While we await the Toyota Land Cruiser’s 2024 return, the Lexus LX holds its own with Land Rover and Mercedes in terms of tech and luxury.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Lexus LX? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Lexus LX 600 is a three-row luxury SUV that competes against the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Land Rover Range Rover.
Is the 2024 Lexus LX a good SUV?
The Lexus LX delivers a big cabin with plenty of features, a smooth ride, and character to spare. It’s good for a TCC Rating of 6.4 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Lexus LX?
The Lexus LX 600 carries over unchanged for 2024, in base, Premium, F Sport, Luxury, and Ultra Luxury trims.
The LX is essentially a luxury version of the old Toyota Land Cruiser, which was discontinued in the U.S. after 2021 but will make a return for 2024. It’s big and blocky, and rides on a 112.0-inch wheelbase carefully chosen for its off-road capability. The beefy body wears distinctive Lexus design cues with various degrees of success; for example, the big fender flares and side profile lines are more effective at communicating capability and intent than the front grille, which cascades nearly to the pavement.
The cabin focuses more on passenger comfort than on capability, with controls for suspension settings and drive modes less prominent than the 12.3-inch touchscreen, climate control display, and various luxury features. The LX offers fewer bespoke interior options than some rivals, but there are still enough choices on the menu to satisfy expensive tastes.
The LX comes standard with five seats, though most configurations include a kid-friendly third row. In Ultra Luxury guise, the second-row bench is swapped out for swanky captain’s chairs and there’s no third row. Despite the LX’s imposing size and height—with ground clearance of about nine inches—the cabin isn’t actually all that spacious for passengers or cargo. It’s beautifully designed, though, and build quality is impressive.
The LX 600’s name bears no relation to its powertrain, the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 found in Toyota’s Tundra. A standard 10-speed automatic transmission sends 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque to all four corners, and despite the LX’s significant heft, its finely-tuned steering may tempt drivers to push it in all the wrong places. The ride is soft, but composed.
Off-road capability will satisfy most, though it’s better to stick with 18-inch wheels instead of the available 22-inch wheels. Gas mileage is miserable by nearly any standard, though it’s better than past generations of the LX.
Though the Lexus LX isn’t evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS, Lexus supplies automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, park assist with automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
How much does the 2024 Lexus LX cost?
The 2024 Lexus LX 600 costs $92,915 including a $1,350 destination charge in base trim. That includes a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a separate climate control display, leather upholstery, a sunroof, and active safety features. The Premium adds an adaptive suspension, a power-folding third row, and a power liftgate for about $8,000 more, which we think is the best overall value. The Ultra Luxury, $133,490, delivers on the name with premium leather and audio and second-row captain’s chairs flanking a center console.
Where is the 2024 Lexus LX made?
Lexus builds the LX in Japan.
2024 Lexus LX Styling
A masculine exterior and elegant interior make a mixed styling statement for the Lexus LX.
Is the Lexus LX a good-looking car?
The 2024 Lexus LX wears a front spindle grille comprised of razor-like blades stacked from the pavement to the hood. It’s distinctive, if not especially attractive. It earns a point for the interior, though, for a 6.
If that tacky grille is a deal-breaker, it can be toned down with the black appearance package or F Sport trim. The Lexus LX is otherwise a conventional SUV shape with a muscular two-box design devoid of any attempt to be trendy. It’s not subtle or nuanced, but the look is elegant, particularly the way the wheel wells frame those big alloys. That said, the no-cost optional 18-inch wheels provide the best ride and the best off-road capability.
Inside, the LX is busy, with tons of digital real estate made up of a high-mounted 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch climate control display, and extraneous buttons and knobs. Choose carefully from the big list of interior options to help tone down the visual clutter and emphasize the LX’s inherent luxury.
2024 Lexus LX Performance
With a refined suspension and potent turbocharged powertrain, the 2024 Lexus LX 600 basks in the glow of Toyota’s venerable Land Cruiser legacy.
On paper, the Lexus LX might not be particularly impressive, though its components work together harmoniously, both off- and on-road. With a great ride and handling and the twin-turbocharged V-6, the LX earns a 7 here.
Is the Lexus LX 4WD?
Yup. The LX features a permanent four-wheel-drive system that can tackle challenging terrain thanks to its low range, and it’s aided by terrain settings, hill descent control, and optional adjustable suspension.
For the best off-road setup, opt for the 18-inch wheels, which are available only by paying extra for a blacked-out exterior styling package; the LX’s standard wheels don’t have adequate sidewall protection for rocky terrain. Mind the low front bumper and side running boards that are bigger obstacles to the LX’s capability than any of its mechanical features.
How fast is the Lexus LX?
It’s not fast, but it is powerful, with 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque from its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6. That’s plenty, but the LX weighs a not-insignificant 5,700 pounds or so.
The LX is eager enough off the line, with enough power in reserve for easy passing. The 10-speed transmission does a decent job of allocating power, though it occasionally fumbles through low gears. Selectable drive modes tune shift points and throttle response for a peppier experience.
The LX’s heft contributes to a smooth ride, though the available adaptive suspension system is a better choice to overcome the combination of big wheels with thin rubber. LX F Sport models get a rear limited-slip differential and slightly sportier tuning, though it’s hardly intended for weekend trips to the track.
2024 Lexus LX Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Lexus LX has a comfortable and upscale cabin, though it’s short on cargo space.
The Lexus LX impresses with its beautiful and welcoming cabin, as long as you’re not stuck in the third row. It’s a 9, with points for first-row and second-row space, general cargo utility, and impressive fit and finish.
The LX comes standard with heated front seats with tons of power adjustments, and all trims above the base model get cooling, as well. The second-row bench is nicely padded and offers about 37 inches of legroom. Ultra Luxury versions swap in a pair of captain’s chairs instead, with touchscreen controls for heating, cooling, and massage, and a pair of 11.4-inch entertainment displays. Soft materials and elegant wood trim are found throughout the cabin.
Five-passenger models get 44.0 cubic feet of cargo space, which opens up to 64.0 cubic feet with the seats folding down. Three-row versions allocate nearly all cargo space to the rear bench.
2024 Lexus LX Safety
Lexus equips the 2024 LX with a good array of safety tech.
How safe is the Lexus LX?
The NHTSA and the IIHS haven’t crash-tested the LX, so we can’t award a score.
Between its bulk and its array of standard safety features, though, the LX should be a reasonably safe pick.
The LX comes standard with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, a surround-view camera system, blind-spot monitors, and automatic high-beam headlights.
2024 Lexus LX Features
The 2024 Lexus LX is expensive, but its amenities are impressive.
The Lexus LX starts at $92,915 including a $1,350 destination charge. It’s a 9, with points awarded for good standard features, a big touchscreen with user-friendly infotainment, tons of options, and a competitive 4-year/50,000-mile warranty that includes two years of scheduled maintenance.
Standard features include seating for five, leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, LED lighting, a sunroof, and driver-assistance tech.
Which Lexus LX should I buy?
If the third row isn’t necessary, stick with the base trim.
For the third row, start with the $100,865 Premium. You’ll also get a hands-free power tailgate and an adaptive suspension system that significantly improves ride and handling. A $1,300 package offers blacked-out exterior styling and the option for smaller, but more off-road friendly 18-inch wheels.
How much is a fully loaded Lexus LX?
The Ultra Luxury model costs $133,490 and includes posh seating for four passengers with premium leather upholstery, heating and cooling, and massage. Second-row passengers also get their own center console, touchscreen controls, and entertainment displays. This model also gets a 25-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and 22-inch alloy wheels.
2024 Lexus LX Fuel Economy
Premium fuel goes fast in the 2024 Lexus LX.
Is the Lexus LX good on gas?
No, it’s actually terrible, with EPA ratings of 17 mpg city, 22 highway, 19 combined. That’s a 1 on our scale.
Some rivals, like the Range Rover, are available as a hybrid, and a battery electric version of the Cadillac Escalade arrives next year. Those aren’t options on the Lexus LX 600.
