  • Highs Refined powertrain, upscale interior, more cargo room than some competitors.
  • Lows Lackluster acceleration, suspension gets upset over bumpy surfaces, dated dashboard design.
  • Verdict The Q3 boasts a capable powertrain and a roomy, high-quality interior, but it is showing its age and feels overdue for a complete overhaul.

Overview

The Q3 is Audi’s entry into the small-compact SUV market. Smaller than the compact Audi Q5 sport-utility, it share its platform with the Volkswagen Golf. While most Audis come standard with Quattro all-wheel drive, the base Q3 starts with front-wheel drive to give it more sticker space below the Q5, though AWD is an option you will find populating most dealer lots, especially in the north. The Q3’s ride height has been raised slightly for the U.S. market from the European-spec model, and it competes most directly with the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, BMW X1, and Infiniti QX 30. The Q3 entered the North American market in the 2015 model year and just one year later was treated to a minor facelift, with Audi’s latest grille design and new, narrower headlamps.

What's New for 2017?

Audi has made some previously optional Premium trim equipment standard, while also adding to the standard equipment list for the Premium Plus. The Q3 Premium now includes 12-way power front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and LED taillamps and daytime running lamps. The Premium Plus now comes with heated power folding side-view mirrors with driver-side automatic dimming, and a power tailgate with programmable preset.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Q3 is offered with just one powertrain, a 200-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four, combined with a six-speed automatic transmission and front- or Quattro all-wheel-drive. This is a refined powertrain, with an AWD system that never allows the momentary torque steer found in many competitors. Acceleration in the Q3 is relatively languid, however, with a 7.8-second 0-60 mph time. Ride quality is rather busy over lumpy roads, the result in part of a very short wheelbase. What’s more, the brake pedal feels disconcertedly soft, especially coming from a German brand. The optional Audi Drive Select system lets the driver tweak steering, suspension, and powertrain settings between Comfort, Dynamic, and automatic modes.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Audi has a knack for high-quality interiors with superior fit and finish, and the Q3 does not disappoint. Trim levels are Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige, each with leather seating surfaces standard, and there’s an optional Sport Plus package featuring driver’s front sport seats with additional bolstering, and a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with shift paddles. Despite the high quality, the dashboard design is looking a bit dated. And the Q3’s driving position is somewhat bus-like, with a high seat, low cowl, and a steering wheel that projects up from the dash as much as outward. Rear-seat comfort is exceptional, however, and the interior space is very usable. Cargo space is 16.7 cubic-feet behind the second row and a generous 48.2 cubic-feet behind the first row.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Standard tech for the Q3 includes Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and a 10-speaker stereo with satellite radio. Higher trims add the Audi Connect interface, with a 7.0-inch center touchscreen, navigation, in-vehicle WiFi connecting up to eight devices, and a 14-speaker Bose audio system.
