Overview

The Silverado HD's gym is the job site, and its brawny body is built to tow rather than for show. Underneath the Chevy's heavy-duty shell is the same chassis and powertrain pairings as on the GMC Sierra HD. That includes the iconic Duramax diesel engine and Allison transmission option. The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are more than diesel powerhouses, they also have terrific driving responses for their size. Plus, the 3500HD model can tow up to 23,300 pounds—less than the mightiest Ford and Ram rivals. Despite that stat, Chevy's premier pickups have unrivaled performance and a proven pedigree that solidifies their spot near the top of this tightly contested segment. An all-new Silverado HD will go on sale in summer 2019.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

The standard 360-hp V-8 and six-speed automatic transmission are more than adequate for those who don't need the available diesel's earth-shattering torque and added cost. The diesel powertrain develops 445 horsepower and a remarkable 910 lb-ft of torque, which make the Silverado HD incredibly quick and highly capable. It's also one of the most agile heavy-duty pickups this side of anywhere. No one will write home about its ride quality, but compared with the competition it's one of the best. It's complacent on smooth surfaces, and long road trips won't instigate arthritis. However, harsh obstacles such as railroad tracks will upset the big pickup and pothole-stricken pavement will rattle your grandparents' dentures loose, especially in the stiffer 3500HD.

Interior and Technology

A spacious front seat, a straightforward interior layout, and a luxurious interior are big pluses for the Silverado HD. It's a handsome habitat for a makeshift office or for hauling people, but the off-center steering column can be bothersome. A responsive and intuitive infotainment system, connectivity outlets galore, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more controls than an Xbox will satisfy Silverado HD owners. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is finding space in the Silverado HD's cabins or cargo beds where you can't store your stuff. The Silverado HD has average crash-test ratings and is less tech-savvy than the Ford Super Duty models. Available driver-assistance features are reserved for the top two trims, but an optional aftermarket camera system is extremely useful for towing.
