Overview
The Sierra is a highly capable and endlessly configurable full-size pickup with a host of potent powertrain choices. The crown jewel is an optional 6.2-liter V-8 that makes a class-leading 420 horsepower and can tow up to 12,500 pounds when properly equipped. Every Sierra boasts an excellent infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The handsome GMC might not be as advanced as the Ford F-150, but it covers the bases in every situation.
What's New for 2018?
The new Sierra is available with eAssist, a mild hybrid system that uses a single electric motor that doesn’t power the truck on its own but works with the gas engine to boost efficiency. Every model gets a backup camera, and the base trim now comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display. The lineup also adds two new exterior colors, Deep Mahogany Metallic and Red Quartz Tintcoat.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The GMC Sierra’s base powerplant is a 285-hp 4.3-liter V-6 that produces 305 lb-ft of torque. Stepping up to the 5.3-liter V-8 boosts the stats to 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic is standard, but an eight-speed automatic is available on SLT and Denali models. Atop the Sierra range sits a potent 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 with 460 lb-ft of torque and the eight-speed automatic. Only the 5.3-liter can be equipped with the mild hybrid eAssist system. The Sierra is a truck, and it drives like one. It’s never happy being thrown into corners at sports-car speeds, and the ride is rough over uneven surfaces. But highway cruising is comfortable. When it comes to truck duties, such as towing a trailer or hauling a load of home-improvement materials, the Sierra handles it all with aplomb.
Fuel Economy
EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Sierra boasts one of the segment’s roomiest interiors. Regular-cab models provide seating for three on a large bench seat, while double and crew cabs have room for six on two rows of bench seats. Base Sierras are fitted with rubberized floor coverings, and even items like power windows and remote keyless entry are optional. Denali models are the most plush, with standard leather, heated surfaces, and other luxury touches. We found the Sierra’s cabin pleasant and practical, but unfortunately some build-quality issues plague an otherwise useful interior. One of the most cavernous beds in the segment plus an easily reconfigurable rear seat make the Sierra incredibly versatile. Its center-console cubby is spacious, too, but the rest of the bins are not showstopping.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Every Sierra now comes with a version of the full-featured IntelliLink interface. The entry-level trim has a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Sierra’s optional 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system features all of the apps and Wi-Fi you could ask for, and optional navigation is displayed on the gauge cluster as well as the screen.
