  • Highs Unsurpassed carrying and towing ability, powerful diesel engine option, available luxury interior features.
  • Lows Harsh ride on bumpy roads, less front-seat room than the competition, luxury features add cost quickly.
  • Verdict The 2018 Ford F-series Super Duty pickups lead or equal their rivals in areas like hauling and towing, and they can be outfitted to a surprising degree of luxury.

Overview

Whether it’s the F-250, F-350, or F-450, Ford’s Super Duty lineup represents the ultimate in heavy-duty pickups. The Super Duty trucks have the latest and greatest tech available, including automated emergency braking and useful towing assists. Their serene cabins can be outfitted for a king or stripped down for a contractor. The leader of this ultra-competitive class is decided by what can tow the most, hold the most, and be noticed the most. That’s the Super Duty until further notice.

What's New for 2018?

The Super Duty carries over mostly unchanged for 2018. The biggest difference is the new Limited trim, which can be optioned to approach $100,000. This top-of-the-line model is loaded with standard features, including a premium interior with leather seats, real wood trim, and special badging. Its distinguished exterior has a specially designed grille, satin-finish tailgate trim, and unique badging.

Pricing

  • XLT: $38,805

  • Platinum: $64,610

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Super Duty boasts 450 hp and and an incredible 925 lb-ft of torque from its available turbodiesel engine. Together with a stout six-speed automatic transmission, it can tow up to a class-leading 32,500 pounds. The standard powerplant for most models is a 385-hp 6.2-liter V-8 that produces a best-in-class 430 lb-ft of torque. F-250s without the diesel funnel power through the latest TorqShift-G six-speed automatic transmission. The F-250 is the most comfortable (relatively speaking) daily driver of the Super Duty lineup due to its less firm suspension. Even so, the F-350 and F-450 have surprisingly athletic handling and control for their size. But the harshest roads will elicit shudders from all of these pickups. While the adaptive steering is an improvement, the disconnected feeling at highway speeds remains unsettling.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

All Super Duty pickups have a handsome dash design and a practical layout, while top-tier trims reach heights of luxury previously reserved for upscale sedans. Ford’s premier trim features such amenities as two-tone leather seats, a microsuede headliner, and ash-wood trim. Even stripped-down Super Duty interiors are ergonomically sound environments with straightforward controls and quality materials. The Lariat trim features leather seats, power-adjustable equipment, and upgraded tech. Ante up for the premium King Ranch and Platinum to unlock features no rival can match, such as massaging seats. Ford Super Duty pickups have more confined dimensions up front than heavy-duty competitors from Chevrolet, but they have the largest cargo beds in the land.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Super Duty’s optional Sync 3 infotainment system is user-friendly and packed with a wealth of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ford installs its 8.0-inch touchscreen Sync 3 unit in every model from the Lariat up; it’s optional in the base XL and XLT. A customizable 8.0-inch gauge display on the Lariat and higher trim levels provides digital gauges that monitor everything from diesel-emission fluid levels to trailer-tire pressures.
