The Mercedes-Benz SL is a great everyday sports car with ascending levels of power constrained only by how big your budget is.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class? What does it compare to?
The SL is the perfect car for a Sunday drive. It’s a svelte 2+2 convertible that competes with the BMW 8-Series, Porsche 911, and Chevrolet Corvette.
Is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class a good car?
It’s a great everyday sports car with lots of power, sporty handling, and sleek looks. It’s six figures from the get-go, though, and while there’s a backseat it’s not really usable. The SL earns a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class?
The big news for 2024 is the addition of the monstrous AMG SL 63 E Performance plug-in hybrid model. It teams the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 from the SL 63 with a 194-hp electric motor on the rear axle for a total of 805 hp and a small electric driving range. Otherwise, 2024 SLs get an AMG crest above the grille, and add three new exterior colors and two new interior color combinations.
The new top-line model joins an SL 43 base model that was added mid-2023, as well as SL 55 and SL 63 models. All sport a low-slung, wide, and rounded take on the classic long hood, short deck proportions of a sports car. It’s a 2+2 but it still looks like a roadster with the top up because the soft top hides the small rear seat. With several layers of cloth and a glass rear window, the top seals off the interior well, blocking out sound for the luxury experience Mercedes buyers expect.
The cabin is roomy for two and very snug for anyone who might venture into the back seat. The dash has a rounded look like the fenders. A pair of digital screens provide infotainment and driving information, and some available two-tone cabin colors brighten the ambience.
The engines start with a 375-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes the SL quick. The step up is a twin-turbo V-8 that produces either 469 or 577 hp and contributes mightily to the big horsepower number of the SL 63 S E Performance.
All SLs have sharp moves, but an available linked hydraulic suspension fights body lean to improve the car’s agility. Available rear-wheel steering also makes it more stable during fast cornering.
Mercedes makes plenty of safety features standard but leaves a few important ones, such as adaptive cruise control and active lane control, as options. Among the standard features are automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, automatic parking, and a surround-view camera system.
How much does the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class cost?
The SL 43, added in the middle of 2023, brings the starting price to about $110,000, and the addition of the SL 63 S E Performance likely pushes the price past $200,000. Go for a V-8 and the excellent hydraulic suspension, and expect to pay about $150,000.
Where is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class made?
In Germany.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Styling
The SL wears its sporty looks with elegance.
Is the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class a good-looking car?
Though a 2+2, the SL retains the traditional roadster look. It’s rounded, low, wide, and graceful on the outside and sporty and inviting on the inside, the SL is a gorgeous car outside with a cleanly styled cabin. That earns it an 8 here.
The SL is fronted by triangular headlights that point down toa wide grille, which Mercedes calls the Panamericana design, to form a scowl. Large air intakes at the lower corners suggest serious power is under the long hood, which there is. In the profile view, the cabin is pushed back and a short, rounded trunk plays off the rounded design of the front and rear renders. It all comes together to create a sleek, graceful, sporty look.
The cabin combines luxury with technology and sportiness. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen provide the tech, while nappa leather upholstery on sculpted seats, plus aluminum and available carbon-fiber trim, provide the sportiness and luxury. The design is simple, with a rounded dash sporting four turbine-shaped air vents, a wide center console, and a low seating position that creates a bathtub feel. The design gets more interesting in the combination of lighter and darker colors available with some upholstery choices.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Performance
The SL is fast and agile.
The SL combines sporty moves and power that starts out strong and progresses from there. A comfortable ride also makes it easy to live with every day. It earns a 9 out 10 here.
Is the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class AWD?
Yes, every model has all-wheel drive with the ability to disconnect the front axle.
How fast is the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class?
The SL 43 model isn’t as brutally powerful as the others, but it still makes 375 hp and accelerates from 0-60 mph in a tidy 4.8 seconds, according to Mercedes. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 with a turbocharger that runs off of both exhaust gases and an electric motor. We have not yet driven the SL 43.
The step up from there is the SL 55, which draws its power from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. It spits out 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, cutting the 0-60 mph time to a quoted 3.8 seconds and unlocking a top speed of 183 mph. The SL 63 uses an upgraded version of the same engine with 577 hp, 590 lb-ft of torque. It conquers the 0-60 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds and reaches 196 mph.
Both V-8s have strong power throughout the rev band, though the 63 model’s extra power can be most felt in the midrange, for instance when passing on a highway. The engines sound a mean burble and they spit and crackle between shifts of the responsive 9-speed automatic transmission.
We also haven’t driven the SL 63 S E Performance. It produces a whopping 805 hp and 1,047 lb-ft, and slays the 0-60 mph run in just 2.8 seconds. The 9-speed automatic deals with the engine’s power and a 2-speed automatic transmission on the rear axle works with the rear motor. It also has a limited-slip differential and a 6.1-kwh battery pack back there.
The SL is also sportier than previous generations, though we still wouldn’t call it a track car. It’s agile with its base suspension, and the available linked hydraulic dampers do a great job of fighting lean in turns. The SL 55 and above get rear-wheel steering that stabilizes the SL through high-speed turns and shrinks it in parking lots. All models have quick steering and strong brakes, whether they’re the standard iron brakes or the optional carbon-ceramics.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Comfort & Quality
The SL is comfortable for two, but two more will suffer.
Front-seat occupants in the SL are surrounded by luxury, but the rear seat is a penalty box for humans. We penalize it a point here for the rear seat but add points for the supportive front seats and the high quality of the materials for a total of 6.
The front seats come with good bolstering to hold occupants in place through turns, and the available sport seats are even better. Neither is too tight for larger builds, and both versions have lots of adjustments to tailor a comfortable seating position, and they’re all made more comfortable by standard heating, cooling, and massage.
Leave the rear seats to packages instead of people. That will help expand the space of the small trunk, which only holds 7.5 cubic feet.
Mercedes lines the cabin with standard nappa leather upholstery complemented by aluminum trim, synthetic suede, and contrast stitching. The soft top is thick and blocks out noise well, too. It’s a calming, luxurious, techie environment.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Safety
Some of the SL’s safety options should be standard.
How safe is the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class?
It has a lot of safety equipment, though not as much as we’d like. It hasn’t been crash tested, though, so we can’t assign it a score here.
The NHTSA and IIHS don’t usually test high-end, low-volume vehicles, so we have no real-world proof of how safe the SL is. However, it does come with a healthy set of safety features. They include pop-up roll bars, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a driver attention monitor, automatic parking, adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, and a surround-view camera system.
A Driver Assistance Package adds many more safety features for about $2,000. They include steering assist for the blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and intersection assist, active lane control, and automatic lane changes. Given the price point, the upgraded automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control should be standard.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Features
The Mercedes-Benz AMG SL is priced to match its plentiful power and luxury.
The SL combines luxury and sportiness. It earns a 7 out of 10 here for its plentiful standard equipment and large touchscreens. A typical warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles doesn’t change the rating in either direction.
The AMG SL 43 starts at about $110,000 and comes standard with heated and cooled power front seats with massage, nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, an 11.9-inch touchscreen, navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, Burmester audio, a sport exhaust system, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Which Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class should I buy?
Given the SL’s performance pedigree, we’d want a V-8 with the fantastic hydraulic suspension. That ups the cost considerably, as an SL 55 in Performance trim runs about $150,000. In addition to the hydraulic suspension, it adds a front-axle lift system, an electronic limited-slip differential, a Race mode, rear-wheel steering, and 20-inch wheels.
How much is a fully loaded Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class?
The SL 63 runs about $184,000, but the SL 63 S E Performance doesn’t yet have a price. Expect it to top $200,000, maybe by a wide margin.
2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Fuel Economy
The AMG SL drinks gas, even the plug-in hybrid model.
Is the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class good on gas?
Oh no it isn’t. While 2024 fuel economy figures aren’t yet available, the 2023 numbers should hold. Mercedes hasn’t said which is the best seller, but it’s likely one of the V-8s. The SL 55 is rated at 14 mpg city, 22 highway, 16 combined.
The SL 63 isn’t that much more thirsty, with ratings of 13/21/16 mpg.
For the most efficient model, go with the SL 43 and its 21/27/23-mpg EPA ratings.
The SL 63 E Performance model is not yet rated, but it has the same engine as the SL 63 and a 6.1-kwh battery that should provide 10 or so miles of electric driving range.
