Subtlety be damned, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is a serious off-roader for those who may choose to explore its abilities.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class? What does it compare to?
The G-Class is a five-seat SUV with boxy styling that’s reminiscent of the late-1970s original, only it packs substantial punch, modern tech, and an eye-popping pricetag.
Is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good SUV?
Most of us would be far better served by a Mercedes-Benz GLE or GLS, but the classic G-Wagen is a fun, high-personality choice with commendable performance and horrendous fuel economy. It’s a 6.2 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
Ahead of a revamp planned for early 2025, the G-Class sees no tweaks this year.
The Geländewagen, which translates to “cross-country vehicle" in German, dates back to 1979, though it wasn’t officially sold here until 2002. (A small importer in New Mexico that popularized the G via gray-market imports up until then can be at least partially credited with the current model’s swagger.)
Its blocky, intentionally retro looks only date to 2019, when a thorough redesign brought forth the current model. It may look old-school, but the G is thoroughly modern inside. Twin 12.3-inch screens under a single pane of glass meet Benz standards, as do myriad trim and color combos.
The G 550’s 416-hp V-8 boasts twin turbochargers for more than enough acceleration. It’s overshadowed by the 577-hp AMG G 63, though. If you’re going to spend this much, why not keep going, after all?
Each G-Wagen has an off-road-ready suspension with three locking differentials, but you may want to swap the AMG’s street tires for all-terrains if you’re heading into the muck. Or, grab the G 63 4x4^2—that’s really its name—with its sky-high suspension and portal-style axles that offer astounding ground clearance. We’ve never seen a dirty one, though.
Inside, the G-Class isn’t as well-configured as a Range Rover, but it’s still plenty plush for four passengers, or five in a pinch. Don’t look for a third row. That’s where the GLS comes in.
All models have a good array of crash-avoidance tech, plus these big bruisers have mass on their side.
How much does the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class cost?
Figure around $145,000 to start, though myriad options beckon. The G 63 is a hefty $40,000 or so more with its uprated power, stiffer suspension, bigger wheels, and various trim tweaks.
Where is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class made?
In Austria.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Styling
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class brims with old-school charm.
Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good-looking SUV?
Do you like exposed door hinges, boxy lines, black trim, and a tailgate-mounted spare tire? If so, Mercedes-Benz has the SUV for you. We dig it inside and out, granting the G-Class a 7 on the TCC scale.
Mercedes did a great job staying true to this model’s vintage heritage when it revamped the lineup back in 2019. Those classic two-box proportions remain, as do details throughout that seem downright anachronistic by 2024 standards. Big fender flares, tacked-on running boards, and a chrome brush guard all seem like products of the 1990s—because, uh, they are.
The G 63 doesn’t look much different than the standard G 550, aside from its wheels. But the G 63 4x4^2’s big wheel and tire setup, and its massive ground clearance, make it look more like a toy truck than a real one.
Inside, the G’s design themes are lifted right out of the S-Class lineup, except they have to contend with a narrow body. You won’t find many vintage cues here, but you will find lots of upholstery and trim choices.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Performance
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class stands ready to conquer any kind of terrain.
Few new SUVs are as flexible as the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Sure, it’s not as pavement-friendly as any other SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, but it’s quick and it even rides fairly well. We rate the G at 7 out of 10 thanks to its prodigious power and its impressive off-road ability.
Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4WD?
Mercedes-Benz is as unlikely to offer a two-wheel-drive G-Class as Mazda is to offer an off-roady Miata.
This big SUV has three differential locks, a solid rear axle, and plentiful ground clearance, which give it astounding off-road ability. There’s no longer a flexy solid front axle, but a high-zoot traction control system ensures that those wheels still in touch with the ground will do their best to maintain forward momentum.
Interestingly, Mercedes largely eschews other off-road tricks. Don’t look for crawl control or a full bevy of terrain-specific controls here. Mercedes figures drivers will know what they’re doing.
If you actually plan to go off-road, the G 550’s softer suspension and available 18-inch wheels make it a better choice than the standard G 63, though there’s a Trail package for the G 63 that comes with slightly smaller 20-inch wheels and some minor suspension tweaks.
The G 63 4x4^2 is its own beast, though. Its portal axles ensure that the otherwise low-hanging differentials are tucked up high, providing for massive ground clearance. That’s military-grade tech, all with a classy leather cabin and a $350,000-plus pricetag. Its mere existence is astounding.
How fast is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
It’s quick. The G 550’s 416-hp twin-turbo V-8 spools up for rapid acceleration. Far faster—figure 4.5 seconds to 60 mph—is the AMG G 63 with its 577-hp version of that engine. On either, the 9-speed automatic transmission behaves brilliantly. Big brakes bring this hefty SUV to a quick stop, too.
All models have an independent front suspension and a solid rear axle with coil springs. This setup seems like nothing special when you review the spec sheet, but it’s well tuned for a comfortable on-road ride while retaining plenty of off-road capability. Still, the G leans prodigiously into corners when pushed hard. There’s only so much that Mercedes-Benz can do to keep it upright, after all. G 63 models have adjustable adaptive dampers that help quell body lean, and they ride on big 21-inch wheels in most configurations.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a dramatic affair inside.
Big, comfy, and decadent, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a solid 9 out of 10 on our scale thanks to the way it accommodates passengers and their gear in a stylish manner. It’s not a 10, though, as its narrow body/high roof design gives it some awkward proportions compared to the more conventional GLS.
That said, the G balances classic design with modern touches throughout. Look for gorgeous leather and a choice of dozens of interior trim combinations ranging from warm brown to spicy green.
The front seats have power adjustment, heating, and cooling, while rear-seat riders will find decent leg room and a comfortable bench.
The hinged cargo door swings away from a curb to reveal 37.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which grows substantially to 79.5 cubes when the rear seatbacks are folded. Those boxy lines help endow the G with a massive cargo area for its relatively small size. It’s almost a foot shorter than a Lexus LX, for instance.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Safety
The G-Wagen’s active safety suite is largely optional.
How safe is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
Tipping the scales north of 6,000 pounds once passengers and fuel are loaded up, the 2024 G-Class is a heavy beast. That mass likely works in its favor, though neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has tested one. Given its sky-high pricetag and limited availability, it’s not likely to be tested any time soon, either.
Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, while nearly everything else is optional. You’ll pay extra for adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, advanced parking assist, and a surround-view camera system.
The view out is generally very good, though the high fenders can hide cars that are in close proximity.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Features
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes well-equipped, as it should for these prices.
The G-Wagen’s pricing is hardly retro, though neither is its feature set. The lineup begins north of $140,000 for a G 550 with standard leather trim, power-adjustable and heated seats up front, a sunroof, two 12.3-inch displays, and wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.
Standard equipment, big screens, and numerous customization options each earn it points, but we dock one for value.
The automaker’s 4-year/50,000-mile warranty is luxury-segment typical, but should include some service at this price.
Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class should I buy?
We’re probably not going to talk you out of whatever G-Wagen configuration you’re after, but the best advice we can offer is to look closely at all the trim options Mercedes-Benz offers. The G-Wagen can go from tasteful to tasteless with a quickness.
Our money would be on the G 550, which is plenty quick, though we’d add massaging seats and active safety tech that can push its price to $160,000.
The G 63 starts at around $181,000 with its upsized wheels, various styling tweaks, and hefty increase to 577 hp. Toss in extra-cost paint, 22-inch forged wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, carbon fiber interior trim, way more leather, and various other features, and you’re looking at a $215,000-or-so pricetag. And that’s if you can get one at retail.
How much is a fully loaded Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
The wild G 63 4x4^2 runs $350,000, a price that’s impossible to justify right until you draw your first crowd in a parking lot.
2024 Mercedes-Benz G Class Fuel Economy
Good mpg in a G-Class? LOL.
Of course it isn’t. The G 550 is estimated at 13 mpg city, 16 highway, 14 combined. G 63s are marginally worse at 13/16/14 mpg, while the 4x4^2 will inevitably be worse.
