Overview
The hydrogen-powered Nexo is Hyundai's eco-friendly flagship, packed with state-of-the-art tech. The Nexo, however, is sold in California, which is currently the only state that offers a network of hydrogen-fueling stations. It's the sole SUV offering among hydrogen-powered vehicles, a small segment that also includes the Honda Clarity and the Toyota Mirai sedans.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
Its 95-kW fuel cell and 40-kW battery power an electric motor that makes 291 lb-ft of torque. Although Hyundai claimed a zero-to-60-mph time of 9.5 seconds, the Nexo outperformed that estimate at our test track, delivering an 8.4-second result. That figure puts it in the mix with many other gasoline-powered compact SUVs, including Hyundai's own Tucson, but still isn't particularly thrilling. The Nexo is offered in either Blue or Limited trim, with the former coming with an impressive estimated range of 380 miles; Limited models carry a slightly lower range estimate of 354 miles.
Interior and Technology
The Nexo's cabin is about as spacious as any small SUV, and four adults should fit comfortably regardless of which row they're seated. Hyundai includes plenty of luxuries as standard, including power-adjustable front seats with heat, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a wireless smartphone-charging pad, and automatic climate control. Opting for the Limited model adds ventilated front seats, an eight-speaker audio system, a 360-degree-exterior camera system, a heated steering wheel, and a large sunroof. A suite of driver-assistance features also comes on every Nexo and includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
