The 2024 Wagoneer S arrives as Jeep’s first full battery electric vehicle tipping into an ever-crowded luxury space.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S? What does it compare to?
Jeep’s first full battery electric vehicle for North America, the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is a midsize crossover SUV. It’s related only in name to the Wagoneer full-size SUV that was resurrected for the 2022 model year. It shares a flexible electric vehicle platform with the Dodge Charger EV, but more closely rivals other electric crossovers such as the Cadillac Lyriq, Tesla Model Y, and even the Genesis Electrified GV70.
Is the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S a good SUV?
We won’t know until we drive it later this year, but Jeep’s plug-in hybrids (PHEV) designated as 4xe models have proved popular. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was the bestselling PHEV in 2023. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S?
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S finally hatches out of the developmental nest as a new electric vehicle built on a global platform. Parent company Stellantis calls it the STLA Large platform and it supports midsize vehicles, with the Wagoneer S being the second of eight to launch for North America in the next couple years.
The Wagoneer S has the slab sides of the larger Wagoneer, but with its long nose and integrated rear roof spoiler that opens like a wing, it takes on a profile more reminiscent of the Chevy Blazer EV. The brand’s trademark seven-slot grille appears electric in this iteration, by being part of the housing below the daytime running light that bridges the front end. A lower grille is the only aperture on the face. In back, unlike other Wagoneer models, the Jeep lettering returns and a 4xe badge appears on the tailgate, even though this is not a PHEV.
Even though the multi-energy platform is designed for electric vehicles, it’s versatile enough to support gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, so we’ll see what else comes next in the Jeep family.
Is the Jeep Wagoneer S an electric vehicle?
Yes, but final specs haven’t been announced. The Launch Edition of the Wagoneer S has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system rated at 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque. Jeep expects it to go from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. That beats the Tesla Model Y performance by a hair, and outguns the Hellcat-equipped SUVs in the Dodge and Jeep family. Some of that performance is aided by the aerodynamic design that has the solid grille, the rear spoiler wing, and underbody shielding that sets the coefficient of drag at 0.29, which is significantly lower than other SUVs, especially the brick-like Wagoneer SUVs in the family.
All that torque also enables what Jeep is better known for, off-roading. The Wagoneer S features Jeep’s Selec-Terrain drive mode selector with Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand modes. The drive units and control modules individually control torque to each axle for instant responses when roughing it, or for shutting down the front axle when cruising at highway speeds for efficiency’s sake. The ground clearance is only 6.4 inches, however. That is lower than most off-road themed crossover SUVs (Subaru crossovers sit at 8.7 inches), but a Wagoneer S Trailhawk Concept with an electronic rear locker and all-terrain tires suggests that an off-road model will be offered.
The motors are fed by a 100-kwh lithium ion battery pack with a 400-volt architecture, and Jeep estimates it will deliver more than 300 miles of range. The Launch Edition rolls on 20-inch black wheels, however, so it’s unclear if that estimate applies to that model or a forthcoming mid-grade model.
Plugged into a DC fast charger at a peak of about 200 kw, it can recharge from 20-80% in 23 minutes. The Launch Edition comes with a 48-amp (11.5-kw) home AC or Level 2 charger or the equivalent public charging credits via the brand’s Free2move Charge app and ecosystem.
How big is the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S?
It’s nowhere near as large as a Wagoneer full-size SUV family but at 192.4 inches long and with a 113.0-inch wheelbase, it’s sized within an inch of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It doesn’t fit a third row like the Grand Cherokee L, and the crossover slots between the compact Cadillac Optiq and midsize Cadillac Lyriq, or between the Chevy Equinox EV and Chevy Blazer EV in GM’s growing electric family.
It seats five passengers, with good cargo room of 30.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats or 61.0 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. Legroom is ample in both rows, but headroom can be tight in the rear for taller passengers.
How much does the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S cost?
Initially, the Wagoneer S will arrive in only a Launch Edition model for $71,995, including destination. It’s unclear what standard features will arrive on a base model, but the Launch Edition is a showcase for the nicer things in the Stellantis feature chest.
The interior sports a flat-bottom and flat-top steering wheel, it has heated and cooled power front seats covered in synthetic upholstery, and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen anchors the center of the dash. It has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and is flanked on either side by a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen for the passenger. It all rocks to a 1,200-watt McIntosh sound system with 19 speakers and a 12-inch subwoofer.
Where is the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S made?
It’s built in Mexico.
