Overview

The Chevrolet Sonic can be a bargain-priced economy car or one with a little pep in its step when ordered with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes with the higher trim levels. Available as either a four-door hatchback or sedan, the Sonic boasts an impressive roster of tech for a car in this price range. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Comfortable and easy to drive, the Sonic is a handsome and well-mannered choice among rivals that include the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Accent.

What's New for 2018?

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Sonic sedan and hatchback are motivated by a 138-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder that’s available with your choice of a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. While we’re usually pro manual, the five-speed runs out of steam (and revs) quickly at highway speeds. We’re partial to the optional 1.4-liter turbocharged engine which, strange as it sounds, delivers the exact same 138 horsepower to the front wheels. The key is torque, and that's where the turbo four holds the edge: 148 pound-feet, compared to 125 in the base engine. It’s much more satisfying to drive with either the six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. You won’t go worrying Camaro drivers when a traffic light turns green, but the Sonic has reasonable get-up-and-go for an economy car. The Sonic offers a comfortable ride but doesn't inspire when driven hard. One notable surprise is how quiet it is at highway cruising speed.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Both the Sonic sedan and hatchback offer nearly the same interior dimensions, with the hatch having slightly better rear headroom thanks to its more squared-off tail. If total cargo capacity is important, go with the hatchback. In terms of the design and materials used in the cabin, well, the Sonic isn’t going to set any styling trends. This is a basic interior, and the plastics remind you this is a value-minded machine. On the plus side, everything is within easy reach and all the controls are logically placed.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Sonic has one of the best infotainment systems and level of standard tech available in a car in this price range. Scrolling through the menus and commands on the 7.0-inch touchscreen is simple and easy to master in minutes. Standard features include Bluetooth, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a four-speaker audio system, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Available extras include a premium six-speak stereo and SiriusXM satellite radio.
