The 2024 Lexus GX finally feels modern and leans into being a true SUV while downplaying the luxury side of things.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Lexus GX? What does it compare to?
The Lexus GX 550 is a luxury SUV with two or three rows of seats and real off-road capability. It competes with the Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Defender, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Is the 2024 Lexus GX a good SUV?
The GX 550 is redesigned for 2024 with a turbocharged powertrain, a forthcoming hybrid model and a more off-road focused Overtrail model. The upgrades improve on its predecessor’s TCC Rating of 4.8 out of 10 bringing it to 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Lexus GX?
Everything right down to the frame. The frame is a modified version of what underpins the latest Lexus LX 600, Toyota Tundra pickup truck, Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV, and Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup.
The GX continues to be a body-on-frame SUV, though now it’s available with either a second-row bench seat and seating for seven or captain’s chairs that limits the total seating capacity to six passengers. A third row is standard on all but the off-road Overtrail model, which comes only as a five seater with a second-row bench seat. It’s 3.7 inches wider, 2.8 inches longer, and rides on a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor.
Lexus leaned into the chiseled, blocky, traditional upright SUV profile with the latest GX. The front looks like a pinched version of the larger LX thanks to its narrower dimensions, but the side takes on a character of its own with a strong shoulder line that kicks up as it goes into the punched-out rear fender. The rear end is squared off like a Land Rover and features a full-width LED tailight. The tailgate no longer opens to the side and now swings up like other SUVs, and the rear glass pops open independently for cargo access. Overtrail models roll on chunkier 33-inch tires and 18-inch wheels.
Inside the GX goes digital with a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.0-inch touchscreen. The dashboard still features a horizontal design motif, but has been lowered for better forward vision. Off-road controls are grouped on the center console by the shifter. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard while a head-up display is available.
The tried-and-true V-8 engine is gone. Initially the GX is only offered with a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 rated at 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. With a 10-speed automatic transmission, every GX features full-time four-wheel drive with a lockable Torsen center differential and 2-speed transfer case. Overtrail models add a rear locking differential for slippier situations while an electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) disconnects the sway bars for increased articulation. Every GX features a tow receiver and can tow at least 7,601 pounds..
Fuel economy ratings check in at a wince-inducing 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 combined, which barely improve on the outgoing V-8.
A hybrid is said to be on the way, but Lexus hasn’t provided any details or timing.
The GX rides and handles better than before thanks to a new double-wishbone front suspension, a multilink rear suspension, a longer wheelbase by 2.4 inches, and a 3.7-inch wider stance. Adaptive dampers are available, but an air suspension system is not.
Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control are standard. A surround-view camera system is available.
How much does the 2024 Lexus GX cost?
Lexus offers the 2024 GX in six trims, including Premium, Premium+, Overtrail, Overtrail+, Luxury, and Luxury+. The Lexus GX checks in at a value compared to its Land Rover rival with a base price of $64,250, including a $1,350 destination charge.
The 2024 GX 550 comes with up to 12 cupholders (depending on the trim), six charging ports (only four on Overtrail), a 120-volt AC inverter, and a 10-speaker audio system. A wireless smartphone charger and 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system are available.
Where is the 2024 Lexus GX made?
The 2024 Lexus GX is made in the automaker’s Tahara plant in Japan.
2024 Lexus GX Styling
The 2024 Lexus GX features an SUV bod.
Is the Lexus GX a good-looking car?
The 2024 Lexus GX isn’t cosplaying an SUV, it’s fully embracing it with slab-sided sheet metal and upright proportions inside and out, earning it two extra points for a 7 out of 10 for its styling score.
If much thought was given to aerodynamics it’s not visually apparent. A Toyota Land Cruiser in a suit, the GX looks sharp and ready to hit the trails or Starbucks. The Lexus spindle grille and headlights are really the only tell tale sign the GX is even a Lexus. The upright rectangular mirrors look straight off a Toyota FJ. Off-road Overtail models look butch with their 33-inch all-terrain rubber pushed out to the corners under the bulging fenders.
Inside the upright dashboard is short and mounted close to the windshield. It’s functional and groups the off-road controls together for when adventure calls. The standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster can be washed out in direct sunlight, and the 14.0-inch touchscreen lacks the ability to split screen. Hope everyone likes a huge map. The controls are easier to use than the layered setup in the Land Rover Defender. It’ll take stepping up to the mid-trim Luxury model to swap synthetic leather for real cow hides.
2024 Lexus GX Performance
The 2024 Lexus GX finally gets with the modern age while maintaining its off-road capability.
The 2024 Lexus GX rates a much improved 7 out of 10 for performance. It’s incredibly capable off-road, is quicker than ever despite losing cylinders, and is rated to tow an astonishing amount.
Is the Lexus GX 4WD?
Yes. A permanent four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case is standard fare along with a locking center differential. Off-road Overtail models take things to the extreme with a locking rear differential, electronically disconnecting sway bars for more articulation, and off-road driving modes with systems that act like off-road cruise control.
How fast is the Lexus GX?
Compared to the old models, the latest GX is pretty darn quick. Lexus said the twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 rated at 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque will sprint the SUV from 0-60 mph in about 6.5 seconds. The turbo-6 hooks up to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission.
The engine can moan at times, but it packs more punch that the old 301-hp V-8. The turbos spool quickly, but then wind down and the engine does an admirable job of staying out of the boost most of the time. Boost drinks gas.
Compared to the outgoing GX the latest iteration feels lighter on its rubber feet. The steering is light, but not over-boosted or sloppy. The GX doesn’t ride like the truck that it is despite being a body-on-frame SUV. Nobody will mistake this for a Grand Cherokee or Land Rover Defender, but the sum of its parts ride better than its truck-based siblings in Toyota’s lineup. Base Premium and Premium+ models ride on passive dampers and 20-inch wheels to deliver a comfortable and mostly controlled ride. Around corners there’s noticeable body lean. Luxury-oriented Luxury and Luxury+ models get larger 22-inch wheels and adaptive dampers that soften the ride in Comfort mode and firm things up in Sport and Sport+. Off-road Overtrail and Overtrail+ models are the most comfortable thanks to their smaller 18-inch wheels and larger 33-inch all-terrain tires paired with adaptive dampers that combine to absorb road imperfections.
How much can the GX tow?
Originally expected to tow 8,000 pounds, Lexus recertified the GX with a tow rating of up to 9,063 pounds. Luxury+ models have the lowest tow rating at 7,601 pounds, due to their larger and heavier 22-inch wheels and more amenities adding weight.
We’ve towed 5,000 pounds of fiberglass walleye boat with a Premium+ model rated to tow 9,041 pounds. The GX instilled confidence behind the wheel despite the load attached to the rear end. While the presence of a trailer was always felt, the GX was in control of the situation, even during most passing maneuvers. Tow Mode locked out the top two gears from the transmission to ensure the engine stayed in the power band. The powertrain managed to mostly stay out of the boost with the turbos resting the majority of the road trip except for when strong acceleration was called upon. It’s hard to imagine towing 9,000 pounds with the GX, but knowing it’s rated for such high loads instills confidence when hooking up lighter loads.
2024 Lexus GX Comfort & Quality
The GX features lots of cabin space, but it feels cheap and doesn’t deliver the luxury experience one expects with the Lexus badge.
We rate it an 8 out of 10 thanks to good front and second-row space and a large cargo area, but it misses out on points for that feeling of luxury and third-row space.
The front seat is the best in the house with supportive thrones and plenty of legroom. Luxury+ and Overtrail+ models get massaging front seats, but the controls for these are buried in the touchscreen. Opting for the massaging front seats eat into the 36.7 inches of second-row legroom.
The standard bench seat is our preference despite being a bit flat. The available captain’s chairs have airplane-like flip down armrests that are harder to get a comfortable position with. The seat bottoms hug the rear axle and create a stadium-style seating arrangement. This places the second-row occupants higher than those seated in front.
Every GX except the Overtrail model features a small third row with 32 inches of legroom. It’s hard to access and not comfortable. It’s decidedly the kid zone for short trips.
WIth the third row folded, there’s 40.2 cubic feet of space, but it’s not completely flat. The floor slopes toward the rear of the vehicle as the third row attempts to fold itself onto the solid rear axle. With the third row up, cargo space drops to 10.3 cubic feet. The rear bumper is low, making for a nice, low, liftover height.
The cargo area no longer swings out but instead the tailgate flips up, like most other SUVs on the market. The rear glass can still pop up to put stuff in the back without opening the rear tailgate, but it’s a tall lift to get over the sheetmetal.
2024 Lexus GX Safety
Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has smashed a GX into a wall, yet.
How safe is the Lexus GX?
It’s finally based on a modern structure and features all the expected active safety technology of a luxury vehicle, but we don’t know how well the 2024 Lexus GX will hold up in crash testing. For that reason, we can’t assign a safety score.
Every 2024 Lexus GX comes with advanced safety tech including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitors. A surround-view camera system and head-up display are available.
2024 Lexus GX Features
The 2024 Lexus GX comes with big screens and good hardware for foul weather.
The base GX 550 costs $64,250 including a $1,350 destination charge to start, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 14.0-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, synthetic leather, a sunroof, a towing receiver, and 20-inch alloy wheels. The wealth of standard features, array of options, and big touchscreen earn points here to an 8.
Every Lexus GX benefits from a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
Which Lexus GX should I buy?
Anyone looking to go off-road or be prepared for the worst weather will spend an extra $5,000 over the base model to jump into an Overtrail trim. This will net a locking rear differential, off-road drive modes, and downsize the wheels to 18s while wrapping them in 33-inch all-terrain rubber.
For everyone else, the Premium+ with a few cold-weather options and a 10.7-inch head-up display makes sense for $70,350.
This still undercuts a comparable Land Rover Defender by thousands. Annoyingly, the Mark Levinson 21-speaker audio system isn’t an available option until stepping up to the $77,250 Luxury trim, where it’s a $1,140 option.
How much is a fully loaded Lexus GX?
That’ll be the GX 550 Luxury+ kitted out with leather-trimmed seats that have heating, cooling, and massaging up front, along with the a Cold Area Package, a head-up display, a tonneau cover for the rear cargo area, second-row captains chairs, and a digital key all for $83,895.
2024 Lexus GX Fuel Economy
The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is thirsty.
Is the Lexus GX good on gas?
In a word, no. The 2024 GX rates at 1 out of 10 due to EPA estimates of 15 mpg city, 21 highway, 17 combined. And premium fuel is required. Notably, these figures barely moved from the outgoing V-8 with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
