Overview
The 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback has the power to compress chests and the space to haul people and cargo. This high-powered hatchback is essentially a stretched four-door version of the two-door Audi RS5 coupe. Its performance headlines the Audi Sportback pyramid that includes the A5 hatchback and the sporty S5 variant. The RS5 Sportback is visually distinguished by an extra-aggressive front end that features a large grill and gaping lower intakes.
Engine, Ride, and Handling
The RS5 Sportback sole engine choice is a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 engine that makes 444 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a paddle-shifted eight-speed automatic transmission that routes that power to all four wheels. Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system not only maximizes traction, it also can direct more power to the rear wheels to provide rear-wheel-drive characteristics. While we haven't tested an RS5 Sportback at the track, our first-drive impressions revealed that it is stable at autobahn speeds and a hoot to hustle around corners, with well-controlled body motions and predictable handling. Switching between the different selectable drive modes, the adaptive dampers provided a smooth ride quality in all but the sportiest Dynamic setting.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the RS5 Sportback includes the company's typically sophisticated design and exemplary build quality. The driver faces a handsome flat-bottom steering wheel backed by a large 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The intricately stitched seats feature heated and cooled surfaces as well as massaging functions for front-seat passengers. The standard infotainment system uses an 8.3-inch center screen that's operated by an intuitive rotary controller. The system also features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Every RS5 Sportback also can be equipped with driver-assistance technology such as adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-keeping assist, self-parking assist, and more.
