The 2024 Rivian R1T marries pickup truck flexibility, off-road capability, electric age technology, and blistering performance in one appealing package.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Rivian R1T? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Rivian R1T is an electric pickup truck sized between the Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Ranger, but it accelerates like a supercar, off-roads like a Wrangler Rubicon, and costs less than other luxury electric utility vehicles such as the GMC Hummer EV and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV.
Is the 2024 Rivian R1T a good truck?
The R1T’s uncanny combination of gut-dropping performance, breathtaking off-road capability, luxury-like standard convenience and safety features, and packaging optimized for the electric vehicle platform earn it a TCC Rating of 8.8 out of 10, which is one of the highest ratings of the more than 250 vehicles tested annually. What's new for the 2024 Rivian R1T?
The big change for the 2024 model year is the expanded rollout of the 149-kwh Max battery pack that provides up to 410 miles of range in the Dual-Motor models. Over-the-air software updates enabled a bed camera, and drive features such as ride height and regenerative braking are now part of the main menu to make it easier to find and activate. A swipe of the R1T image on the touchscreen accesses drive modes, and the gauge cluster has more granular data for elevation, tire pressure, trip meters, and pitch and roll gauges. A new trailer profile feature allows for more accurate range estimates while towing.
Other than that, the R1T carries over for its third model year. Its short nose, fronted by oval LED headlights that look like robot eyes, leads to a body that’s about a foot shorter than an F-150. It has an easily accessible bed, a smart gear tunnel between the crew cab and the short bed, and a front trunk, demonstrating how Rivian optimized cabin space and storage possibilities. The cab can seat four adults comfortably, and with standard heated and cooled power front seats it’s easy to drive for hours without fatigue. For sportier driving, the R1T could benefit from more side bolstering.
Offered in three all-wheel-drive configurations and three battery pack sizes, as well as with adaptive damping and an air suspension with 6.5 inches of travel, the Rivian R1T excels on the street as much as off of it.
The base Dual-Motor model has a 106-kwh battery pack with a 270-mile range. It makes 533 hp and 610 lb-ft, launches to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and has more off-road capability than the average pickup truck. It can also be had with the 135-kwh Large pack with a range of 352 miles, or the new 149-kwh Max pack with a range of 410 miles.
The Performance Dual-Motor comes with either the Large or Max pack, and its 665 hp and 829 lb-ft rockets it to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. It’s our recommended powertrain because it can do most everything the Quad-Motor can do, only cleaner, cheaper, and with more battery options. Like other R1Ts, it can tow up to 11,000 pounds or it can ride as quietly and comfortably as a large sedan on highways. The Quad remains a stunning technological feat, making 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 mph of 3.0 seconds. It only comes with the 135-kwh Large pack and range dips to 328 miles.
Rivian packages each R1T with a suite of driver-assist technology that usually costs extra on luxury vehicles, such as a standard surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control. The IIHS bestowed its highest safety honor on the R1T with a Top Safety Pick+.
How much does the 2024 Rivian R1T cost?
It’s a question of battery pack size and motor setup. The 2024 Rivian R1T Dual-Motor AWD with 21-inch wheels costs $74,800, including a $1,800 destination charge, before the available $3,750 federal EV tax credit. The one—and only—Adventure trim comes loaded with a 15.6-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster that take over all traditional controls, and it has 8-way power front seats that are heated and cooled, as well as a heated steering wheel, front tow hooks, a Meridian sound system, an on-board air compressor, and a power tailgate.
The Large pack adds $6,000, while the Max pack adds $16,000.
The Performance Dual-Motor starts with the Large pack at $85,800. Add the Max pack for $95,800.
The $88,800 Quad-Motor model only comes with the Large pack.
Where is the 2024 Rivian R1T made?
In Normal, Illinois, alongside the R1S three-row electric SUV.
2024 Rivian R1T Styling
The Rivian R1T looks more like the future of pickup trucks than the lunar Cybertruck does.
Is the Rivian R1T a good-looking truck?
The R1T adopts the boxy proportions of traditional pickup trucks but lights up the R1T’s smaller footprint with futuristic details, from the robot-like eyes and headband light bar to a spare dash trimmed in natural materials. The exterior’s seamless blend of the classic and modern, and the interior’s smart packaging wrapped in a luxury bow each earn it two points to a 9.
Rivian has created a light signature that makes it instantly recognizable. The oval LED headlights and fog lights below look like an android, and the light bar ringing the headlights and taillights at the rear create an imaginary halo around the slab-sided body. Up front on the short snout, a skid plate separates a pair of tow hooks, and a character line kicks up from the doors to the rear, over cladding with air vents in rectangular wheel arches that house wheels ranging in size from 20 to 22 inches.
The interior aims to do more with less, with a 15.6-inch touchscreen stamped onto a dash made of ash wood and aluminum-like trim. Vents sit below and hide in the ends, with the touchscreen handling most every vehicle command, from drive modes to climate control and wiper speed. The complementary 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster makes it visually more intuitive than Tesla’s system, but Rivian showcases much nicer materials, from the ribbed seating to door pocket panels that snap back into place to fit big water bottles. The steering wheel controls lack icons so Rivian can use over-the-air updates to change the functionality, but they’re simple enough to learn due to icons in the cluster. Rivian stamps its badges everywhere, from the seat backs to the dash edge, but the R1T still retains that clean, bright look.
2024 Rivian R1T Performance
Off-road or on the street, the 2024 Rivian R1T exceeds performance expectations.
The Rivian R1T can hit 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, it can follow a Wrangler Rubicon just about anywhere, yet on the road it handles with the quiet composure of a large sedan. It just misses a perfect 10 because even with its air suspension, it’s a weighty, high-riding pickup truck that will never handle like a Porsche.
Is the Rivian R1T 4WD?
Yes, but the R1T can be had in two different drive systems, one with four Bosch motors, one with two Rivian-developed motors.
How fast is the Rivian R1T?
It ranges from quick to supercar quick.
The Quad-Motor model makes 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque, to get the truck from 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds. It’s breathtakingly quick. But it can only be had with the 135-kwh battery pack and an estimated range of 328 miles.
The Dual-Motor models can be had with three battery pack sizes that dramatically affect the range. The base model only has All-Terrain, All-Purpose, and Snow modes, but it’s the only R1T that can be had with a 105-kwh Standard pack with a 270-mile range. It’s the budget R1T, yet it makes 533 hp and 610 lb-ft, good for a 0-60 mph time in 4.5 seconds, and it handles hillsides and boulder ravines with ease. The available Large pack boosts range to 352 miles, while the new 149-kwh Max pack bumps it to 410 miles.
The Performance Dual-Motor hits the sweet spot. It can be had with the Large or Max pack, and a Sport mode tapping into 665 hp and 829 lb-ft helps launch it to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. It’s our recommended powertrain.
Rivian R1T ride and handling
Both versions have All-Purpose, Snow, All-Terrain, and Towing modes, but the units have different final gear ratios.
The big difference off-road between the two drive units comes from how torque gets routed to the wheels. The Dual relies on brake-based torque vectoring, whereas the Quad utilizes the four motors to apportion torque to each wheel. The Quad is a better experience in spirited on-road driving and more daring off-road scenarios, but the Dual is so capable that only in back-to-back testing does it feel a grade lower.
Consider the Quad-Motor to be optimized for off-roading, with its All-Terrain sub-modes that include Drift, Rally, Rock Crawl, Soft Sand, and Conserve mode. Conserve mode is only meant to be used to get to the last miles of a destination if the battery charge is low. Keep in mind that Conserve mode in the Quad-Motor lowers the air suspension to its lowest drive setting of 10.1 inches of ground clearance, and adjusts the camber in a way that may unduly cause front tire wear, especially with the All-Terrain package. The Dual-Motor units lack a Conserve mode, instead relying on its default All-Purpose mode that decouples the rear axle to run as a front-wheel-drive truck for greater efficiency in most scenarios. If you floor it, the rear axle unit powers on-demand, so the torque shifts from solely the front wheels to a near even split with the rear wheels so all four wheels are more planted on the ground.
The standard suspension setting is 11.3 inches off the ground, and even in Sport mode with the dampers and air springs, it leans into corners like other high-riding vehicles. The motors do an incredible job of offsetting the R1T’s prodigious weight of up to 7,148 pounds, but the weight and height become most obvious in turns, even with inspiration from McLaren on how to cut corners.
Off-road modes can raise the ground clearance to 14.4 inches. With no differential case hanging from the axle, the R1T can clear a great many more obstacles than other off-roaders.
Both the Quad- and Dual-Motor trucks can tow up to 11,000 pounds, but expect a 45% battery range drop when towing near that threshold. One last thing to note: Rivian’s on-board range telematics are the most accurate mileage estimates we’ve tested in an EV, continuously updated based on outside and interior conditions. It’s a welcome reassurance.
2024 Rivian R1T Comfort & Quality
The R1T sports a roomy crew cab, an expandable bed, and a clever gear tunnel.
The Rivian R1T has big truck storage with small truck moves. The cabin has the roominess and rear seat flexibility of crew cabs on larger full-size trucks, the 54.0-inch bed expands to 83.8 inches with the tailgate down, the front trunk and the gear tunnel add secure storage areas, and the truck’s luxury-like fit and finish all earn it points here to a 9.
The R1T sits about a foot shorter than pickup trucks like the Ford F-150, yet it’s about eight inches wider than midsize trucks such as the Ford Ranger. This adds up to a roomy crew cab but a short bed that’s wide enough to fit sheets of plywood with the tailgate down and with the sheets strapped down to the pair of tie-downs or via the eight bed clamps. Hidden floor storage houses a spare or can be used as a cooler with its drain plug. We’d opt for the full-size spare, because every R1T comes with a 150-psi air compressor in the bed that makes it so easy to air down to hit the trail, then air back up to drive back home, or to fill inflatable mattresses or watercraft for all the outdoor adventures. Two 120-volt outlets and LED bed lighting simplify the outdoor experience. Payload maxes out at 1,760 pounds, and accessories such as a rooftop tent put the available bed or roof rails to good use. With the air suspension in “Kneel” mode, the R1T’s short bed walls make it easy to retrieve stuff.
That’s abetted by the gear tunnel between the cab and bed. The power doors fold flat and hold 250 pounds to make an ideal place to lace or unlace the hiking boots, as well as a step to access the roof rack or to rummage through the bed. The tunnel expands the 29.2 cubic feet of storage space in the bed with another 11.6 cubic feet that can hold 300 pounds and secure precious items, as well as food stuffs from nosy neighbors in the wild. The frunk also secures 11.0 cubic feet of space.
All of these storage areas complement a roomy crew cabin with power front seats that are heated and cooled, though some riders might want more side bolstering. The R1T would benefit from grab handles on the pillar to get in and out and to hold onto when lumbering off road. Clever storage pockets abound inside, from the LED flashlight tucked into the door side like a Rolls-Royce umbrella to the portable camp speaker that charges under the console and slides out. Instead of a glove box, the front seat bottoms have flip out storage trays for sunglasses, important docs, or some emergency beef jerky. Retractable cupholders and a butterfly console cover offer plenty of additional space.
The 36.6 inches of rear legroom has the kind of space of a crossover more than a truck, but the flip-up rear seats and retractable seat pockets add even more storage space. Fitting three adults in the back makes for a tight fit.
2024 Rivian R1T Safety
The 2024 R1T earns a Top Safety Pick+ and comes loaded with driver-assist features.
How safe is the Rivian R1T?
If the NHTSA got around to crash-testing the Rivian R1T, it would likely earn a 9 here, missing only a point for limited rear outward vision. But standard driver-assist technology such as blind-spot monitors and a surround-view camera system help drivers see around those big pillars. It also comes with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams, as well as helpful optional tech to keep the R1T and its occupants safe. Those attributes each earn it a point, as does its Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, the insurance-industry funded agency’s highest safety rating. It’s an 8.
The optional gear takes advantage of the surround-view camera system, which is an unusual piece of standard equipment, as well as the 12 sensors, 11 cameras, and five radar units that allow for both off-road eyes where you can’t see and for a limited hands-free driving system with excellent graphics in the cluster and clear indicators of when it’s enabled or disabled. It seems sophisticated enough for longer than 30 second intervals, but maybe it will change with an OTA.
A Gear Guard system features a Whac-A-Mole like icon that pops up on the touchscreen and uses the sensors and cameras to activate when motion is detected within four feet of the truck. If a bear plans to ransack the bed, or a thief tries to pry, the system sends an alert and a live view to connected phones.
2024 Rivian R1T Features
The 2024 Rivian R1T ranges in price from $74,800 to $95,800, then there’s all the gear.
Which Rivian R1T should I buy?
The 2024 Rivian R1T comes very well equipped, as it should at $74,800, including a $1,800 destination charge. That’s for the base Dual-Motor model Adventure trim with 21-inch wheels and the Standard Pack. That’s more than enough adventure truck for us, but the question here is about performance and range.
Every Adventure trim includes 8-way power front seats that are heated, cooled, and covered with vegan synthetic leather upholstery. It has a heated steering wheel, front tow hooks, a Meridian sound system, an on-board air compressor, a power tailgate, nifty door pocket flashlights, and a portable camp speaker that charges wirelessly under the console. It’s a great package that earns a point.
Also earning a point is the infotainment system that pairs a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch touchscreen that absorbs most of the controls for a minimalist approach. It takes some time to unlock all its functions and uses, but it’s a shining example of a large touchscreen done right, and frequent over-the-air updates keep it fresh.
The options list earns another point, ranging from the $3,850 All-Terrain upgrade with 20-inch all-terrain wheels and tires and spare to a tonneau cover and all the crossbars and mounts. Lastly, every R1T gets a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, with 8 years or 175,000 miles for the drivetrain and battery pack. That’s worth a point to a 9 total.
How much is a fully loaded Rivian R1T?
The Performance Dual-Motor model with the Max pack tops the lineup at $95,800 but adding the $1,800 tonneau cover and any color other than silver brings it to six figures.
2024 Rivian R1T Fuel Economy
Three battery packs extend R1T range from 270 to 410 miles.
Is the Rivian R1T good on energy?
Introduced late in 2023, the 149-kwh Max pack enables 410 miles of range on Rivian’s Dual-Motor models versus 352 miles of range with the 135-kwh Large pack. The EPA hasn’t certified the 2024 R1T yet, but expect it to have an efficiency of about 2.5 miles per kwh. The Dual-Motor with the Large pack rates at 2.3 miles per kwh, according to the EPA. That earns a score of 9 here.
The Dual-Motor with the 108-kwh Standard pack has a range of 270 miles, and that pack is only available on the base model. Expect it to be rated at about 2.1 miles per kwh.
The Quad-Motor model sold only with the Large pack has an estimated range of 328 miles. It’s rated at 2.2 miles per kwh.
Range estimates depend on tire size and how you drive it; in Sport mode, your mileage will vary. Upgrading to 22-inch wheels on the Quad drops the range by 25 miles to 303 miles and lowers the efficiency to 2.0 miles per kwh. The 22-inch wheels on the Dual-Motor models drop the range 11 miles to 341 miles and the efficiency rating follows suit.
How long does it take to charge the Rivian R1T?
Rivian vehicles will be able to charge at Tesla’s 12,000 Superchargers as early as spring 2024 with an adapter, and in 2025 Rivian will incorporate Tesla’s more efficient North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its ports, with an available CCS adapter.
For now, the port on the driver’s side fender follows J1772 and CCS standards, with DC fast-charging at more than 200 kw, enabling about 140 miles of charge in 20 minutes. Rivian says it’s still building out its DC fast-charging Adventure Network with 600 sites planned in North America.
Level 2 Waypoints at 11.5 kw charge from 16 to 25 miles per hour, or about 13 hours overnight. Over-the-air software updates can boost charge rates and times.
