Though it may not be the most fuel-efficient choice, the 2024 Kia Telluride aces just about every family-hauler test.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Kia Telluride? What does it compare to?
The Kia Telluride is a three-row crossover SUV. Compare it to the related Hyundai Palisade plus the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, and Subaru Ascent.
Is the 2024 Kia Telluride a good SUV?
As long as you’re OK with its prodigious thirst, the 2024 Kia Telluride is a great choice. Its spacious cabin, great ride, and chiseled looks earn it a TCC Rating of 7.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Kia Telluride?
After an update for 2023, the Telluride sails into 2024 with few changes.
The Telluride’s tweaks last year kept its basic, two-block shape, which looks more like a throwback SUV than a slippery crossover. That’s OK with us; we appreciate its boxy lines, its broad front grille, and its big wheels. It looks great, at least by three-row crossover SUV standards. The X-Line trim level adds chunkier bumpers and a modest ride-height increase, but anyone looking to take the whole fam deep into the woods might want to consider a Jeep Grand Cherokee L instead.
It’s just as nice inside, with a low dash festooned with a crisp 12.3-inch touchscreen. Even base models have nice materials, while the range-topping versions nudge into genuine luxury territory.
If the Telluride has an Achilles heel, it’s the 291-hp 3.8-liter V-6. While smooth and powerful enough to tow as much as 5,500 pounds, this big V-6 lacks any sort of electrification and thus guzzles fuel. It’s rated at just 20 mpg combined with optional all-wheel drive.
Then again, the Telluride’s luxury-grade ride—even with the biggest wheel options—earns our nod. Good steering heft makes it almost fun to drive, too.
The interior can easily swallow four adults in the front and middle rows. Teenagers will be happy enough in row three. The second row is offered with either individual captain’s chairs or a three-piece bench, too.
Top-notch safety scores are augmented by a good array of crash-avoidance tech. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitors come on every Telluride, as do LED exterior lights. A surround-view camera system is optional and worthwhile given the beefy roof pillars.
How much does the 2024 Kia Telluride cost?
The 2024 Kia Telluride LX costs $37,355, including a $1,365 destination fee. Standard features include synthetic leather seats, wireless smartphone mirroring, and good crash-avoidance features. The mid-level $42,955 Telluride EX seems worth the price hike since it adds real leather, power liftgate, power-adjustable front seats, and a few other niceties. A loaded SX-Prestige X-Pro Telluride now costs $54,450.
Where is the 2024 Kia Telluride made?
In West Point, Georgia.
2024 Kia Telluride Styling
Even without glaring SUV clichés, the Telluride stands out in styling.
Is the Kia Telluride a good-looking car?
We give the Telluride an 8 for styling, with two extra points for its handsome exterior and one for its well-finished interior.
The Telluride changes very little for 2024, with amber daytime running lights among the tweaks. That's a good thing, because the Telluride’s cleanly styled SUV proportions blend off-road styling cues with family wagon virtues for a shape that still looks good a few years after its introduction. It remains a paragon of simplicity.
In X-Line trim, increased ride height makes the Telluride look more beefy. With the additional X-Pro package, the blacked-out exterior trim gives it even more swagger.
The Telluride's interior design pays some homage to GMC trucks and even Range Rovers without mimicking them too broadly. Kia now includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen with every Telluride SUV, but it hasn’t buried climate controls in the touchscreen interface. The Telluride’s cabin has a low horizontal theme with delicate rings of metallic trim which organize clusters of switches and knobs into useful pods.
Otherwise, the cabin hasn't changed much over the past few years. It's still clad in synthetic leather on base trims, with real leather available as an upgrade. It’s set apart by its functional but friendly appearance, one that’s distinct from the Hyundai Palisade that shares its architecture.
2024 Kia Telluride Performance
The Telluride remains a serene cruiser, not a fumbly bruiser.
The 2024 Telluride carries over its mechanical gear, including its long wheelbase, its big V-6 engine and its automatic transmission. Even with the biggest 20-inch wheels fitted to almost all the different trim levels, the Telluride has a composed and smooth ride, and strong acceleration. It could be a little bit quicker but the ride quality earns an extra point here for an overall performance rating of 6 out of 10.
Is the Kia Telluride 4WD?
The Telluride comes standard with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive is an option on almost every model. Tellurides with the X-Line and X-Pro packages require all-wheel drive to be configured along with them. Kia’s straightforward all-wheel-drive system can be locked to split power 50:50 between the front and rear ends at speeds of up to 40 mph. On the X-Line and X-Pro Telluride, Kia changes the front and rear ends for better approach and departure angles; that may make it easier to pick its way through off-road trails, but that assumes that a lot of Telluride drivers are using these vehicles for more than great transportation to and from a weekend cabin.
How fast is the Kia Telluride?
The Telluride has a 3.8-liter V-6 engine which delivers 291 hp that wants to be quicker than it is. The engine has to move around more than 4,100 pounds—way more than that once you add on all-wheel drive and anything from the long list of options.
An 8-speed automatic is tuned to keep the big V-6 in check, but it doesn't flick around its gears briskly; as a result the big three-row SUV never feels particularly quick on its feet, and highway passing can take big stabs of throttle. The engine's quiet, even if it doesn't have the refined snarl of something like Honda's V-6s, but it is more smooth than the Subaru Ascent and its turbo-4 engine.
In X-Pro trim the Telluride can tow up to 5,500 pounds.
Where the Telluride excels is in ride quality. It doesn't have adaptive damping like some more pricey SUVs but it has excellent ride control over big bumps and it's serene at highway speeds too, thanks to a lot of sound deadening. The steering tracks cleanly on the highway, with just the right amount of weight. A consistent feel from steering to ride-motion control and moderately strong acceleration lends the Telluride a tightly integrated feel that in turn, can make it seem as if it’s more nimble and quicker than it really is.
2024 Kia Telluride Comfort & Quality
The Telluride sets a high-water mark for three-row SUV comfort and value.
The Telluride has a well-proportioned, spacious, and useful interior that's beautifully trimmed in the higher-end versions. We give it a rating of 9 out of 10 for comfort and quality, thanks to its impressive second- and third-row comfort, its cargo space, and its supportive front seats.
In the base Telluride those front seats adjust manually. That's unusual, compared to some of its rivals and especially since the overall vehicle is so highly enriched with features. The Telluride S gets a power driver seat while other versions that cost more add a power seat on the front passenger side, as well as cooled and heated seats in the front and in the second rows.
The Telluride offers synthetic leather trim with an option for leather; in its SX-Prestige edition, it can be trimmed with nappa leather.
While front seat comfort is excellent, second-row seat comfort might be even better for tall passengers. The Telluride has big rear doors and offers a choice between a three-person bench seat or a pair of captain's chairs. The latter’s where we’d choose to relax during a long road trip, since the second row’s so spacious, with lots of legroom and headroom.
It's in the third row where things get a little cramped for tall people. While the third row is bigger than that of some competition and though its bench seat can accommodate tall passengers for short drives, it's less usable than, say, that in a Honda Pilot.
The Telluride has 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row. Flip and fold the third-row seatbacks out of the way and the Telluride's cargo space blooms to 46 cubic feet. Fold down row two's seats and the Telluride offers up 87 cubic feet of cargo space, a lot smaller than the space in a Pilot, but about the same as you'd find in a Ford Explorer.
Where the Telluride comes into its own is in its interior finishes, particularly in vehicles above the EX grade. Kia fits convincing wood trim and soft quilted leather in the priciest Tellurides—and they do a convincing job of delivering an interior that looks more luxurious than the cabins of some rival vehicles with more prestigious brand names.
2024 Kia Telluride Safety
The Kia Telluride has an excellent crash-test history.
How safe is the Kia Telluride?
Very safe. The NHTSA gives the Telluride a five-star overall rating, while the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick+.
Kia installs a lot of standard crash-avoidance gear in each Telluride. Automatic emergency braking is included, as are adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control. SX-Prestige Tellurides have a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, and the ability to change lanes at the tap of the turn signal.
Like most three-row SUVs, the Telluride’s outward vision gets impeded at the rear by blocky roof pillars—but otherwise, the high seating position rewards even smaller drivers.
2024 Kia Telluride Features
A slight price hike doesn’t tarnish the Telluride’s luster.
We score the 2024 Telluride at a 9 out of 10, with points awarded for its infotainment system, its value, its standard equipment, and its excellent 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.
The base $37,355 Telluride LX comes with LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and five USB ports. All–wheel drive adds $2,000.
The $39,225 Telluride S trim adds a power driver’s seat, 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, and wireless smartphone charging.
Which Kia Telluride should I buy?
We’d go with the Telluride EX. For $42,955, it has heated front seats, leather upholstery, a hands-free power tailgate, and wood trim.
The EX can be configured with X-Line trim, which includes all-wheel drive, a heated steering wheel, roof rails, different 20-inch wheels, and ground clearance of 8.4 inches (up from 8.0 inches).
How much is a fully loaded Kia Telluride?
The $54,450 Telluride SX-Prestige X-Pro comes with everything from nappa leather trim and Harman Kardon audio to a sunroof, heated and cooled second-row seats, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera system.
2024 Kia Telluride Fuel Economy
Without hybrid or electric options, the Telluride’s not very efficient.
Is the Kia Telluride good on gas?
Not really. The EPA scores the front-drive Telluride at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined. With all-wheel drive, it falls to 18/24/20 mpg.
Alternatives like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid sip fuel at a 35-mpg combined rate—there’s potential here, though Kia will sell an electric EV9 SUV next year
