The 2025 Mazda CX-5 makes for a stylish and fun commuter, though it can get pretty expensive.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Mazda CX-5? What does it compare to?
The 2025 CX-5 is a five-seat compact crossover SUV. Compare it to Mazda’s own, fresher CX-50, plus the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage among myriad other rivals.
Is the 2025 Mazda CX-5 a good SUV?
It’s a pleasant vehicle with nice styling and a reasonably spacious interior, plus it is more fun to drive than most competitors. But the CX-5 is practically vintage now, and some of its design quirks hold it to a TCC Rating of 6.3 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Mazda CX-5?
The base S trim level returns after a one-year hiatus, which helps nudge the CX-5’s price of entry to $29,990, including destination. Otherwise, the lineup sees minor adjustments to features on each trim level.
The CX-5 is now something of a classic in the lineup, with a design that is now in its ninth model year without a major update. It wears more upright proportions than the sleeker CX-50, but the two have similar features and powertrains.
Despite its age, the CX-5 still looks pretty good inside and out with its big shield of a grille and birdlike headlights giving way to fairly tall side profile. Inside, it’s stylish and modern, although the hard-to-reach touchscreen Mazda uses has software that significantly trails most rivals. Top Signature versions are outfitted like luxury cars inside with their nappa leather and real wood, though unfortunately they’re priced at that level as well.
Mazda offers the CX-5 with two powertrains: a 2.5-liter inline-4 that makes 187-hp and 186 lb-ft of torque or a 2.5-liter turbo-4 that makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft (256 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel). Either way, they shift power to all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. The turbo is noticeably peppier, but we’re not sure we’d spend up for it. Fuel economy figures in the 24- to 28-mpg combined range are a little below average for the segment; the CX-50 is hurt by the lack of a hybrid option.
Mazda fits all-wheel drive to all CX-5s, though these are definitely not off-roaders. They are fun to drive in their own way, though, with good steering heft and a firm suspension that gives them a nimble, planted feel.
The CX-5’s stylish interior has comfortable front seats and reasonable cargo space, plus great materials. It’s not so spacious for rear-seat riders, though. They’ll find decent headroom but not much legroom.
All CX-5s have a good set of standard crash-avoidance and driver-assistance features including blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The IIHS gave last year’s model a Top Safety Pick award, while the NHTSA agreed with its five-star rating.
How much does the 2025 Mazda CX-5 cost?
The base CX-5 2.5 S runs $29,990, which nets cloth upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a decent array of driver-assistance tech including blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control.
The lineup climbs fast from there to well north of $40,000 for a loaded-up turbo model. The best buys here are in the bottom two or three trims; shop wisely and you can get leather seats, a sunroof, and a power tailgate for around $35,000.
Where is the 2025 Mazda CX-5 made?
In Japan.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Styling
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is graying at its temples, but it still looks great.
Is the Mazda CX-5 a good-looking car?
It’s no George Clooney in its ability to age with grace, but the 2025 Mazda CX-5 still looks great nearly a decade after this design first debuted at the 2016 Los Angeles auto show. Its proportions are terrific, its detailing lovely, and its minimal but not basic interior is a charmer. We score the CX-5 at 8 out of 10.
The broad front grille surrounded by a purposeful and yet somehow delicate band of brightwork looks great here. It’s flanked by small bird-like headlights that integrate beautifully into subtly curved fenders. The CX-5 has a somewhat tall greenhouse compared to some of the automaker’s fresher designs, which works great for outward vision and gives it an elegant shape.
The base 17-inch alloy wheels look a bit small in the big wheel wells, though they’re wrapped in tires with more sidewall than what you’ll find in the tall 19-inchers. Vanity or ride quality, your choice.
The cabin features a 10.3-inch touchscreen that sits low on the dash. There are plenty of buttons and knobs, but they’re nicely organized and fairly easy to sort through.
While Mazda doesn’t offer a lot of interior color variation in each trim levels, overall there are some appealing choices here. We particularly like the Carbon Edition’s brown leather, while the nappa hides and real wood in the top Signature are particularly nice.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Performance
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 exhibits impressive balance.
The Mazda CX-5 has a fun-to-drive nature with a taut ride and quick, somewhat hefty steering. If only it was quicker. Its ride/handling balance nets it a point here for a 6 on the TCC scale.
Is the Mazda CX-5 4WD?
Yes, all CX-5s are all-wheel drive, though they’re meant more for inclement weather than for any semblance of off-roading.
How fast is the Mazda CX-5?
Base versions are all right in town and have a bit in reserve for highway passing. The 2.5-liter inline-4 musters 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque through a smooth 6-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, this engine can snarl and growl on occasion, particularly before it warms up. It can get loud when pressed, as well.
Still, we’re not sure it’s worth the big extra cost to get the turbo, which needs premium fuel to make its full 256 hp. It’ll put out 227 hp on regular unleaded, which isn’t enough to justify the extra cost. Still, with 310 lb-ft of torque, it’s clearly the performance champ here. It’s far more impressive at highway speeds than the base engine, even if there’s some lag before the turbo spools up.
No matter what’s underhood, the CX-5 has a sportier driving experience than its direct rivals. Its steering has quite a bit of heft and a granular feel that recalls some sports cars, including Mazda’s own Miata. While it definitely plows into corners when pushed and has plenty of body lean, the CX-5’s athletic responses definitely make it more entertaining than its peer group.
It rides far better on the standard 17-inch alloy wheels than the 19-inchers fitted to most trim levels. Those bigger wheels also transmit way more noise into the cabin.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Comfort & Quality
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 has a lovely cabin, so long as you’re in the front seats or the cargo area.
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 has a pretty interior, but it’s not very spacious for rear-seat passengers. We rate it at 7 out of 10 thanks to good front seats and a fairly big cargo area.
The front seats are manually adjustable on the base version but power adjustments arrive for the driver at the next step up the ladder and for the passenger on the third-lowest trim. They’re pretty comfy, and most versions have heated front seats, too.
On paper, the rear seats have 40.0 inches of legroom, but someone should check Mazda’s tape measure. Tight door openings are an ominous start. There’s definitely not enough room for three abreast, and real-world legroom trails such spacious rivals as the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester.
The 31 cubic-foot cargo area is pretty good, and it grows to about double that when the rear seat backs are folded down.
The CX-5 has nice interior materials, even if only a handful of trims break out of the all-black or way-too-white interior hues that Mazda seems to love. That said, real leather finds its way into the lineup on just the third trim level, while the fanciest CX-5 has soft nappa hides and genuine wood.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Safety
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 has an impressive crash-test record.
How safe is the Mazda CX-5?
The Mazda CX-5 earned a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA. It gets a point for each of those scores, plus another for its impressive crash-safety tech. It’s an 8 on the TCC scale.
The CX-5 comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Features
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 can be a good value, so long as you choose wisely among its myriad trim levels.
Mazda packs a decent amount of safety and convenience features into the 2025 CX-5, but its infotainment software is so cumbersome that we dock it a point. It’s a 6 on our scale.
The 2025 CX-5 is offered in a wide range of trim levels, albeit with some confusing names. The lineup starts at $29,990 in base 2.5 S trim, which has 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seats, crash-avoidance tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10.3-inch touchscreen. It’s not lavish, but it’s an acceptable value for the money. All-wheel drive is also standard across the range.
The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is nothing special, though.
Note that non-turbo and turbo versions have similar names, but they don’t necessarily mirror each other.
Which Mazda CX-5 should I buy?
We’d bypass the base model for the 2.5 S Select with its power-adjustable driver’s seat, tinted rear windows, synthetic leather, proximity keyless entry, more speakers, rear-seat climate control vents and USB ports, and other niceties. It’s only $1,300 more, anyway.
If you’re after something a bit dressier, the 2.5 S Preferred has a sunroof, a power tailgate, leather seats with memory for the driver, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a garage door opener. It’s priced at $32,670, which undercuts premium rivals.
From there, the CX-5 winds its way through two more non-turbo models. You’ll need at least $38,420 for the cheapest version with a turbo, the 2.5 Turbo Carbon Edition. That’s a lot of cash, but it’s pretty well-equipped with wireless smartphone mirroring, heated and cooled front seats, a surround-view camera system, 19-inch alloy wheels, and brown leather seats.
How much is a fully loaded Mazda CX-5?
Mazda offers two other turbo models, culminating in the 2.5 Turbo Signature at a heady $42,020. That said, with its nappa leather seats, real wood trim, navigation, and head-up display, it’s nicely outfitted. But it’s also priced near some genuine luxury models.
2025 Mazda CX-5 Fuel Economy
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is reasonably thrifty, but the turbo version needs costly premium fuel to be at its best.
Is the Mazda CX-5 good on gas?
It’s fine for an all-wheel-drive crossover, but not at the top of its class. Based on the 2024 model, we rate the 2025 CX-5 at 3 out of 10 here. Base models are estimated at 26 mpg city, 31 highway, 28 combined, while higher-end versions with bigger wheels slip to 23/29/25 mpg.
The turbo version isn’t that much thirstier, but it needs costly premium fuel to make the most out of its powertrain. It’s estimated at 22/27/24 mpg.
