The 2024 Nissan Ariya delivers on the electric future promised by the Leaf—especially in dual-motor form.
What kind of car is the 2024 Nissan Ariya? What does it compare to?
It’s a battery-electric crossover SUV that seats five people. Compare it to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Is the 2024 Nissan Ariya a good car?
It’s Nissan’s best effort in years. The Ariya has finely finished space, a user-friendly driver interface, and a moderate base price, though its best range checks in at an OK 304 miles. It earns a TCC Rating of 8.4 out of 10, pending more safety testing. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Nissan Ariya?
Nissan hasn’t released 2024 information yet, but the dual-motor Ariya e-4orce arrived late in the 2023 model year, burdened by its silly name but elevated with its far more capable ride and handling.
The Ariya’s part of an EV crossover wave that maximizes aero efficiency with jellybean-smooth style. It rises above that anonymity thanks to a sharp V-shaped grille and a chrome band that arrows down its roofline. The bigger statement’s made inside, where Nissan has crafted a cabin worthy of an Infiniti badge, with touch-sensitive controls concealed under wood trim and a dual-screen information band that nearly spans the cabin.
Base Ariya crossovers have a 63-kwh battery and a single electric motor good for 0-60 mph runs of 7.2 seconds, but the better bet across the range of combinations is with the larger 87-kwh battery pack and the dual-motor AWD drivetrain. That lifts power from a low of 214 hp to a high of 389 hp—and drops 0-60 mph runs to 4.8 seconds, according to Nissan. Range checks in as low as 216 miles in base spec, as high as 304 miles with the larger battery and the single-motor setup. The Ariya only charges at a maximum of 130 kw, though. Single-motor versions have softer, less composed ride and handling. The dual-motor version uses both its power units all the time to adjust acceleration in tandem with individual brakes; that gives the Ariya the ability to damp its ride much better, delivering a nimble feel though it weighs about 4,600 pounds in high-end models.
With a Rogue footprint and Murano interior space, the Ariya gets finely padded seats that need to leave more headroom for tall drivers. Four people can fit very well inside, though a fifth might be squeezed. Cargo spans runs to nearly 60 cubic feet behind the front seats, and most versions get a set of cargo organizers and bins to flesh out the Ariya’s utility.
Crash-test scores have been good, with a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. The Ariya comes with a wealth of safety features including automatic emergency braking—and most versions get ProPilot Assist 2.0, which enables hands-free driving with an attentive driver at the wheel.
How much does the 2024 Nissan Ariya cost?
Prices have been cut for 2024, making the Ariya a stronger value. Nissan fits the base $40,980 Ariya with an EV drive system good for 216 miles of range, dual 12.3-inch screens with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, synthetic leather upholstery, a power driver seat, and heated outboard seats. A larger battery pack raises the price on that version by $1,600; all other models save for the base dual-motor model come with the bigger battery. The best deal is the dual-motor Ariya with all-wheel drive, which costs $46,580.
Where is the 2024 Nissan Ariya made?
In Japan, which means it’s not eligible for the latest federal electric-vehicle tax incentives.
2024 Nissan Ariya Styling
Sleek and well-finished, the Ariya’s a stealth Infiniti.
Is the Nissan Ariya a good-looking car?
It’s attractive inside and out, and sets into motion a revamped theme that should grace future Nissan EVs. We give it a point above average for its exterior and two for the handsomely finished interior, for an 8 here.
The Ariya’s tall and broad face sports a non-functional V-shaped grille; it breathes for some battery cooling through side air intakes that flank the nose. That grille tapers into a band of chrome that arrows down the car’s roofline to outline its shape precisely. Nissan fits standard 19-inch wheels with attractive aerodynamic wheel covers, while 20-inchers are an option. SUV cues get punted to the curb: the Ariya doesn’t wear any needless rubberized cladding. From some angles it’s bulbous, but from most it’s an attractive harbinger.
Inside, the serene and swanky vibe plays out across a wood-trimmed dash with banks of 12.3-inch screens that display gauges for the driver and run the infotainment system through touch inputs. They’re wedded under a single piece of glass, and framed with glossy black plastic that’s thankfully absent elsewhere. Nissan opted for subtle haptic buttons that lie under the wood dash panels, complementing the drive mode selector that sits on the power-operated console (it slides fore and aft). Uncluttered and polished with handsome trim in quietly groovy colors, the Ariya interior receives guests like a great front-of-the-room host.
2024 Nissan Ariya Performance
Single-motor Ariyas pale in comparison with the nimble dual-motor models.
With a choice between 63-kwh and 87-kwh battery packs and single or dual electric motors, the Nissan Ariya spreads out its electric car abilities across a wide price and performance spectrum. All versions have able manners, but the dual-motor’s agile responses and outright speed would get our nod. We give the Ariya a 7 for performance.
Is the Nissan Ariya 4WD?
Nissan now offers front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive editions. The AWD model’s dubbed the e-4orce, which is why we’ll refer to it as the AWD model as we shake our heads.
How fast is the Nissan Ariya?
Single-motor versions make either 214 hp or 238 hp, depending on whether they have the smaller battery pack of theEngage or the larger, longer-range pack in otherversions. Both generate 221 lb-ft of torque. More silent than swift by electric-car standards, this Ariya can hustle to 60 mph in a Nissan-promised 7.2 seconds. It’s modest performance compared with the top-like Mach-E and Model Y crossovers, but Nissan says it’s tuned this Ariya intentionally to mimic gas-crossover performance.
The Ariya weighs from about 4,300 to about 4,600 pounds—about a thousand pounds more than a Rogue–and it is not rated for towing. Battery range rises as high as 304 miles on the Venture+ with the larger battery, and dips as low as 216 miles with the smaller-battery Engage.
With dual motors, the Ariya springs to life. Depending again on the battery pack, the dual-motor Ariya’s power outputs range from 335 hp and 413 lb-ft to 389 hp and 442 lb-ft. Nissan pegs this version at 4.8 seconds from 0-60 mph—and rates it for a low 1,500 pounds of towing.
Drive modes can tailor power delivery, but the Ariya lacks full one-pedal driving. It gets an e-Step button that opens up a brake-regen mode that gets close to that holy Grail, but requires pedal braking for the few final feet. Regen can also be applied with a “B” drive mode.
With a conventional front-strut and rear-multilink suspension, base Ariyas have a springy state of tune that’s meant to absorb the car’s heft. It responds softly to changes in steering, too. In all, it feels dialed in for comfort—at the expense of all other senses.
The dual-motor Ariya fixes all those sensory shortcomings. It uses its motors not just for traction or acceleration; Nissan deploys them to balance the vehicle’s stability as it tackles curves and corners, much in the same way that Nissan’s AWD system functions in its GT-R supercar. As it squeezes individual brakes and diverts power between the motors, it can correct some pitching and lean, giving the Ariya an uncommonly smooth ride and more crisp handling than the single-motor edition. All it needs is better brake feel: the pedal’s too soft until it grabs the friction brakes.
2024 Nissan Ariya Comfort & Quality
Nissan takes the crossover SUV to the next level in the Ariya.
With a footprint the size of Nissan’s Rogue SUV but an interior more like its midsize Murano, the Nissan Ariya boasts excellent passenger and cargo space, with plush seats and great fit and finish. It’s a 9 here.
All Ariya SUVs can seat up to five passengers, but Nissan configures them with better equipment in small-battery Engage trim than it does in big-battery Venture+ trim. The former gets passengers a power driver seat and synthetic leather trim, as well as heated seats in the four outboard positions. The latter has manual seats with cloth upholstery—in the interest of value and maximizing its range rating. The driver seat should be lower, to better accommodate tall drivers, but otherwise the Ariya’s seats have excellent support and lots of spread-out kneeroom and shoulder room.
With 37.0 inches of rear legroom, the Ariya boasts enough space for tall back-seat passengers to sit behind tall people in front. It’s on the borderline of comfort for a third person in the middle.
For weekend jaunts the Ariya sports 22.8 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats, or 59.7 cubic feet when those are folded down. Every version except the Venture+ gets a cargo organizer and storage bins in the back.
The Ariya’s cabin outpoints some of the offerings from upscale Infiniti SUVs. It’s trimmed in smooth wood, has an airy feel, and some touch-sensitive controls lie flush on the dash. A panoramic sunroof casts light around the cabin, showing off its high grade of materials. It’s a pretty, and pretty pleasant, place to whittle down the miles.
2024 Nissan Ariya Safety
The Ariya stands guard against crashes.
How safe is the Nissan Ariya?
The Ariya has proved some of its mettle in crash tests. It has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award for 2024, and the NHTSA gives front-drive models a five-star overall rating, with a caveat of a four-star front-impact score.
Still, every Ariya has great safety tech standard, including blind-spot monitors, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, automatic headlights, and a driver-attention monitor.
Most versions can be fitted with Pro Pilot Assist 2.0, Nissan’s hands-free driver assistance. It can trace the Ariya’s route along more than 200,000 miles of mapped highways in North America. The driver-attention monitor ensures safe operation, as the hands-free mode requires the camera to make eye contact with the driver.
With all that, the Ariya stands at a 9 for safety.
2024 Nissan Ariya Features
The Ariya sports a premium interior and a wealth of features.
Nissan cut the 2024 Ariya's price rather dramatically. Base Ariya Engage crossovers get synthetic leather upholstery, a power driver seat, heated front and second-row seats, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all for $40,980. With all-wheel drive and the standard smaller battery pack, the Ariya e-4orce costs $44,980.
Nissan supplies the Ariya with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty which includes scheduled service.
The Ariya isn’t eligible for the current brace of federal tax credits.
Oddly, stepping into the next-higher Venture+ trim while adding the larger battery pack downgrades the experience—to help bankroll the larger battery while keeping weight down (and rated range up). So equipped, the Ariya gets cloth seats with manual adjustment, no seat heating, and can’t be configured with a head-up display. It also loses the 240-volt charge cable.
Which Nissan Ariya should I buy?
Some drivers will be satisfied with the smaller-pack Engage, but we’d recommend the larger battery and the $45,580 Evolve+ trim level. It includes all the Engage features and gains wireless smartphone charging tucked beneath the armrest, a hands-free tailgate, a surround-view camera system, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof.
How much is a fully loaded Nissan Ariya?
The $55,580 Ariya Platinum+ includes Pro Pilot Assist 2.0, all-wheel drive, Bose audio, ambient lighting, ProPilot Assist, and an option for 20-inch wheels.
2024 Nissan Ariya Fuel Economy
The Ariya gets up to 304 miles of range.
Is the Nissan Ariya good on energy?
It’s good enough to earn a 9, thanks to an efficiency rating on most models that approaches 3.0 miles/kwh. Base front-drive Ariyas exceed that, but most of the lineup falls just shy at about 2.9 miles/kwh.
The base 63-kwh Ariya battery can go for up to 216 miles, and earns an EPA-rated 101 MPGe combined. The bigger 87-kwh battery offers much more, with up to 304 miles of range on the base front-drive Ariya and up to 272 miles on the all-wheel-drive edition.
All Ariya crossovers offer CCS charging at rates of up to 130 kw. That enables a full charge from 20-80% in about 40 minutes. On a Level 2 240-volt circuit and using the SUV’s 7.2-kw onboard charger, the Ariya can take 14 hours to charge.
