  • Highs Useful cargo space and towing capability, good handling, peppy optional engine.
  • Lows Child-size third row, standard engine trails rivals in acceleration, bumpy ride over rough surfaces.
  • Verdict The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe has decent carrying and towing ability, a comfortable interior, and the latest tech features, although it's let down by a cramped third-row seat.

Overview

The Chevrolet Tahoe SUV is essentially an enclosed pickup truck with three rows, bolstered by the useful space and towing capability inherent in such a design. There are two V-8 powertrains available with rear- or all-wheel drive, plus a sporty special edition featuring a robust 420-hp V-8 and a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The Tahoe also brings excellent infotainment integration and a serene cabin. However, its truck roots cramp its third-row space and are immediately apparent on patchwork pavement. Still, don’t confuse it for a lifted minivan. The Tahoe is a proper truck underneath.

What's New for 2018?

For the first time, the Tahoe is available with GM’s 6.2-liter V-8 and new 10-speed automatic transmission as part of the all-new Rally Sport Truck (RST) performance package on the top-tier Premier trim. For the mid-level LT, the RST edition retains the standard 5.3-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic but adds sporty cosmetics such as blacked-out badging and 22-inch wheels. An optional brake package adds six-piston Brembo front calipers and larger rotors. The Tahoe’s base LS trim gets a Custom Edition, which adds features and deletes the third-row seat. Other updates include Satin Steel Metallic paint and a fill-up alert on the standard tire-pressure monitor.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Chevrolet Tahoe buyers have the choice of two V-8 engines, one of which is a potent 420-hp 6.2-liter powerplant mated to an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission that was developed jointly with Ford. This combo took the Tahoe RST from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, which is an impressive 1.5 seconds quicker than the standard 5.3-liter V-8. While Chevy’s 5.3-liter is an amicable engine, it takes its time getting off the line and lacks the low-end response of most rivals. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available. The high-riding Tahoe has surprisingly light steering, which imparts a feeling of agility, and its relatively tight turning circle gives it good maneuverability. However, the Tahoe has a body-on-frame design, based on the Silverado pickup, which compromises the ride on rough roads. While the Tahoe tackles smooth pavement just fine, driving on choppy surfaces can be unsettling. The top-tier Premier trim has standard Magnetic Ride Control dampers that provide a degree of extra composure.

Fuel Economy

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Tahoe has a quiet, comfortable cabin that can be fitted with features galore, with build quality and materials that are satisfactory for the price. Too bad it has a tight third row that isn’t suitable for adults. Those hoping to haul more than six people will want to consider the longer Chevy Suburban, the extended GMC Yukon XL, or almost any other SUV in this class. The Tahoe treats passengers to cozy seats, with available front buckets and second-row captain’s chairs that replace the standard benches. While the second and third rows fold flat manually, power-release and power-folding functions are available. The list of standard features includes tri-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power-adjustable front seats. Optional items include leather seating, a head-up display, a wireless charging pad, and a rear-seat entertainment system. The Tahoe has impressive interior storage space, and its cargo-carrying ability compares favorably with similarly sized rivals.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Tahoe has the full-featured MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. Not only does it include a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, it also has attractive menus and responsive feedback. Along with the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, every model has five USB ports and five 12-volt outlets distributed throughout the cabin. Also included are a three-month trial for SiriusXM satellite radio, an OnStar plan for emergencies, and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot. For additional cost, the Tahoe can be equipped with navigation, a 110-volt outlet, a Bose premium stereo, two extra USB ports, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
