you plug it in.
No matter its propulsion, any Grand Cherokee rides quite well. The independent suspension smothers bumps—or, wait, maybe it’s that even the fleetest Grand Cherokee weighs 4,300 pounds. It’s hard not to smother the road below.
Grand Cherokee L versions have a longer wheelbase that helps smooth out an already fantastic ride.
Good steering heft helps make the Grand Cherokee nimble around town, while it tightens up for canyon cruises. Impressive active lane control keeps this big Jeep centered in its lane at speed, too. The available air suspension provides an even more cosseting ride, plus it hunkers down at speed to improve stability. Trailhawk versions can hike up their suspensions to provide 11.3 inches of clearance, at the expense of wheel droop for off-road articulation. Still, they’re plenty capable for most owners ready to head into the wilderness in $60,000-plus vehicles.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Comfort & Quality
The Jeep Grand Cherokee coddles its occupants.
You’ll fight for any seat inside the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We rate this range at 9 out of 10 thanks to comfy front-and second-row seats, plush materials in most configurations, a big cargo area, and a refined overall feel. They’re not quite Range Rovers, but they’re close–at half the price.
Standard models stretch 194 inches long, while the L runs 10.0 inches longer with all of that space split between rear-seat passengers and cargo.
Power-adjustable and heated front seats are fitted to most configurations. Cloth is standard, with leather a must-have from the Limited up. Even shorter versions have decent rear-seat room, while the L is a road trip machine in row two. The Grand Cherokee L’s third row is good enough for two adults for short stints, though it trails the Kia Telluride and Honda Pilot.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Safety
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee flubs an important crash test, but fares OK.
How safe is the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
That’s complicated. The NHTSA rates it at five stars overall. The IIHS, meanwhile, has given it a Top Safety Pick award, but in its recently updated front-impact test, the Jeep earns a “Poor” score. We don’t expect a repeat for the award based on that score, but for now, it helps the Grand Cherokee to a score of 8 here.
All models come with a good array of crash-avoidance tech, including active lane control, lane-departure warnings, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. Higher-trim versions can add front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera setup, and a driving assistant that allows for limited hands-free stints at highway speeds. It’s not quite Level 2, but it’s close.
Outward vision is decent thanks to a low belt line and narrow roof pillars.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be beautifully outfitted, so long as your pockets are deep enough.
Jeep packs a lot of features into its Grand Cherokee lineup, but you’ll pay a pretty penny for the best stuff. We rate the range at 8 out of 10 thanks to big screens, great customizability, and lots of standard fare.
All models come with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, though Jeep tosses in the first few oil changes.
The Laredo runs about $41,500 to start, which is a lot of cash for something with cloth seats and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring. Just because, Jeep also charges $600 if you want a paint color other than white, and $2,000 more for four-wheel drive.
Grand Cherokee L versions cost slightly more.
Which Jeep Grand Cherokee should I buy?
The Limited trim level balances features and value well enough. You’ll still need more than $52,000 to get one with four-wheel drive, but you’ll find leather seats, a size-up 10.1-inch touchscreen with sharper software, and a power tailgate.
If you want to go off-road, however, Jeep will want you to step up to the Trailhawk. That model comes only as a 4xe, which is just fine with us. Figure around $67,000 to start, and even then Jeep only builds it in three color combos.
How much is a fully loaded Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Buckle up. A Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve with the 4xe powertrain will set you back over $80,000 with its nappa leather trim, head-up display, night vision, and other high-end features.
2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Economy
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a fuel economy champ in 4xe guise.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee good on gas?
Gas-only versions are pretty thirsty, but the hybrid does well. We rate the 2024 Grand Cherokee range at 2 out of 10 based on the V-6 that sells the best, at least for now. It’s estimated as high as 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined in most rear- and four-wheel-drive versions. Grand Cherokee L models slide to 21 mpg combined.
The V-8 notches these SUVs to a dismal 14/22/17-mpg estimate.
Redeeming the lineup is the 4xe, which offers up to 26 miles of electric range, 23 mpg combined, and a 56 MPGe score.
